I'll be honest...kiss my @ss with your "holy-er than thou" attitude. Yes, they won because there are so many STUPID people out there willing to give someone $1M for a parking lot or spilling hot coffee in there own lap.okay, you disagree with me and it pisses you off, and since I didn't insult anyone, you have to claim I have a "holier than thou" attitude. Just like the topic, above, I think you need to get over it.

What amazes me is how often I see people in politics and life always finding sooooo many rationalizations to legitimzie their viewpoint... but the viewpoint always stands. It's the core.Taxes blah blah blah.I guarantee you that if Akron (or the State or whoever) was using eminent domain to put a highway straight through the middle of campus, eminent domain would be evil, and all different types of rationalizations would be used to legitimize that viewpoint. Can we be honest here. We want a football stadium. We root for it like fans and we take it personal that the university has to payout to property owners. It is what it is. I honestly would have taken any offer from the university that was significantly higher than market value, but that's just me. You have the right to fight it, and they won. Sux to be us.

I'm in this camp, but if I was on the jury, I would have recommended no more than 50% above market appraisal or 50% above cost to locate the business to a spot of equal or better business opportunity, not 3mill.In other words, you don't just say "Here's what your land is worth, now take a hike!" just because you got the government involved. Okay, I can't give my neighbor the appraised property value and then kick them out. My neighbor has rights. People need to be compensated above what your appraise their property for, for a variety of reasons.1) They have to move. There are many expenses involved.2) They have to move. It puts them out of business for a time.3) They have to move. The new property could cost more than what their existing one is appraised for.4) They have to move. Their new property may not even be as advantageous to their business as the old one.5) They actually owned that property. Hello, McFly. I know that there are limitations to ownership rights, but you can't just bump people because you want to.The point is that THEY HAVE TO MOVE, and they should be compensated for the fact that THEY HAVE TO MOVE, not just for the value of the property that you are TAKING away from them. But I also think that there should be some (nothing major) degree of punitive effect, not just compensatory. I think giving them 3Mill is overboard, but I don't think they should have just been given street value either.

I'm not sure what is sexier... I huge rack of ribs, or a woman who can deadlift 500 stones

I dunno, I tend to agree with Zip N' Dots on that one.I guess different people have different psychological makeups, but I think some people naturally rebel against advertising slogans. If I wasn't already inclined to favor the team and I saw the slogan "this is your team", my mental response would simply be, "no thanx, you can keep it"

 It's not hard to be cheesy"be a fan, when it began""say you were here, not the armchair"personally, I think it would be catchier if it was just "a part from the start" or "a part of it from the start of it"psychologically speaking, it's not an invasive command (because it lacks the verb) like "be a part of it", which is basically saying to people "join up, we need you. (we're desperate)"."apart from the start" implies, don't miss the boat. Others are doing it.

Depends on the beer. For example -- The Leinenkugle's Summer Shandy that I tried for the first time at Canal Park last week...which tasted like 1/2 Mike's Hard Lemonade and 1/2 Pabst...would not be a suitable payment.Oh! I know people who like Leinenkugle beers. Do you like that stuff Cap'n? It's all got a flowery aftertaste like many of the Sam Adams beers. Bleh.

Great...err..Highly Controversial Column By Bob Dyer

Why would you say that? Because you are still on your soap box?I actually said in one of my earlier posts that you can't create artificial equity. There are always going to be some places that are better than others.... and which ever way the chips fall, there are always going to be some people complaining. I disagree wholeheartedly. There are public schools that spend more money per student and still fail to educate. The real issue is how you run your institution. In most private schools parents know they are spending their own dollars on their child's education (on top of the fact that they also pay property taxes for local schools) and the parents expect more. The students also have a different attitude. They don't see the school that they attend as a place that has to take them because the government provides it as a right. They know that they could get kicked out. This makes all the difference in the world. -

Classy!... and I just realized that whatever you typed after that must be right simply because you made that declaration. Are you just reacting emotionally, or did you read some of the posts you are replying to?IF we privatize public schools, you would likely be giving Buchtel and Kenmore the ability to toss out the bad apples (invariably forcing some of the bad apples to reform their ways or end up on the streets and likely in a correctional institution rather than the education system ruining other kid's educations). In some ways, you are actually ranting for the same thing as the people you just called ignorant. wow.Try to get past the buzzwords that set you off and think about what is being said. -

What are you talking about? Didn't you read g-mann's assertion that public school kids outperform their private school counterparts on standardized tests?I believe it was something about the top scores being higher. Statistically speaking, since many more students are in public schools, I think you'll have that. -

why not?while we are at it, why not 'curve' GPAs, SATs, and other benchmarks of public school kids to make it fair. After all, it doesn't matter whether or not they perform better, it only matters that no one appears to so they can still feel good about themselves. What I don't understand is, if we have all these different divisions in high school athletics, why do we need to split things up even more? If private schools are so much better, why not just put most of them in division-1 with some of the good public schools (glenville for example?) and bump everyone else down one.[sarc]Oh no wait, that would still give them prestige. You're right. Let's segregate them like lepers! [/sarc] -

Isn't that the point that seems to elude everyone despite how obvious it is?Someone has an agenda. Most people don't.In other words, the only reason this would be an issue with anyone is if they "cared" about which schools were winning championships. Let me illustrate it with an analogy. Why is it that, among all the people in the U.S. and all the people in Florida, it would be Hillary Clinton would sue to get the primary election votes counted? Why wouldn't it be the people whose votes may not count? The answer is obvious. Hillary is the one who gets hurt the most. The concept of "letting votes count" is the tool. The people who complain about a situation are always the people who have decided that such a situation does not suit their desires.I went to a public school that hangs state championship banners for several sports. They are not perennial champions, but they have had their shots. The system is not rigged. The problem is that SOME people want to impose as much artificially regulated "equity" as they can in order to give certain interests a better "chance".You know what? Just let the kids play. -

I have a question (as a public skewl graduate); Do athletes at private schools get tuition scholarships?I don't understand the axe grinding. Are there people out there who don't know that private schools are not as geographically constrained about who attends? If your state forces people to pay for their schools through local property taxes, yet does not allow them to choose where their children get an education except to pay for that education out of their pockets EXTRA, then you have no right to complain when those schools out perform the public schools either in academics or athletics -
but how can you take the point when your unit scatters?
-
Seriously. But actually, if he hadn't fired his gun, I think his problems would be much much smaller. It's really not too uncommon for some kids to get busted for driving under suspended license or sometimes even fleeing. These are things that could have been worked out and his life would be back to normal in a year or less. It's a shame, but he's gotta face the music. You don't roll out with guns and ski masks looking for an ice cream cone.

:o do they have wifi down there? I never thought to bring my laptop.

You misunderstand. If it was a Can't player who did this, there would be jokes about it on this board.Oh, and the thing about not being able to outrun the cops did make me snicker.LOL.How much you wanna bet they were laughing about that very same thing down at the station.Get off your high horse
