  1. It isn't rocket science.
May not be rocket science, but it's a somewhat foreign and ellusive concept to people who don't understand this market.True, frontrunning and bandwagoning are a normal phenomenon everywhere, but some teams/markets/institutions have a "loyal following". I agree with you, it's a bit unrealistic to expect that when you haven't done anything that barely moves the needle on "bigtime showing" meter, but I think some coaches and institutional staff feel that the student body and the local yokals will drop their dime and show up just because it's "their school", and in some ways, maybe they have a point. It's a tough unrealistic in what is basically a commuter school, but I understand why they would think (or hope) for it.
  2. I really like the location used in the drawings, but I noticed the dates on the plans are from May of 2005, I'm sure alot has changed since then.
I dunno. If you look at the "accellerated master schedule" they wanted to start breaking ground for site work in january 2007. I would think that if they were anywhere near following that, then by now, a lot is probably already set in stone
  3. Looks like Concept 5 is probably what is going to be built.....at least that is the most recent picture I've seen the most of. It also has a later date on it, which indicates to me that the folks at the University sat down and did some brainstorming with HNTB. Still, I say Option 1 is my favorite by far....though I can see where sun could be an issue. The other options would most likely block the sun with the pressbox. Don't we play most of our games at night anyway?
If you look at footballstadiumspecs.pdf, you will see it's called "finalized conceptual plan". It looks like they made a choice. However, it doesn't seem set in stone. In the addendum:"Alternate sites will be suggested for the consultant's review and analysis."
  4. I'm not sure what good "coordinating with the Wolstein group" is going to do since it's my understanding that they're not putting up any money for the proposed soccer stadium anyway. What motivation would the Wolsteins have to agree to have "their" facility, funded by taxpayers, placed in Akron?
You don't get in bed with the devil. Not that I got anything against Wolstein, but you gotta understand the nature of the beast. A guy like that wants control.
  5. Look I am from Massillon Oh, born and raised went to the University of Akron. My point when comparing Columbus to Macedonia is the fact that Soccer is waaaay more popular down here compared to up there! And no one attends the professional games here so my question is what makes people think the will have a larger attendance in a location where there is less people I understand Macedonia is not on an island, but you can't compare MLS to the NFL or NBA it just isn't as popular here as it is in other countries. I agree this is a waste of taxpayers money.
It's a good Question, Ryno, and I wanted to apologise if my last reply to you seemed rude. It wasn't meant to be.
  6. :DIf the soccer thing flops, the only thing it hurts is taxpayers. We get taxed for everything, now all of a sudden we are frugal? fI'm not sure that I have even heard how much the taxes will be for the average person.I noticed that when they needed to pass a tax for the AKRON zoo as a county issue, the zoo suddenly got named summit county zoo on the ballots.

  7. zip81, regardless if you are correct or not, basically what you are doing is attacking the soccer stadium because you perceive it as a threat to the zips football stadium. To me, this is akin to lobbying the city to block a neighborhood resident on your street from trying to get his sidewalk fixed because your afraid it will hurt your chances to attempt the same thing. Argh, crappy metaphor. I am trying to find a way to verbalize how sickening it looks when people would go so negative on something else because they view it as a threat to something virtually distinct

  8. Columbus has a population much larger than Macedonia,
hahahaha! The logic people use amazes me sometimes.AsIf Macedonia was an island isolated in Lake Erie or something!Okay, Macedonia is between two cities. But, perhaps unlike Columbus, those cities themselves (while the densest population) are rarely the prime ticket buyers for pro sporting events. Go to any Cavs, Indians, or Browns game, and you will find suburbanites in the seats. This phenomenon might be even more exxagerated for soccer. So, if you move out into suburbia, you actually get closer to your market. Macedonia is between TWO cities, but in the prime market for both.
  9. If wolstein (or howver you spell his name) comes out of nowhere and is able to rally local and county politicians, and people, to his cause, and it takes the wind out of UA campus stadium's sails, then it's the UofA's fault. How long have we been talking about getting a stadium on campus? Years! .... and we haven't rallied jack schit to our cause.

  10. The reason I think it is important (particularly in contrast to margin of victory) is that it can be less dependent on your opponent. I'm not necessarily saying that our opponents so far are fluffcakes, but, other than bringing a strong defence and denying good shots, our ability to hit shots is much more independent than our margin of victory. It's a good sign. If we can keep hitting our shots above 50% all year, particularly when we play conference opponents, in my opinion it's going to be a great year.

  12. New to the forum, but how about checking out SMU's Gerald J. Ford Stadium. Seats 30,000 and construction begun in '97 and ran a cost of about 42 mill.
That is the perfect stadium! :D Check out this link to see what I mean. http://www.ellerbebecket.com/portfolio_template_121.htmlThat is exactly what i have envisioned for a long time. The brick facade, the grass end zone and believe it or not a definite "RubberBowl" feel. Look at the phot of the press bow and it kinda reminds me of the RB. In all seriousness that is a fantastic stadium that I think everyone could be proud of.
I like that one too. I agree that the exterior design would fit in (and comliment) our campus....yet obviously, we wouldn't copy... but it would be great for inspirationsmethford_ext_stands.jpgsmethford_ext_curb.jpg
  13. Your arguments are so non-sensical that I have to believe you work for the Wolsteins and are in on their mega spam campaign.
I have provided more facts than anyone in this topic. I saw some articles posted, but everyone is speaking from opinion about how they think this will hurt UofA (and then using a "this will bomb" rationale to support them). I have posted facts, such as the negotiations between the development group and the communities, and information about studies that have been done. Now, I fear it's just one of those internet 'last word' type arguements..... and I'll let you have it.
  14. How about we agree to disagree...however, If they build this thing, I do want to talk to you in the future ...after the team folds, and the taxpayers are stuck paying for an empty stadium.
I am going to try to hunt down some sources, because I remember reading that when Macedonia was negotiating with Wolstein, they wanted ironclad promise of payment for a certain number of years regardless of how the team does.
