External funds for Akron reach record high

Speaking of the Buchtelite...Did the one writer's article title - "Fear the flushes" rub anyone else the wrong way? -
Actually a lot of us thought it'd be a good game and were worried about this one. Oh, and glad to see you don't just come and post when Can't actually does something well
-
I just figured I'd open this up for you KeeprOFtheHous...that way the next thought you get, instead of posting ANOTHER separate thread, you can just put it here

1) Does Akron stand a realistic chance of winning the MAC East anymore? 2) Does Akron have a realistic shot at a bowl game anymore? 3) What does this do to the fan base for the rest of the season? 4) Is Can't now the odds-on favorite to win the East?5) (New) Final predictions on the Zips finish this year?

Do you think Carlton Jackson should have played?

Yes they would. The lack of support - in my opinion - is that there are still a lot of non-believers. That Central Michigan game KILLED attendance. Do you know how many times throughout the week I heard some variation of "They looked good until they lost to friggin' Central Michigan"...because the average fan doesn't even realize that Central Michigan has a pretty damn good team this year. Like it or not, the average fan enjoyed last year but still looks at it as an anomaly. They see a team that was 6-5 and got to the MAC Title game on a three-way tiebreak. They see a team that won the Title game on a desperation (but maybe lucky) pass. They enjoyed every second of it...but the average fan didn't believe it was more than our team getting hot at the end of the year. The year started with a good showing against Penn State...the huge win over N.C. State followed, and campus was buzzing. The average fan was finally thinking...are they for real??? And then they lost a game to Central Michigan, a team the average fan sees as a lower-tier team. Now the average fan sees us only as a 3 point favorite against lowly Can't State. So what do you have to do to get the fans back? Win, win, and win some more. For the fans to come and stay, Akron needs to prove that they truly are the real deal. I believe they are...you believe they are...a decent amount of people actually does the same...but the average fan doesn't. THAT is why the attendance is a problem, not Ohio State.

You go ahead and do that. Do you really think bashing people who cheer for OSU is going to make them become Zips fans, or bigger Zips fans? I suggest taking a look at this thread: http://zipsnation.org/index.php?showtopic=3669A North Texas fan came over and was respectful anhd kind to a group of fans of the team that just beat down his team. And you know what? Because he was respectful and kind and had nice words to say, I'm going to cheer for North Texas for the rest of the year. It's okay if you hate Ohio State. But by treating fans that are fans of both teams like garbage, you're only helping to drive them further away from wanting to be a part of Akron's fan base. I've talked about it before and I'll say it again...how you carry yourself as a fan is the most important thing in creating a fan base. When I see Can't's crowd, they yell/scream obscenities, they are disrespectful towards other fans, and every other chant is something about someone "sucking". And that makes me so glad to not be a part of that. Central Michigan football fans...Ohio State football fans...Ohio U. basketball fans...the North Texas football fans there last week...all of these groups that I have come in contact with have treated me - a Zips fan - with the utmost respect and haven't talked down to me one bit. Now, this isn't to say they don't do a bit of ribbing or teasing, or cheer wholeheartedly for their team...but they don't talk down to you. Do you want to be like that, or like Can't? I'll tell you which one will help our fan base grow...

Thanks for the post BuckZip...glad to see I'm not alone here. Also glad to see another Zips fan doing everything they can to give back to the University...kudos to you my friend!

Good, thoughtful response bobby...I figured that instead of saying "Hey, you're right...we can just agree to disagree on OSU but in the end, we're both Zips fans" you gave us that...keep writing those letters to the OSU Beat Writer telling them to stop covering OSU
-
In a recent thread, bobbyake said the following:"that's because we all know you like looking at OSU on the front page. You seem to show little pride or passion for the Zips."I wanted to make sure that everyone caught this - one Zips fan questioning another - and also caught my response. This is probably the least accurate statement ever made about me and frankly Bobby, I thought you were better than that. We've had our disagreements about wheteher or not someone can and should cheer for OSU, and I think at this point we can basically agree to disagree. However, don't you ever, ever, EVER question my pride and/or passion for the Zips. You don't know me...how can you even make a comment like that?FYI...I came to the University of Akron in the fall of 2000. I earned my Bachelor's degree last December and started on my Masters degree at UA this fall. So I've been here about 6 years...and in those six years, I've probably missed 4 or 5 football/basketball home games due to work. In those six years, I've traveled to Can't for all but one football/basketball game between the two rivals, to Ohio State to see them a few years back, to Central Michigan...I've been to every MAC Tournament in Cleveland...I went to Detroit (MAC Title game/Motor City Bowl). In fact I left straight from work to go to the MAC Title Game, got home around 3 AM that night and had to wake up at 6:30 AM to teach six classes the next day...but I did it. I've been to soccer and volleball games even though I don't even really like the sports. Last year I made a deal with my students saying that if they wore blue, gold, and/or an Akron shirt the day of the MAC Title game I'd buy them full-sized candy bars. It cost me a bit of money, but it was worth it to see that high school looking very "Akron-like" for a day. Ever since I've entered the teaching profession, I've pushed junior and senior students that I've had in class to look into the University of Akron, telling them all about the school, campus, etc, offering to set up tours for them, even bringing in application information for them. And more than a few of them have either picked or strongly considered Akron when they might not have before. I'm proud to be a student at the University of Akron and love the Zips and, as you can see, show this in many different ways. Disagree with me about cheering for OSU on the side, disagree with me about the ABJ, but don't you dare question my pride and passion for this school.
-
That's making my generation and the University of Akron fans a reason to hate this paper. I've been in Akron about six years now and haven't heard too many people complain about the ABJ...just on this board. Yes, they have people that dislike them...but to say the whole generation and all UA fans hate them is a big, big overstatement. Personally I don't care where the article on the Zips lands...God was good enough to give me hands and thumbs that give me the ability to turn the page...so as long as I have those, it really doesn't make a difference to me.
-
I agree that it's very important. Not only for what a win does to help the program, but also in considering what a loss would do. Dropping a game to our rival that is 3 for their last 13? Trust me, we'd be longing for the attendance we had last night.I didn't expect it to be coming into the year...but HUGE game this Saturday...
-
I know why people around here would care about OSU...I do...I just don't know why they'd care about them more than Akron. That we agree on.
-
Does anyone in Columbus read the ABJ??? Does the ABJ even sell newspapers outside of the Summit County area???The ABJ isn't a national paper. They should be giving sporting events happening locally more attention OSU isn't a local event for Akron. I'm tired of hearing your garbage about OSU being the front runner's team of choice and that everyone in this community roots for the front runner because they have winning tradition and have little ties to this community. I'm tired of hearing you defend OSU's attention on why they should be written about more than Akron. It's all garbage. You wouldn't see the papers in Pitt giving more glory to Penn State than Pitt. Bobby -If you are a newspaper and you want to sell copies of it, you want to put in stories about what people care about the most. When 16,000 (or realistically 13,000) show up for the home opener of a team who is defending conference champion, it's obvious to me and apparently to them that people in this area don't care that much about the Zips. THAT is what I hate, not the ABJ's decisions on what to cover. If we want to be treated and be covered like a big time program, the city, alumni, and students have to do a better job of showing that the Akron Zips are a big deal. Blame the city and the fans for the lack of coverage - the attendance last night was an embarassment, and was a sad and frustrating but truthful look at how much this community gets behind and cares for the Akron Zips. And you know what? Only the city of Akron and the students of the University of Akron can change that.
-
You have got to be out of your mind!!!! This is the first home game for the University of Akron, that's bigger news than a team from Columbus playing a team from penn. Get off OSU's nuts, why don't you just transfer there? Seriously, this is Akron, not Columbus. In the National scope, it was a bigger game. I'm not going to respond to the rest of your post...just more of the same garbage.Again...if I'm an ABJ reporter and I see that 16,000 (generously) showed up to the home opener of the MAC Champion, I'm not going to be pushing to get them front page...I'm going to assume nobody cares.
-
1) Ohio State vs Penn State was a little bit bigger of a game...Akron was basically playing a tune-up game2) With 16,000 (and that being a generous count) showing up for the home opener of a defending conference champion team...do we even deserve the coverage? If I'm a ABJ editor I'm looking at that crowd and coming to the conclusion that people don't give a damn about the team. Say what you want about OSU's fans, but they had 101,000 strong in a downpour. If we truly want to get to the level of OSU and other bigger programs, our fans and community need to start acting like fans of a big time program.3) Why call out Rasor in the topic title? He doesn't decide who writes what at the ABJ. He does a good job of giving coverage to the Zips, one of the few in the area...why include him in your rant?

All you have to do is click your mouse button once RUMPLEMINTZ. Nobody like to read crappy posts twice! To answer the original poster's question...As I pointed out in my post-game thoughts, I thought the students did very well. I wish there had been even more that showed up, but it was still a pretty good showing. The only thing I didn't like, which I also pointed out in my other post, was the overuse of the "AK-Rowdy" chant. I understand that this has become somewhat of a signature chant for our students, and that's great...but we at least need to mix in a few other chants as well. The "AK-Rowdy" chant got so old so fast to me that I wasn't even doing it by the 3rd quarter. I know by looking around I wasn't alone. Maybe more use of the Jets style "Z-I-P-S ZIPS ZIPS ZIPS!"? One other suggestion for my fellow fans...defense chants are nice but aren't as effective with smaller crowds. I'd say it'd work much better to simply make noise - yell, scream, do the "ooooooooooooooooh" - whatever...just make noise to make it harder for them to hear. Again, not sure if it'd work with smaller crowds...I just remember it working against Miami a few years back. Kudos on the following:1) The free t-shirts...they look nice2) The organizers of the group this year. The reminder emails are good, the tables set up inside the RB were good...it seems very organized, which is definitely a good thing.3) To the people who painted their faces/chests/stomachs whatever. Love the school spirit (even though only one of the girls that did it was attractive )4) To everyone who came...now let's get people out to that Can't game. I made a Facebook event...if you're on Facebook join it and invite every Akron friend you have:http://uakron.facebook.com/event.php?eid=2210437392GO ZIPS!

Whining? When a D1 college placekicker goes 2-4 in XP attempts and misses a 12 yard field goal, I'm going to rip him. I'm sorry - and I hope I'm wrong - but I don't see Domonkos winning us any games this year...we'll be winning despite his shoddy performances.

I think you took what I said the wrong way. I don't blame the students for the attendance. I think the turnout was great for students. I'm just saying it'd be nice to take it even a step further and get more there. That wasn't really in response to your comments or others. More of a preemptive strike in order to cut off the inevitable "blame the students for bad attendance, they don't take enough pride in their school" excuse. Gotcha...
