  1. It's certainly not the Amish. Says you. English! Well put, Paradise Z.I.P. Probbably most readers on ZN do not know that the term "English" is what the Amish call the rest of us. As for the Amish, this Catholic boy is thinking declaring himself Amish to get out of the insane Obamacare non-heathcare system. That's all well and good, but let's see how fast that horse and buggy get you to the hospital when there is an emergency. Pretty sure God will heal them. I thought that was Pentecostals.
  2. Not sure if Akron would be allowed to do this. I asked this question some months ago and was told that it is not allowed. Lest, many, many schools padded their roster in this manner. But the soccer program giving academic scholly's (as has been sort of confimed on that board) to loosen up athletic bids is OK? I don't get it!
  3. There is no way of knowing if this player is actually a player. Notice the poster did NOT mention Steve Zakuani, so he might not be familiar with Akron -- and so vice versa. Let me assure you, if this kid is Akron material, Oliver Slawson and Caleb will do all they need to provide him am opportunity. Otherwise, I would wish him good luck at Fort Lewis State, a really nice program and location to attend college. But he DID mention Zakuani in post #7 and #8. Thanks for pointing that out Zach. I read Mike's original post, and then scanned the rest of the thread. I probably missed it -- but I may have looked at it before those were posted, not sure. I'll edit my own post there.

  5. On ESPN Classic -- right now. It's the 4th quarter already, and Memphis leads 20-10. Watch the other Deangelo Williams!
  6. Today, Ben Zemanski was brought on by coach Martin Vasquez for his first MLS action for Chivas USA. Came in early in the second half for the Goats. He and Blair Gavin hooked up on a shot attempt, played just over the bar by Blair. And that was about as close as the Goats look to come to scoring on this afternoon, as the Dynamo is controlling play totally in South Texas. 3-0 nearing the final whistle. Blair BTW is looking better every geme -- this is the third time I've seen him play, and he's looked better each game. Now for his team...Yuck!
  7. Maybe. A little too early to really know. The problem real conservatives have is they are being pushed aside by the the noise maching that is Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Palin, the lunatics on the religious right who believe the Earth was created 6,000 year ago and that crazy woman from Minnesota. Sane people like Ron Paul are beginning to be heard because people pay attention, but they can easily be painted with a broad brush by the media and discounted as something the are not when they will ultimately have to associate with the noise machine. FOX News, which is actually a liberal network because of their embracing of neo-conservatives, has duped many in this country to believe their brand of conservatism is the only one out there. They are a bunch of stupid people, who happen to look nice, for the most part, playing the ratings games and a lot of people can't see through that because the "conservative" option is FOX News and the "liberal" option is MSNBC. It's moronic and childish. Ron Paul holds adult ideas and is a smart guy...there is no room for him on FOX News. As much as I like Ron Paul, he has to much of a public record to run for office. People who get elected today are lightweights like Obama and GW Bush who had little in the way of accomplishments prior to being President. Compassionate Conservatism, what the Hell is that? The Audacity of Hope, what the Hell is that? It's nothing. Great one, I think your thinking is misunderestimated because you are often counterintuitive! And so is Ron Paul. Paul is an "anti-politician". He speaks his own mind too much to be taken seriously by any "serious" (i.e., American "mainstream", or establishment) party. This is why Paul receives support not just from the political Right, but from populists across the spectrum, not unlike Ralph Nader, or even (at times, though not much recently) Patrick Buchanan. Another anti-pol politician who gets support from Left and Right in his home state is Vermont Independent Senator Bernie Sanders. People support leaders who aren't afraid to speak (and vote) their mind. Sanders started his career as Mayor of Burlington, a city with a heavy student and Lefty population, and to appeal to that crowd, he called himself a (small 's') socialist and formed the Vermont Progressive Coalition to get elected Mayor for 3-4 terms. When he ran for Congress first in 1988, a (moderate) Republican was elected, showing the Dems that if they run their own candidate, they only split their own vote, but joining in a broad-based coalition gains votes and wins elections -- and Sanders has voted with the Dem Caucus since going to Washington. But, my point is, he claims conservative and Republican votes (at least 10%) because of his frankness. I would not hesitiate to say that Bernie and Ron have a lot more in common with each other, than they have with the establishment pols of the Dem or GOP parties. Check out Paul's recent comments at the Southern Tea Party convention -- or whatever they called it. http://rawstory.com/rs/2010/0410/ron-paul-...es-like-empire/
  8. You think Kest would be willing to coach the men's team too? haha jk sorry KD I think the attitude of the department is reflected in being able to retain coaches like Kest and Porter when the "big guys come calling"? This is awesome news, good luck Coach Kest, keep up the good work! Yeah, I'm tired of Akron being a "stepping stone", but until we get out of the MAC that's all we'll be. The only think that will keep some of these coaches is $$$. Then I encourage you to get used to Akron being a stepping stone (except in futbol), because Akron and the Mid American Conference is a marriage that will last longer than Larry King (all by himself). I thank Coach Jodi for her service. She has done a yeowoman's job! But, I think it's pretty clear that her ambition lies well beyond Akron. If she's still in Akron at the end of her new contract, it will not be a good sign for Akron WBB.
  9. I can't help noticing in all the recent buildings on campus the increasing degree of glass. How does this square with energy efficiency? Are any of the new buildings LEED certified?
  10. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the requirement to red shirt a year is exempted when you switch sports. Anyone?
  11. did they sign him or is he going to be a walk on. seems very small for that position, and his speed isnt very good either. His 40, broad jump, short shuttle, and 3 cone are all awful. And he has no size whatsoever. Reminds me of a great movie quote... "You're 5 foot nothin', 100 and nothin', and you have barely a speck of athletic ability. And you hung in there with the best college football players in the land for 2 years. And you're gonna walk outta here with a degree from the University of Notre Dame. In this life, you don't have to prove nothin' to nobody but yourself. And after what you've gone through, if you haven't done that by now, it ain't gonna never happen. Now go on back." Let's hope this guy is just a natural football player who had some bad combines. Or let's hope he busts his balls and provides a great look on the scout team for the next 5 years. That looks to be his role. I bet he has a great personality. I look forward to the positive effects on the team his young-man-snarl will bring. GO ZIPS! Is he still eligible following his photo shoot for Under Armour? Or is this signalling a new team gear contract?
  12. So far, only Indiana and UCLA have officially announced their skeds. And we ain't on either of those. No games in the West this year, at least until the post-season. Hint: College Cup in SoCal.
  13. Read the article about the MLS move to increase roster sizes. I'm not sure how the ability of clubs to sign their ex-academy players will effect the MLS draft, but I know there are five former Columbus Crew Academy players wearing the Blue and Gold. Sarkodie, Barson, Speas, Schmitt...I forget the fifth, but they all are future professionals. With this rule change, might we see most or all of them wearing those ugly yellow unies in Columbus? http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id...mls&cc=5901
  14. Can we get a translation service on this board??
  15. Not many of you will know his name, and most of those who do know little about him. Mike Harkins was the university's all-time leading scorer until, I believe, Len Paul broke his record in the early 70s. Though I never met the man, I grew up hearing stories of his heroics at Memorial Hall. Harkins was an all-around player, who could score, or make his teammates look good with his own playmaking skills. Harkins went on to become one of the most respected small college coaches at Eastern Montana University, and was an assistant coach to Bob Knight on the US Olympic team in 1976 in Montreal. He wrote a book on the game of basketball that was one of the most-read books in coaching. He was a real legend, who I understand on more than one occasion was considered for the head job at UA. When I first moved to Hawaii, I met the commissioner of the league that the Div II schools here played in, and learned that he had been Athletic Director at EMU during Mike's coaching days there. We had some long conversations about his old friend. I believe Mike Harkins was the best coach the University of Akron ever produced, even without most Akron fans knowing him. And he had friends from coast-to-coast. Mike Harkins died in Billings last month at 81. Beacon Journal story: http://www.ohio.com/sports/zips/89468682.html
  16. Another matchup of ex-Zips at Home Depot -- the stadium, not the hardware store -- on tap for Saturday as 0-2 CD Chivas USA and rookie holding midfielder Blair Gavin take on the upstart (2-0) New York Red Bulls with winger Sinisa Uviparipovich. Game broadcast is on Fox Prime Ticket where I'm at. Start time is 4 pm EST. That's 10 in the morning ovah heah. As the article says, NY has never won at CDCUSA. http://www.cdchivasusa.com/news/2010/04/ra...hern-california
  17. It's certainly not the Amish. Says you. English!
  18. Well, I have to go with this authoritative source, but I was thinking it was the first game following the Pioneer Bowl loss to Montana State -- that was my freshman year. I guess I was thinking about that defeat at the hands of mighty Truman State. And I would have bet the loss was more than 3 TDs. That's what all the inhalin' from the 70's did to Z.I.P.'s brain cells. BTW -- I was at the Indiana State game -- I coulda swore it ended in a tie! Maybe it's a good thing I left before the extra point.
  19. I'm with you on the above ZMan. If I could make one request, I'd ask KD to hire Brad Stevens as Offensive Coordinator. Our defense isn't that far behind -- sometimes equal to Butler, but we have a long way to go offensively. I'm looking forward to next December, when the Bulldogs come to the Isles. Not to Keith: There's one spot left in the event! http://www.diamondheadclassic.com/
  20. For those who saw the game, you know that Steve-o was not the only ex-Zip who excelled. In fact, with the exception of the goal scorer Kandji, the MVP for the Red Bulls was ex-Akron midfielder Sinisa Uviparipovich (Maury's nephew I think). Sinisa did a great job from the same Left Wing position as Zakuani for New York, holding court in Seattle's offensive half for much of the first stanza -- maintaining ball control and executing many offensive runs as playmaker for RBNY. Sinisa has taken over from former all-star Dave VanDen Bergh who was traded early last season to Dallas as the ARBee's point forward. His centering passes and right-footed corner kicks were beautiful, as New York kept Seattle's defensive feet full for the first 45. Both Zakuani and Uviparipovich were subbed early in the second half, but were the stars of this game for their teams. As far as attendance in Seattle, the game was played in a sub-50 degree drizzle, perfect London or Seattle football weather. The Sounders have sold out every game they've played -- forcing management to increase seating from 23k to 31k now to 36k. I think the announcer said they have 32 thousand season ticket holders. The Mariners can't beat that #. I think I saw, when I looked last year, that season tix are available at <$20/game. Damn cheap for a pro sports franchise.
  21. Thanks. Looks like Blair beat Landon to ball. Some Superclassico! http://www.mlssoccer.com/content/recap-bud...over-chivas-usa Chivas USA has gone from a title contender to a team struggling to make the playoffs. Won't take long before sniping will start along line of, "We got rid of Preki, and end up with this?" It ain't easy being a goat! Also, Ben Zemanski. Fighting with his former and current teammate for playing time. http://www.cdchivasusa.com/news/2010/03/ro...emanski-settles
  22. Ohio guard says, "I do declare". The guy put together a great run, but I don't see him being a first round pick. What'cha think? http://thepost.ohiou.edu/Main.asp?SectionI...ArticleID=31103
  23. If this is still up here on April 2nd, I'll believe it. Well, maybe not.
  24. From what I have heard from an inside source, interesting is an understatement... Care to elaborate? They told me to keep it private...someone heard from the inside and told me to keep it quiet. There are 3 players that confirmed last tuesday to Dambrot that they are transferring. There is also one player who is debating to stay on the team or to transfer. I'll let you guys guess who since I don't want to be the spoiler It's not too surprising. The team was too deep for its own good. Too many players of similar talent level. Somebody had to end up on the outside looking in. And then you have the players who were lucky enough to actually get playing time but still aren't happy, how would it feel if you were benched all year but the people who got to play were mouthing off and couldn't be content. It's just a bad combination. I find one thing pretty interesting: When players from the men's basketball team seek their option to transfer to another university, where they would have a better chance of playing, they are generally thanked for considering the overall welfare of the team, and basically wished well at their destination. BUT, when women's basketball players do the same thing, they are considered troublemakers, and told "good riddance, we never needed your type to begin with." Now is this just a difference between a successful program and one which has had less than a handlfull of winning seasons, or is it a more basic display of sexism? Just wondering in HI. BTW -- Did you see Keyla Snowden help her Kentucky Wildcats into the Elite Eight with 13 first half points, and all around hard-nosed play in upsetting one-loss Nebraska? You go girl!
  25. Now that is one poorly constructed sentence. The 'Meister is gonna have a stroke! Lol This was either a simple typographical error that could have happened to anyone or perhaps a small mistake in translating zippyman's post from ancient Mayan to English. In ancient Mayan there was only a one letter difference between "be able" and "people." I don't understand why some of you be able are so judgmental. I'd say Zippyman better watch out. You know what's going to happen to the Mayans in 2012! I guess that means all Mayan speakers, meister.
