Children look up to pro-athletes. I didn't know anything about professional soccer in my youth because it wasn't easy to access. The MLS is very easy to access and follow these days which could be the difference. Times have changed.
Edit: Barcelona and Real Madrid are very easy to access these days. Most of these youth soccer participants know who Messi and Ronaldo are. I had no idea who Pele was when I played soccer.
I'm a big MLS supporter and have watched every game highlight this year for every game. The MLS is doing very well this year.
I've started to pay attention to NASL and USL Pro matches and have noticed that both of those leagues are doing very well this year.
The article isn't trying to say soccer is going to takeover American sports, it's basically saying soccer is here to stay.
Dear American Soccer Haters: We Don't Need You Anymore (A Thank You Note)
An interesting article that's relevant to Akron as we've seen soccer's growth firsthand. What do you guys think? I coach a little league baseball team and have noticed that soccer participation in the Akron area greatly outnumbers baseball. Will these kids continue to support soccer?
Considering the recruits Akron gets every year, this could possibly be the reason and a selling point. I assume the MLS (or professional soccer somewhere else) is the ultimate goal for these players. Going to Akron is better than going to a top academy and helps them prepare for their last 2-3 years at another college.
It's unfortunate to lose some of these talented players but you have to remember that just about everyone on Akron's roster would start at 90% of the colleges in America. I wish them well.
Could you imagine an Akron JV team against other team's starters?
so ODU is not heading to CUSA, time for the MAC to make a move for both ODU and JMU. Those that think the drive is too long need to take a look at our softball and baseball schedules.
it looked like regular cornhole but it got me thinking about a way you could play soccer cornhole. If you take a small trampoline and put a hole in the middle, you could play something similar to cornhole?
Bigsoccer updated their site, here's the new link for easy access to the Akron thread http://www.bigsoccer.com/community/threads...thread.1929196/ I also edited it at the top of this thread as well.
Not sure what First Energy stadium seats, but I'd guess around 2,500. With standing room, we packed 5,200 in there but I don't think the NCAA would be interested in that.
I would really appreciate it if someone could find Akron's actual attendance numbers. I remember having an argument with a few people on here last year about soccer outdrawing the football team in attendance. There were football games that had less than 1,000 people in 2011 so I have a feeling I was right.
The non-revenue MAC sports already travel all over the nation, I can't imagine the travel costs incurred from adding ODU and JMU would be a problem. Don't understand how anyone could be against this
ODU and JMU both have very good soccer and basketball programs.
I agree with dropping UMass as a MAC affiliate but that's sorta hypocritical of me because I like having WVU as a MAC affiliate as well.
