Duquesne Basketball Coach Keith Dambrot
Let'sGoZips94 replied to Valpo Zip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
I think part of the reason we won that game was because guys like Antino (whom, if I remember correctly, had a pretty good game) are from the Houston area. Also, Houston didn't want to be in that game. Throwing in the towel/giving up is completely different than not playing with fire/passion. I will never accuse this team of forfeiting/quitting/throwing in the towel. I will say that they seemed to walk through the MAC Championship Game, while Can't came out like a bat out of Hell. Did Can't earn it with their effort (complementing Can't... )? Yes. Did we assist them with our lack of passion/fire/energy? You betcha. That game was within 1-3 possessions the entire time, which is a testament - in my opinion - to how much better we were than Can't skill wise. We just didn't apply ourselves, which makes me believe (having the knowledge we do now) that some of the guys had pre-determined transfers. I'm not saying everyone didn't apply themselves, but teammates feed off of each other, and when a couple guys don't want to be there, it can kill any energy for the other players. -

I do. When you don't show up in a Championship game, against your arch rival, with essentially a home crowd, and a ticket to the Big Dance on the line... You've pretty much signaled to me that you do not want to be here. When you don't blow out inferior teams all year because you lack 40 minutes of desire and effort, you've signaled to me you don't want to be here. -

I think it was posted in another thread that some of these transfers were pre-determined before KD's departure. -
I have switched my HC preference. I'm all in on Kevin Kuwik.

#1 I want to hire a guy that gets us to the next level. #2 I want to hire a guy that gets poached by the next level. Either scenario works for me, because more than likely, they are synonymous.

Dambrot says 'yes' to Duquesne this time
Let'sGoZips94 replied to GeorgeThomasABJ's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
1. Lost all 3 NCAA Tournament games, one of them by 40. 2. Continued to bring in weak, WEAK opponents. -
No doubt. I'm not saying he should have paid for the renovation all by himself. But he kept whining and whining about no renovations/new arena. Ponying up money himself, and going public with that to get help, would have been a good way to jump start the project.
-
Let's think about this. Dambrot wanted a new arena/JAR renovation, right? A few years ago, he signs a contract that makes him the highest paid coach in the MAC at over $600k a year. He then coaches this last year and earns a retention bonus, bumping his total annual salary over $900k for this past year. My point was, instead of consistently whining that there isn't progress on a new arena/JAR renovation (which will have the bill passed onto the public/students via taxes/tuition increase), why not make a statement and say, "Keep your retention bonus, but it has to go into a JAR renovation to jump start the project." Or how about, when you sign your fat, $600k /year contract, put in there than you will take $500k for the first X amount of years, as long as that extra $100k+ goes towards a JAR renovation/new arena? Then have some language that feeds the money in on the back end, when revenue increases because we have a better arena and more program success. That was my point. Sorry if it's stupid of me to think it would be nice for a coach to maybe put the students/public/University as a whole first for once, especially with the knowledge that the school is in financial trouble. If he left because of the money at Duquense, why didn't he leave years ago?

Not sure I would mind that. I don't know if it's necessarily a splash, but the guy beat Kentucky in the NIT. That's, what, 1/3 of the big wins that Dambrot had here?
-
I wouldn't. Let them go. I don't want anyone here that doesn't want to be here. Also, I hate when schools "block" a transfer. If a student - not an athlete - transfers, there is no "block" put in place, at least I don't believe so. These are 18+ year olds, AKA adults. They're big boys; let them make their own decisions. Not to mention I think it's a bad look for a mid-major like us to be blocking transfers. It wouldn't make me feel warm and fuzzy about a University if I were a recruit, that the University is preventing student-athletes from furthering their playing careers and academics with a different University that might suit them better.
-
At the same time, if Dambrot was truly loyal to the University, couldn't he have done this in retrospect by taking a slight up-front pay cut to allow the University some financial breathing room to upgrade the JAR at the very least?

My list, in order... 1. Boals 2. Lamont Paris 3. McNeese 4. That Asst. from Xavier

It's really ironic how much Dambrot's lack of self accountability reflects LeBron's. -

See ya, Dambrot. I hope we schedule Duquesne and kick their rear end. -
Everything I've heard about Josh is that he's a great person off the court. That, to me, means this is automatically a big loss. However, with this news, I can't help but think that his body language all season foreshadowed these events. He may be a half step too slow for this level, but he also seemed like he didn't necessarily want to be here. Just an observation. Wishing Josh nothing but the best.

PD Article on UA Sports Spending
Let'sGoZips94 replied to clarkwgriswold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Pretty disturbing numbers. I don't fault the University for its financial troubles. I think their marketing department is pretty poor, but the athletics budget drain is 100% the corrupt NCAAs fault. They've taken schools and have turned them into businesses, with essentially the only source of income being athletics, particularly football. In the article it states that Ohio State is the only Ohio university that 100% funds their athletics through athletics revenue. So it's not like UA is some outlier that dug themselves into a rare hole. -
Zips at Texas-Arlington — NIT Round 2 (Mon 8 pm)
Let'sGoZips94 replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Not sure why anyone is worrying about us not contending next year - it's the MAC. The question is, do we grow or regress? If you're focused on competing in the MAC, you're going to regress. If you're focused on competing at the national stage, you're going to grow. I don't care who we have coming back, who we don't have coming back, etc. It is the coaching staff's (led by the head coach) job to bring in new talent and develop the current talent to grow and reach the next level. It is also their job to put a system in place that gives the players the best chance to succeed. We shall see what happens. As for last night... -
Zips at Texas-Arlington — NIT Round 2 (Mon 8 pm)
Let'sGoZips94 replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I like the Cal State Northridge sign. Welcome to the MATADOME. That's AWESOME. The arena blows, but they nailed the marketing on that one. Maybe we can rename the JAR play off of having a kangaroo mascot, and call it The Outback? "Welcome to The Outback! Home to a bunch of poisonous, killer animals and Zippy!" The JAR blows, but it's FAR from the worst DI gym in the country, and it has A LOT of potential. Our ends have deep stands, unlike many of this gyms that just have walls behind their baskets. 4 sides of seating makes for a fun atmosphere, when designed correctly. I'm not a fan of cavernous arenas like what OSWho plays in. Give me an on-top-of-you crowd to provide a solid college atmosphere. I just wish the JAR had better seating (I'm surprised there haven't been lawsuits regarding what those wooden bleachers do to the lower back) and a better concourse area. If they choose to renovate the JAR, they could really make it something special, and give Akron a strong home court advantage, more-so than we already have. To keep this post a bit more on topic with the thread, I'd put the over/under point total for this game at 170. I'd be tempted to take the over on that, which is scary. I hope we're on from deep. I also think Big Dog can have a field day with their less beefy front court. -
These are universities first and foremost, no matter how hard the NCAA tries to turn them into athletically-funded businesses. In my opinion, if you aren't good enough for the NCAA or NIT, well, that sucks. Why use the funds to play in a Participation Trophy Tournament? Instead, allocate those funds into travel plans to play in a tournament the following season, or to travel and play a P5 school that could help you get into the NCAAs or NIT next year. The snub job by the NIT to not give the Travis/Joyce Zips a bid is the reason the 3 other tournaments popped up, and it's a completely different situation. To me, adding those tournaments and asking the universities to pay for the games isn't the answer; in fact, I think it's a cop-out to cover up for their garbage, corrupt postseason selection system. It sucks that Rome and Dru got screwed, but the answer isn't more postseason tournaments; the answer is to collectively challenge the selection process. Raise Hell in a professional manner.

I may be in the minority, but I will NEVER understanding supporting a rival. I don't like how sports have become so buddy-buddy. I nearly throw up listening to LeBron talk about how the Warriors are a rival and such. I just want someone to turn into Jackie Moon and yell, "SOMEBODY HIT SOMEBODY!" Me personally, I wish nothing but losses for Can't, OU, Miami, and Buffalo. That being said, I do respect OU and Buffalo for turning down the CBI/CIT/Vegas tournaments. Not sure how any school can justify spending the money on those meaningless tournaments anymore.

Zips @ Central Michigan (Keene to NBA draft)
Let'sGoZips94 replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
When is the last time - if ever - a MAC player chose to forgo their senior season and declare for the NBA Draft? -
There are quite a few defenders of the Mid-Majors, though. And quite frankly, it doesn't matter what the fans think. It's not anything we didn't already know - P5 schools and fan bases think their crap doesn't stink.
