  1. Not to throw a wet towel on a significant win, but Michigan is the B-11's bottom dweller in most seasons. Back in the old days of Lisa Fitch and similar coaches, UA always played UM tight -- in fact, I thought sure Lisa beat them once. Niagara -- now that's the one team Akron has always seemed to have the measure of, even in those 1-3 win seasons. I wish the team well, despite my concerns about the coach's style of "leadership". Go Wahine Zips!
  2. Mixed feelings, as RSL is 'my team', but this result is proof that parity lives in MLS. Red Bulls were last team to earn a playoff spot and now are Western Conference Champs (YES -- Western Conference!). Now they get to head further West to Home Depot Center to face the Columbus Crew in MLS Cup 08 next Sunday on ABC. Columbus is what you call a 'prohibitive favorite', with their Supporters' Shield title for the best regular season record. But New York is showing that old cliche "anything can happen" isn't just an old cliche.Ubi, BTW has been playing fairly regularly of late, and started the game vs RSL, but Osorio had to pull him at the 20-minute mark, as his hamstring, injured in the win @ Houston Dynamo a week earlier wouldn't allow him to perform at top flight in marking Salt Lake's crafty opposite Kyle Beckerman. Rojas' defense played a big part in NY shutting down RSL and extending their team record to 10-games undefeated vs the Utah bunch. Not sure who to root for -- other than Ubi. Crew is Akron's local MLS team for good it appears, and several UA players are products of their youth academy. On the other hand, their from Cow-you-know-where. Well, maybe they're the one good team from that town.
  3. You bring up the most widely reported reason for soccer-hating. What I like to say to the person (usually reporter) who makes that statement is this -- especially if the person is a baseball fan: "I suppose then that the worst possible thing for you is if you went to a baseball game, and there was a, uh, no-hitter?"
  4. Creighton will likely be ranked #2 in the nation when the NSCAA poll comes out (tomorrow?). yes -- Akron got screwed, but Holy Crap, the Big11/East/ACCk chew) will never have to earn respect from hte selection committee. Which by the way, probably is dominated by members of those conferences. I didn't look at where teams like SMU, UCLA, UCSB, Cal-Berkeley are in the pecking order, but the only team to defeat the Zips this year, New Mexico was on the bubble, and missed out making the field, despite winning eight of their last ten games. I have to look again, but if we win the first two, where might we have to go to make the Cup/final-four? Is it @ Maryland? That might be a fine little grudge match. FEAR THE ROO!!! (I don't have to worry about Waddell stealing that motto again, since he already did it once.)
  5. I am STILL waiting for my royalties to come in from that damn phrase! Do you have my proper address, UA?Zip in Paradise
  6. Linkie...stinkie.
  7. Thanks for the news! Can HW or UB score on our back-line? We'll see. I see NW defeated PSU and IU beat OSU in Big-11 playoffs. Was that the semis?
  8. JD has recruited more d lineman lately. The time for the 3-3-5 should be over by next year.Someone check the date, cause I've been hearing that one at least three years now!
  9. I have to disagree -- rather strongly. First I see Utah losing, most likely to BYU in the Beehive Bowl. Boise likely goes to the (BCS) house again. But if I'm not mistaken, any non-BCS team that finishes in the top-12 ...or yada, yada, yada... is entitled to a BCS bowl spot. Someone who actually follows American football, please fill in all the yada yadas.
  10. oh come on, you have got to be kidding me... Someone seriously wrote that? I think their projection of 70k in attendance each week was off by a zero That was so funny, I busted a gut! Then I wrote to the editor, and he wrote back: "Hello Akron. Visit me next time you're in Zagreb."
  11. Thanks to everyone back in the Zip State for these offerings to we out-of-staters. Your descriptions are great and make me want to do my own Lambeau Leap. Catch me 72Roo! I suspect this is the best challenge the lads have had since their loooooong weekend in New Mexico some nearly two months ago, and to be up to it shows the team has learned and grown from that experience. I would like to be able to say it is now possible the Zips win streak will continue till the College Cup, and Bring on the Deacons, and stuff like that. But I know the guys will be taking it one game at a time. That's the way to do it. Go ZipsI would say if they even played football! So, why don't we have one of those for the Bucknuts???
  12. No one can legitimately say now that we're getting shafted.But...there's still time.
  13. NIU had the ball for 16 consecutive minutes late in 2nd quarter and for first 9-10 mins of third. Huskies took the 10-6 lead, but BUGS just ran down the field to take the lead back in just a couple mins. 1 min to play 3rd qtr. BG 13 NIU 10.
  14. Damn! What ever happened to Far Side anyhow? That was sooooo gud.
  15. man if i would have known that i would have been there booing him myself. Two questions: First off: GZ -- or anyone. Is this Foote guy the same guy who played baseball (catcher) at K-ent and for the Montreal Expos? I'm thinking his name was "Jim". I remember him as the student P.E. teacher at Green JHS about 1972, making us run wind sprints in the gym immediately after lunch. Mine didn't last long!More importantly: Do you see KD running much more backcourt pressure than he has in any year previous? And will that be a necessity to be competitive, given the lack of frontcourt prowess? It sounds like there will be a lot of teams in the MAC similar to us -- excellent backcourts, but as usual, not a team with a post player that could elevate them near the top-25. That will change in exactly one year.
  16. I have 'The Sunday Capital' from Annapolis, October 24, 1999 hanging in my cube.AKRON SHOCKS NAVYMids give up 23-point lead, lose gameI listened to the Navy radio broadcast of the game here in Hawaii. At halftime they interviewed Jolly Roger Staubach, who said something along the line of, "Looks like we have this game pretty much sewn up". Yup! Thanks Cowboy.
  17. Good grief! What an awful display of football. (and I'm one of the few who admits preferring MAC football to BCS ball). I watched live the 2nd and 3rd quarters (watching the replay now), and when I left I said to myself, "the only way Temple can win this game is if OU gives it away". Was I ever prophetic. Before this season, I penciled in the final two games, @OU and @Temple as likely defeats for Akron, but having seen Army twice and Eastern Michigan once, I feel both of those teams are a step ahead of either of the two I watched tonight. In fact, Temple tonight looked to be the worst D-1 team I've seen in recent years (first 8 drives - 60 yards & 0 pts). That QB was terrible. As the announcer said, Golden should have found someone else behind center. IOW -- I'm penciling in two Akron victories to finish the season -- over two teams outside the top 110. Akron could win 8 games and still not be in the top 90 in the country. On a positive note, I liked the Pink Out theme. More schools should do that. Pink Zippy?!
  18. I saw another pre-season magazine yesterday -- Street and Smith's I think -- and they placed Akron second in the MAC East, behind #1 Miami. And guess what. They put our friends from Portage County fourth. I like that one!! And you know it's because
  19. If this is indeed true, it's a bummer. Not that we'll be bereft of talent if he goes pro, but having a proven finisher up front is invaluable and while there is a wealth of new talent arriving next year, I don't know that any of them are strikers. Steve's brother Gabriel is a professional footballer in England (a defender) owned by Fulham who played on a loan spell for a year and a half with Stoke City (in the English Championship at the time, newly promoted to the EPL this year) and currently playing with League One side Peterborough United. Anyway, how 'bout one more year Steve? Not sure how much street cred GoZips has with the futbol playahs. He told me already that Evan Bush was going pro after this year, and I believed him without checking the program. Good one! IF Steve leaves, and goes back to the UK, he will have to start at the same level that his brother plays at, League One -- the third level of English football. If he stays in the states for another two years, he could be equivalent to a lottery pick in MLS, IMHO. COULD be -- hard to tell, but one more important thing: Get an education young man! That's the closest thing to a "sure thing" you can do in life. And I'd love to be able to watch him for the next 15 years as MLS builds itself at least to League Championship level.Let's go Nottingham Forest!
  20. From an old-timer take it from me, that this is not exactly a "new idea". Governor Rhodes (for current students, he's the guy our gymnasium is named after) promised Cleveland sportscaster Gib Shanley about 35 years ago that Cleveland State would have a football team -- and I think that it would be in the Big Ten. How many votes did that garner?
  21. The gametracker showed him making the "tackle" on the blocked FG. You got me.
  22. My guess is that he is of Korean ancestry, and it is pronounced "Sook". Now excuse me, but I have to go to dinner. I have reservations at Fuk Yuen's Seafood Restaurant. Zip in ParadiseHonolulu, HI
  23. I take back everything I said last week about JD. This is a humiliating result!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OK -- I take back what I just wrote. Nice Win coach. Now can anyone tell me what the ____ just happened???My ESPN gametracker showed DK with a 91 yard rush after the blocked FG. I guess that was a typo.
