  1. Can I have your recipe for deer cabosi? I need something unique to go with my 3-day old poi at the Hawaii-Utah State game. Would you serve that with a syrah, or valpolicella?
  2. I will never apologize for saying this: What's good for the MAC is good for Akron. Go Fl-ashes -- beat the A&M Blue Bloods!
  3. We are talking about a Dave Wanstead coached team. An anoymous NFL coach was once quoted as saying, "Dave Wanstead will turn Pitt into Temple within five years." Looks like it may be true.We just need to keep taking care of business in the MAC, the MAC East especially and everything will be fine. Can't is a 6-6 team. It may make them special for the Can't, but not for college football.GP1,An anonymous Miami Dolphin DE told me virtually the same thing, so don't think you have any kind of scoop here.
  4. Tune your telly sets to Fox Soccer Channel Zips soccer afficianados.Who's the best player on the field -- both offensively and defensively -- in the A-League semifinal between the Portland Timbers and Atlanta Silverbacks? Its Portland's fullback Cameron Knowles, the University of Akron all-American. He's had two shots on goal the first 30 minutes -- both excellent scoring opportunities. The second, a bicycle from just inside the 6-yd box had to be headed over the bar by a defender. The overall playoff series score between the teams is apparently all-even, though you wouldn't know it from the FSC announcers, who are largely useless.Cameron was voted to the A-League first team all-stars, after being second on the Timbers in scoring with 7 Goals, 4 assists this season from the left back position. His leadership for the league semifinalists (Portland has 7 shots so far in the second game to nil for Atlanta) gives Cameron a really good chance to move back to Major league Soccer next year, and this time on the varsity rather than a reserve squad. Here's hoping he stays on the West Coast - hopefully the new San Jose franchise -- where the Zips in Paradise can most easily cheer on their Kiwi star.Wouldn't it be great if he could make his way to the inevitable MLS NEO Stars Soccer Club in Macedonia? Go Zips!!!!
  5. Pardon my laughing -- it's only funny to me -- BUT, that joint may be the only place left on campus that was there when I was a freshman. And it's pretty amazing, considering that my neighbor caught Hep-A there about 1979 and sued them successfully for quite a bit of dinero. At that time, there clientele was made up mostly of homeless and grad students -- though you have to understand the large intersection of those two populations. But, here's another question you might ask, if you're looking for a larger solution: What type of drug treatment facilities are there in the community? When a friend of mine was concerned with the drug problems in East Palo Alto CA, just around the corner from the Stanford U campus, where she studied, she ended up starting the city's first drug and alcohol abuse treatment center. Maybe you should be talking with the school administration and the Plasma Center management for the best accomodation. As I learnt at Akron U, seek da win-win solution for all.BTW, did I mention, it's 1800 in the islands and
  6. I take that back, way, back. The jockeyes lost to the Bruins on Friday 3-1. Play today (Sun) vs CSU-Fullerton. This is the tournament I hope UA will play in in another couple years -- doesn't look like any Left Coast road trips next year. You listening out there, LA Zip?
  7. While all that is a given (except that they played Kentucky nearly even, except on the scoreboard and that AWFUL Iowa State team just beat Iowa), at this point K-ent is playing the best football in the MAC. On the other hand...If we get back the Wagon Wheel (as I expect to), Zips get the target on their back, and become the faves in the East. Jus'do it Akron! Wish I could be there.
  8. I was wondering -- and since I'm reading this thread, it's quicker to ask than look up boxscores -- Is Mike Nanchoff getting any playing time yet this year? I just got home from watching his sister play for Duquesne vs Hawaii, and was wondering. Ahhhhh, what memories, Georgie and Louie and Friday evenings eating paprikash at the Hungarian-American Club! But I digress.BTW-- I think I just saw a score on ESPNU -- that tOSU beat UCLA in LA??? Next Wednesday will be VERY big after the season -- if we don't win the MACC -- and for seeding regardless. PLEASE bring ALL your friends, loved ones and coaches from Southern Ohio to watch this battle for Ohio futbal supremacy. Hell -- bring Bob Dowdy back!
  9. Do we get to hear their melodious voices singing "Zip Go the Zippers"? If not, it may not be worth the price of the vinyl. It IS on vinyl, isn't it?
  10. And -- according to the article, Blair got the Red in the third minute. Uh, 40 minutes? What happened to the other 47 minutes?
  11. Okay, I'm not philosophically opposed to playing YSU. But the idea that we would play them in the very first year of the new stadium sounds like we are having trouble getting bigger name opponents. I don't see any reason why we should have to play a "1-AA" opponent in the first year, so it sounds like bad news to me.
  12. Hoosiers are a good team, that could pull a surprise on a number of Big-11 ballclubs. I was expecting a number around three touchdown personally! I can't see Akron beating the spread a third week in a row. I think 15-17 is a realistic number.
  13. Aha! J. Pierpont Morgan, you have said a mouthful. The Breveland Clowns need to clean house -- from the top down. I would love to see Charlie Frye in a Miami Dolphin or Atlanta Falcon uniform. Too bad his career was set back on draft day in '05.
  14. 29?? My paper says 33!
  15. Anybody can publish a poll, but the only one that matters is the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. It should come out on Tue. Look for it at NSCAA.com.BTW, did you see how Maryland took apart Notre Dame over the weekend? Wow, the ACC is awfully good -- but so are the unranked Akron Zips. So good I expect them to be top-15 in the debut poll.Sorry to the Goal Patrol for missing the show over the weekend. I had Computer Meltdown Syndrome. But UA melted down David Gualdarrama and the Loblows. Go Get'em!
  16. Aaahhhhh! That's all we need -- another Michael Vick joke!
  17. Hallalujah! Goal Patrol? Oh, yeah! Now we're talkin' futbol. For the members of the GP Crew, I will provide your opening night instructions for the New Mexico game in a follow-up addendum on the soccer board. Bring your leis and pineapples, it's Gualdarrama night in Akron!
  18. I've heard this from self-described CFB "experts" Oooooh, too many times! Army is not a very good team, but to say they're worse than Fla Int, Utah St., Idaho, or half the Sun Belt is absolutely ridiculous. In fact, I'd say Army is better than half the MAC -- that's why Akron canNOT afford to take a break against the Knights.
  19. we got Beckham? Steve Zakuani! Remember that name -- though I expect it to be repeated quite often by public address announcers over the coming years.
  20. The camp you speak of would probably be the US Youth Soccer Residency Program in Bradenton, where two of our recruits were resident last year -- along with gaining U-17 international experience. It may be better that he was left off the roster for Korea -- as the team has gotten crushed by Tunisia and Berzerkistan its first two matches. Yes -- Berzerkistan -- as in Doonesbury.
  21. Can you say "libero"? Typing this while watching Hawai'i vs Michigan on live TV before about 7000 in town tonight. Could you imagine that number watching all UA's games this year?As for the Zips VB squad, they had massive injuries last year and never recovered. But nonetheless, it should be "bubble time" for our coach. He hasn't been in the postseason in a looooong time, and never contended for a title. Never.
  22. I jusdongetit. If this kid runs a 4.13 -- or anything near it, he's wasting his time in football. He could be the next Carl Lewis for godsakes. (Didn't Bob Hayes run 4.17?)How many track offers does he have???
  23. I will be looking for the name "Sean Hakes" to pop up on the radar at a WAC or MWC school in a year or two. Orange Coast is a good place to prep for that level of program. If he has the skill we all thought, he could still be a starter at a mid-major. And when he does, we can all say, "Well, he wasn't good enuf for us!"
  24. I was surprised to find this kid was somehow left off the roster for the U.S. Under-17 World Cup team, which the US started on Monday in Korea. He had played on the team in a tournament in France in April, scoring a goal and providing two assists. Is he injured?Hopefully, he will be a Zip in '08. Any Akron futbol fans who can provide there review of his talents? He's a member of Everest SC in Akron.
  25. Soccer America named the top-10 teams in their Top-25 coaches poll in the new edition of the magazine out this week. Voila, it has the usual (can you say "Atlantic Coast", Boobie?) suspects, Virginia, North Carolina, Duke and Maryland congregated at the top, along with UCLA, SMU, St John's and defending champs UCSB. Interestingly, SMU is the only top-10 team remotely in the "Midwest". Nary a Big Tenner to be found. The rest of the top-20 will be on their website later, but like most everything there anymore, you'll have to pay to read it. I expect UA to make the top-20, maybe around #15, but that will be the poorest ranking they'll have all season. Look for a minimum 15 wins friends.
