I agree with the opinion that if someone advertised themselves as having an Akron party, that they better be showing the Akron game on the main TV's. But aside from that, the bars are going to do what's better for business. If putting the OSU game on the main TV is what's better for business, that's what they should do...and that's what I'd do too. They are running a business...if there was really a demand to see Akron on TV, they'd put it on TV. Sounds like the Winking Lizard had the best plan....both games on big TVs. Akron just hasn't caught people's attention yet this year, especially the casual fan. They didn't even do it last year until they won the MAC Title game and made it to the Bowl game. It sucks, but it's the truth. I saw some people predicting a sold out Rubber Bowl for the first home game...and while I want to believe that will happen, it just won't in my opinion. They need to win next week and start a run to grab people's attention, and might have a chance of getting the city's attention once they realize it's a championship quality team. Again, if you want to start a revolution, go ahead...see how successful you are. See how many people aside from the diehard Akron fans here even notice Akron has a game when OSU battles Texas next week. See how many people listen to you when you consistenly badmouth OSU and their fans for no apparent reason. I understand your frustration...the local team - a very good team - is getting outshined by OSU. And while I disagree with your notion that people shouldnt cheer for OSU as a #2, I agree that there should be far more support for Akron, and the supreme loyalty should go to them. But that's not going to change by you starting a revolution...or by you bashing OSU and their fans without reason (that actually makes us look bad...)...it'll happen when the Zips have another great season this year...and again next year...and the following. It will happen when they prove to people that they are a high caliber program, and that last year wasn't a one time. thing. So be patient...go to the Winking Lizard...have respect for other fans...drink your $1 drafts...and cheer on the Zips. Because THEY are the only ones that can change anything.

Am I the only one that doesn't think he's dissing the Zips? He wrote about the positives. He wrote about the negatives (silly mistakes, etc). And he wrote that they had come a long way. Would anyone disagree with any of that?I don't see this as him bashing Akron one bit...instead, I see it as him noting the progress they have made.

Pound ND, but sorry, not OSU
-
Well here's my random thoughts...- Not too sure what I thought about the personal foul call on the first drive. To me, it didn't seem like enough...did anyone see anything else then two linemen getting into it a little bit?- The Zips played very stupid football in the first half. Some silly mistakes/penalities really cost them. The good news is some of it seemed to go away as the game progressed...can we rack that up to nerves? - Liked what I saw from J.D. A couple of really ballsy calls made by our coach today. And he kept teaching, even when it was obvious the game was lost. - I liked what I saw from Dennis Kennedy. Ran the ball pretty well and was a good receiver out of the backfield. - Bad weekend for the MAC...only a few games were even close.- How bad were those announcers today? - Was I the only one not overly impressed with Morelli? I mean, he made a few good throws...but most of the time he had all day to throw and wide open receivers. He made a few pretty bad throws, considering the protection he had. I mean, he looked good...but he didn't wow me by any means. - Bad day for OSU haters. Looked pretty damn good...and I heard they got the big TV too. - I'm very confident in this team moving forward. I'm thinking 9-3...and a win next week vs. NC State. - Can't sucks.
-
I actually forgot the Browns were even on tonight...so the question wasn't in a response to Charlie's performance. With that said...the O-line does suck and Carthon is pretty horrible...but doesn't Charlie have to take some blame as well?
-
Who will be the better pro...Frye or Getsy?Thoughts?
-
Minnesota 44, Can't State 0 F. Good MAC East pick Herbie!
-
I DO NOT want to play them. This game can really cost us. Oh, I agree that they'll be a very tough opponent. I'm just saying that for tonight...that coach has A LOT of explaining to do...wow
-
What the hell was Central Michigan thinking!?!??! What a choke...
-
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/preview06/ne...tory?id=2564578So Herby picks em to win the MAC East...but they are in ESPN's Bottom 10!?!??!

you don't understand the point, it's about being treated like second class in the city of Akron if you go to a bar to root for the Zips. I'm willing to bet you $20 that OSU will be on the speakers at Johnny Maloys on Saturday. And I wasn't refering to just academics, I was referring to the school all together. Academics, athletics, etc. You have been wrong in every post and say a bunch of crap because you don't want to admit to the fact that OSU hinders Akron's growth. Get off their nuts. Alright bobby. I'm just going to end this debate. Here's what every one of your posts contains:1) I just don't get it2) Something about the size of TV's3) Some gibberish4) Some comments about me wanting to go to OSU5) Some more gibberishSo have fun Saturday...I know we're both hoping for a Zips victory, so that's good. I just hope you get it on the big TV...otherwise I have a feeling I might see you on the 6 o clock news

Alright...lemme try to respond to this..."Did you see the article that says Akron has the biggest increase in incoming freshman, I'm sure OSU knows, they don't want to see another school besides themselves grow in Ohio. You know that."Ohio State's enrollment is about 57,800. Akron's enrollment is what, 22,000? For some reason I don't think they're too worried..."This whole time I've been talking about how both schools compete on a broader scale and all you've done is given me football stats."OK, this was your original statement..."WE can show these locals that AKron is a team people actually root for and maybe get that crap of a team osu off the big screen so those panzies have to watch AKron."To me, you are talking about football there. You randomly brought up academics once..."I started a post that addresses the issue we're faced with on Saturday, which you can't deny is true. The post was started as an idea of how we can overcome that issue by getting together and putting OSU on the small screen."So wait...is the issue adademics? Or football? Or who is on the bigger TV? Do you even know at this point? "It seemed like that idea bothered you. Would you rather see OSU on the big screen or something??"Nope...My buddy is having a bunch of people over to watch the Akron game. At some points, mostly during commercials, we'll probably flip to the OSU game. Your idea doesn't bother me at all. You can go and have your Big TV, Small TV revolution...I'm truly excited for you...I'm guessing CNN will probably be interviewed you about it by Halftime. And don't even let them picture and picture the other game! Then some people might enroll at OSU instead of Akron! Yeah, but like I said...it doesn't bother me. It will bother me, however, if my friend doesn't get enough snacks...that's always annoying. "Does that upset you if a bunch of Akron people get together to get the game on the big screen so that OSU fans have to watch it on a small screen??"Most of the OSU fans will watch it the game in person, or at a tailgate near the campus. Or they'll watch it at home...or at a friends...or at a bar. Unless your Big TV, Small TV revolution realllllly catches fire and gets to ALL of the bars. But even so, they might just stay anyways. Maybe they'll pull their chairs forward a little bit or something. "I'll bash OSU just like if you bash Michigan."Alrighty...sounds good. A few questions though...are we in competition with Michigan too? What size TV can their game be on? "On Saturday at 3:30, i hope the OSU game is on a side tv so that I can root for Northern Illinios."Go Northern Illinois (on the small TV!!!!!!!)"It's not jealousy, it's competition."You're obviously winning that competition too... "I'm trying to belittle OSU which a lot of people don't expect."So your don't think they respect us...and your way of getting them to respect us is by belittling them? Good plan..."It's time to open everyones eyes to the University of Akron. There is another school besides OSU to root for and that's what I want people to know."I think people already do know. I mean, we are going to be on the big TV!!!"You don't have to like OSU because you live in Ohio."Absolutely right. It's funny...I haven't heard a single person who likes OSU here try to tell anyone who they should or shouldn't like. Only OSU-haters like you are doing that. But hey...BIG TV, SMALL TV REVOLUTION BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Wow bobby. Ramble much? lol. How you brought academics between the two schools into the argument, I do not know. Nobody said a thing about academics. You don't do well with analogies...sooo alright, I'm going to try to respond to that as best that I can. Let's first compare Akron and OSU:NATIONAL TITLESOhio State: 6Akron: 0CONFERENCE TITLESOhio State: 29Akron: 1ALL-TIME RECORDOhio State: 765-298-53Akron: 461-436-36 BOWL WINSOhio State: 17Akron: 0RECORD THE PAST 5 SEASONSOhio State: 50-13Akron: 28-30Enough stats. Am I trying to bash Akron? Of course not. Akron is my school and my favorite college team. What I'm trying to point out is this...Akron isn't even close to being the established program that Ohio State is. They need to win more...win more conference titles...win some bowl games...get ranked. I wish it was different, but Akron simply is not in the same league as OSU at this point in time, and won't be for a long, long time. As for the competition between the schools, sure, they compete...technically. They might go after the same recruits, same media coverage, etc....but let's face reality. OSU is going to get those better recruits. OSU is going to get the media coverage. OSU is going to get whatever they want 99 times out of 100. Akron's job (along with the other mid-major schools) is to try to steal a top recruit here and there, find the best of the remaining prospects, and coach these players to maximize their potential. Again...I wish it was different, but that's the reality of the situation. You can start anti-OSU motions. You can bash their team. You can bash their fans. You can do whatever...all that's going to do is make you look silly and jealous. The teams simply aren't in the same league right now. Akron could go undefeated and wouldn't sniff the National Title game. They are just not that established yet. The good news? I believe they're on their way. Last year was a struggle at times, but they showed a lot of heart, especially towards the end of the year, and made what once seemed like a dismal season into a memorable one. Recruiting classes are getting better and better. We have a great coach who gets the most out of his players. The future is bright, and we should all be thrilled about that. So if you want to make it a competition with OSU, be my guest. If you think the programs are really that close, thats cool...that's your opinion. But instead of looking silly and uneducated by continually bashing OSU and their fans, why not just be proud of the team you have and enjoy their ride to higher places in college football.

"Your analogy doen't work because you wouldn't represent Akron in it. You don't get girls. You'd have to compare Grady with another baseball player for it to make just even a little since. Dumb analogy that wasn't well thought out."First of all, how do you know what girls I do or don't get? Because you disagree with me or don't like my analogy, I must automatically not get girls? What an idiotic statement. Trust me Dale...noooo problems in that department. As for the analogy...Dale, you just don't get it. Grady represents OSU - A person (or team) that seemingly "has it all"I represent Akron - A person (or team) who has had some great recent success, has a great future, but doesn't have it all just yet...maybe one day, but not right nowThe girls represent recruits - Most hot girls (or top recruits) are going to go to Grady (OSU). I (Akron) will still get some hot girls (again, recruits), but pretty much only the the ones that Grady (OSU) doesn't want. Understand now?

I've never said anything about disliking the OSU fans from Columbus. My issue is with the the fans that live in this area that would rather forget about the Zips and root for the Buckeyes. Please explain to me how OSU is not Akron's competition??? Maybe they aren't directly competitors in football, but as a college in general, they are. When high school students in this area are figuring out which college is the right choice for them, Akron and OSU are big competitors. Your blind if you don't think so. When the locals can't decide if they want to watch OSU play football on TV or take a trip to the Rubber Bowl, that's competition. Akron competes with OSU in many ways. Think of it from a business standpoint. But please, go ahead and explain to me how the University of Akron and the Ohio State University aren't competitors. Because you have yet to justify your claim while I've done this over and over again. Alright bobbyaxe...1) If you want to bash OSU, go for it. But at least come up with some material that makes you look like you know football. Seriously, by calling out their fans (some of the best in college football) and calling their team garbage (c'mon now) you just look jealous, bitter, and uneducated about football. 2) Good luck with your "Forget about the Buckeyes, Go Zips" campaign. I'm sure that one will really work...3. That's too bad that that ONE kid who was NINE was bashing Akron. I must ask...are you then saying he was in the wrong for bashing another school for no apparent reason? 4) I agree with you that getting more people out to the Rubber Bowl is important and needs to be done. I agree that more local excitement needs to be built. I agree that more pride needs to be taken with the Zips. I DISAGREE that the way to do that is by bashing the Buckeyes and their fans. 5) The competition thing...I've thought long and hard about how to explain this thing to you, because you obviously don't get it. So I'll try my best with another analogy. It's a bit out there, but here goes...Grady Sizemore and I go to a bar to pick up girls. Grady of course is very successful and is the most attractive guy in the bar. He also has the most resources for bringing girls in. Not every girl will want him over anyone else, but pretty much most of them will. I'm a pretty attractive guy who is just starting to have some real nice success. I don't have the resources that Grady does, but I do have some. Technically, because we are both trying to pick up girls, we are in competition. Realistically, any girl that Sizemore and I both want, he is going to get. Sure, there might be one who doesn't like Grady and goes with me, but pretty much - what Grady wants, Grady gets. So what can I do in this competition when talking to the girls?Focus on ME and the things I bring to the table. Focus on the success I've had and the success I'm headed towards. And what am I not going to do? Talk about him! The girls know what he has to offer. I'm not going to be able change that he's a rich, successful guy. So instead of badmouthing him to the girls and looking like a jealous wannabe, I'm not even going to bring him up. If someone asks, I'll say, "Oh yeah, him? Good guy...but let me tell you about me." Maybe the analogy is a bit out there, but if you really take the time to think about it, I think you'll get what I'm trying to say.

If that is truly the reasoning behind his rant, there are two faults with it...1) The way to earn respect from another school/team is to beat them, or at least play them well...and to do it with class. You do not earn respect from another team's fan base by calling them pansies or by saying their team is garbage (especially when they are #1 in the nation).2) Ohio State fans DO respect Akron fans. Let me tell you a story. I got to go down to Ohio State in 2001 to see them play Akron. I was lucky enough to watch the game with a press pass, wearing my blue and gold polo shirt in a sea of scarlet and gray. If you recall that game, the Zips stuck with the Buckeyes. In fact, had it not been for a few mental mistakes by the Zips players and some bad luck, Akron might've had a chance to pull off the upset. The final score was 28-14. I remember a lot from that game...how loud OSU stadium was, even through soundproof glass. How awesome the band is in person. How close and exciting the game was. How proud I was of the Zips performance. But the thing I remember most? The fans. After the game, many of the press members following the game commented to me that Akron should be proud with the way they played, and that they were impressed. It was definitely nice to hear. As I left the stadium with my 3 buddies who had purchased regular tickets (all wearing Akron gear), numerous Buckeye fans gave us a "good game" or a "you guys played well!"...or something along those lines. One lady in particular stopped my group and said, "You know, you guys have a great team...you really should have won today, and if it was against anyone else, I'd be cheering for you to do just that." All fans of OSU...all saying things they didn't have to say...all showing respect to Akron and the team. Sure, there are some idiot OSU fans out there. There are also some idiot Akron fans...and Penn State fans...and Can't State fans. Does that mean that every fan of that team is an idiot? (OK, maybe Can't). No. So again...please...stop trying to create a competition that is simply not there...and if it is truly about respect, ignore the idiot OSU fans and take a lesson from those who I ran into 5 years ago...to earn respect, you first must show respect.

I grew up about an hour away from Akron. I have always been a big sports fan and have always rooted for the hometown teams over anyone else - Indians, Browns, Cavaliers. As a youngster, I obviously didn't know what college I was going to attend. My Uncle - an OSU Alum - got me into college football by watching the Ohio State Buckeyes. I started following them when I was about 7, and have followed them ever since. When I got accepted to The University of Akron, I became a Zips fan. I have gone to just about every home Zips football and basketball game there has been in my time at Akron, as well as many road games. Whenever Akron plays Ohio State in anything, I cheer for Akron 100%. When Akron is not playing OSU, I cheer for OSU. How that makes me a frontrunner, I do not know. How that makes me an OSU-wannabe, I also do not know. For whatever reason, you don't like OSU. And that's fine...really, it is. Nobody's forcing you to cheer for them. But if a person grew up with no ties to Akron...and they followed OSU football because their family member went there...and they cheer for Akron over OSU when the two compete...what's the problem? Ohio State is a favorite of many Ohioans because they are in situations similar to my own. Why should I all the sudden cheer against OSU, a team I've followed for almost 20 years, because my school now plays them two or three times a decade? That's just silly. Look...it's time to face reality. Ohio State is a premier football program. Most years, they'll start and finish in the top 10-15. Most years, they have a legitimate shot at winning the National Title. They will - more often than not - get the best recruits in Ohio. They have the largest fan base in Ohio because so many people grew up with no ties to Akron or Can't State or Toledo or other smaller MAC schools. NONE OF THIS IS GOING TO CHANGE. I repeat...NONE OF THIS IS GOING TO CHANGE. So instead of bashing people who cheer for OSU as a #2...instead of bashing OSU as a team and looing silly by calling them garbage......and instead of waging some kind of war on OSU fans, why not focus on AKRON. Focus on the success the Zips had last year. Focus on the great possibilities that they have this upcoming season. Focus on the fans becoming a bigger and bigger part of the success.
-
Do you realize how silly you look with all of the anti-OSU crap? Dude...they aren't our rival...they aren't playing us...they have very little to do with us. Why even bring them up? You have a good idea in getting a bunch of UA fans together to watch the game somewhere. Isn't that enough? The bars are going to do what is best for their business. So if there are a lot of OSU fans that show up, they'll probably put it on that game. If there are a lot of Akron fans that show up, they'll probably put it on that game. Or...and I know this is a crazy thought...but some bars have - (drumroll please) - MULTIPLE TV's! So in review...1) Akron and OSU are not rivals and do not play each other this year. Quit pretending that there is some kind of competition or rivalry.2) Bar owners will put whatever game or games on TV that bring people in to drink their beer and eat their food. If the Akron Zips are really the team people want to watch that day in whatever bar you're in, that will be the game on the TV. 3) I love Akron and I'm very prideful in the Zips. With that said, I also know stupid comments when I see them. To call OSU a "crap team" when they are #1 in the nation and the favorite for the National Title is silly. To call their fans "pansies" is an even dumber statement. I'll just say this...you wouldn't need to come on an Internet message board at OSU to get 30 or more people to show up at a bar and watch the opener...they'd be there...and far more than 30. Our fans have gotten much, much better in the last year and a half, much of that due to the success of the AK-Rowdies. And I believe as the University and as athletics continue to take steps forward, the fan base will get better and better as well. But how about we try 1) Selling out the Rubber Bowl just once, 2) Coming in higher than 113th in average home attendance in D1 football - before we start calling out Buckeyes fans? Have you ever watched TV with a bunch of people...and a beautiful girl comes on the television...and a girl in the room starts ripping the girl on TV for silly reasons like her eyelashes or her nails because deep down, she envys that girl's beauty and success...and everyone else in the room that knows women knows that - like her or not - the girl on TV is a beautiful girl? Well, you get the point...I hope anyways. Bottom line: Quit worrying about OSU and focus on Akron having a great year...GO ZIPS!
-
Isn't every game for Can't a "landmine" game?
-
I'm really not trying to be a jerk here. But I'm not sure someone is going to be sitting there - see a bunch of UA students yelling and screaming and waving Akron flags - and think "Hey, I'm going to change my plans for the day and go to the game". I like the enthusiasm...I just dont think it'd have much of an effect at all.
-
If you're writing a column about MAC Football, concentrate on MAC Football. Totally going out of your way to rip on OSU and their fans just makes you look unprofessional and bitter. I've had the site bookmarked for awhile now...so I know you guys are better than that garbage. And really, you end up being quite the hypocrite. You rip on the fans of the Big Ten for NOT caring about the MAC games, claiming that they think the MAC isn't worthy of their time...but then rip on OSU for NOT selling these MAC game tickets, and for caring too much? Make up your mind!
-
Weren't some people predicting sellouts?
-
That must be a new thing, I never heard that in my three years in Columbus (campus area). Seriously? It's been around for awhile now...with a bunch of copycats. Let's not be one of them.
