I was thinking the same thing. I'm the same size as this kid. When I go to a D-1 college football game I want to see skilled position athletes that blow me away! I want to pay money to see athletes that leave me in shock-and-awe; athletes that cause me to say, "Whoa! How on earth does someone that size move like that?!?!" I'm 5'8" 175 and pretty athletic (if I do say so myself ). But I have no doubt that this kid could certainly run circles around me. But I wanna see WR's that can run circles around me and that are 6'2". I want to take friends to Zips' games that normally don't go to Zips games and have them be blown away by the athletes on the field, not look at the roster and say, "Man, he's small." It just adds to the area's disgusting misconception that, "ANYONE can play at Akron, right? A 3rd stringer from McKinley could start at Akron, right? Massillon would beat UA by 4 touchdowns, right?" Maybe this dude will be another David Harvey (athletically - not academically!). David was an underwhelming physical specimen but, man-oh-man, a flat-out player. But 5'9" 170 just doesn't pass the D-1 eyeball test. Sounds more like a Malone, Walsh, Mount Union or Can't WR.

Thanks for the invite, TexanMark! I'll reply too, so you don't feel shafted... but I'm not going to be able to make the 'Cuse trip either. I'm pretty busy on weekends and don't often have the ability to make road trips. But again, thank you for the invite & have fun!

Wow, what horrible news. I was planning on making a couple CVCA matches this year to see Ben play. Here's to a quick and full recovery.

He is so the man. What did we, the good citizens of this city, do to have the good fortune of having the greatest basketball player on the planet also be the most generous homeboy one could possibly imagine?
-
I think the Akron/YSU rivalry would be a good thing. A great way to start the year. I'd be more excited over that rivalry game than just hoping we can keep it close w/ Wisky for 3 quarters. We'd probably win 8 out of 10 games w/ YSU. They'd win once in a while, which would be a good thing for the interest of the rivalry.
-
Though there is a lot of disagreement about this on the board, I've thought for years that we should open up each season, AT HOME, against YSU. 1. It gives us another good weather home game - not many of those to be had in Akron, 2. Start the season w/ a W instead of an L. 3. YSU would make a natural rival w/ a good attendance 4. College programs don't get to scrimmage, or have pre-season games, so IMHO going off and playing your 1st game of the year against an elite program is just asking for a loss. Play YSU 1st, get some of the bugs out, and then go on the road to Wisky or OSU.

Yup. If we get good QB play we win the MAC. If we get poor QB play we'll be lucky to get to .500. Easy as that.

Scouts write up about Zeke @ WV Jamfest
Blue & Gold replied to FromdaBurgh's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Thanks Gamechanger!!! Go Zeke! Go Zips! Can't wait to see Zeke in the blue & gold LBJ/23's!!! -
All we need is a QB. Without one we're gonna be lousy again this year; with one we'll win the MAC.
-
No Great Lakes. Great Lakes is a Cleveland micro-brewery. I know that the BJ thinks Akron is a suburb of Cleveland, but not me! If we go w/ a special brew go w/ an Akron micro-brewed product.

MAC Football Preview Magazine Available
Blue & Gold replied to MACReport's topic in Akron Zips Football
If our QB play isn't drastically better this season we'll end up on the bottom. Buuuuuut, if the QB play is much improved, then we should be the best team in the league - bar none. -
For convenience sake, I just wanted to move this back to the top; hope others were thinking the same.

They were motivated to play. They're human beings. They're athletes. When you get athletes together they are motivated to win at anything and everything - bowling, golf, poker, uno, duck-duck-goose, etc., etc. Athletes are ridiculously competitive like that. It doesn't matter what you're doing, you want to be the best - let alone if you're playing basketball - the game in which these athletes find their identity. These guys are not professional athletes that play so many games throughout the season that they hardly know what city they're in on any given night. Pros do often take a game "off" here or there and then kick it up a couple notches for the playoffs. That's one reason I love college sports - those guys ALWAYS want to be out there and they're out for blood. And then to not protect your home court? Pleeeeaze, those guys were motivated as all get out. The Zips were just a better team.

Akron wi-fi network...will it last?
Blue & Gold replied to ZippyRulz's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I can't see them keeping loge owners from brining in their laptops. They may object to me having my laptop in the lowly General Admission section though! -
Elton Writes on Zeke Again
Blue & Gold replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Elton is correct about the Zips never being overall MAC champs - only MAC East champs. I've got a Can't State alum friend and we go to games together- he prefers the Can't State games while I prefer the Zips games. But he not so subtly pointed that out to me one night. What could I say... he was right! Zeke's gonna change all that! -
Student Applications up 17%
Blue & Gold replied to g-mann17's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I was recently at the Marlington high school graduation ceremony and 2 of their 4 valedictorians are going to attend UA in the fall! Two years ago 3 of the 4 Waterloo high school valedictorians enrolled at UA. -
Nice pics once again! One response to your post read, "Keep these threads coming!" And then asked the question, "Is the Mayflower currently occupied?" I cringed and then rolled my eyes at that one. If only he knew the clientele of the Mayflower...Also, does the UA school of culinary arts have any plans of opening a nice, semi-formal, student-run restaurant in the beautiful Quaker SqUAre? It's a beautiful landmark structure and I'd be disappointed if it weren't utilized in some open-to-the-public dining/retail capacity.

GoZips, thanks for sifting out the MAC players for us; interesting stuff! I've said it before and I'll say it again, Humpty Hitchens is literally one of the very best high school players I've ever seen! Now, to qualify that statement, I must be honest and say that I have only seen him play twice, and on tv at that. But having said that, he is the quickest player I've ever seen, can go left or right and can stop-and-pop on a dime - it's indefensible & sick & will make your jaw drop. I can't wait to see Humpty sporting the new Nike/LBJ23 blue & gold uni's!!!

2009 Combo Guard Orlando Williams
Blue & Gold replied to mollautt's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Dude, that's very cool that you're writing for Scout! But I couldn't access either article w/o a membership. -
I like the new marks. On a tragic side note, the front page of the MAC website now reads, "New Logo... Same Success." Uh, oh!

Interesting Commericals from UMKC
Blue & Gold replied to Zip N' Dots's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Those commercials were excellent! Top notch in both conception and execution; impressive originality, creativity and production. Wow, I was embarrassed about our bush-league, cheese-covered-meatball "Be A Part From The Start" commercial and jingle but man, after watching those, now I just want to go shoot myself. -
OUTSTANDING JOB ZIPSRIFLE!!! Great collection of pictures! I didn't know the arches outside of the Student Wellness Center were remnants from the old Spicer School! Also, I believe that the two renderings shown of the new apartment/retail complex on Main Street are both accurate renderings. The first (your picture number 5) is of the northeast corner of the site - looking southwest, whereas the second rendering (your picture number 6) is of the opposite corner of the site; southwest corner looking northeast. The only way I could tell was by the fact that the current 8-story building which they are leaving standing - that houses that Japanese restaurant - is in a different location in each shot. In picture #5 the building is to the right of the picture; in picture #6 it is to the left.

Yes, well, I remember meeting Frank Stams at the Hula Bowl, along with Lou Holtz after Notre Dame's national title. He was REALLY enthusiastic, and happy to see my AKRON tee-shirt. But I remember he was smaller than my own 6' and well under 200 lbs. Wasn't he a linebacker? Lou Holtz looked more like a player. You're saying Frank Stamms was surprisingly small? I saw Frank Stamms recently at Prestwick C.C. He's huge! I'll bet he's at least 6'3" and 230.

I'm not able to view the cameras either and I've not had any trouble since they went live.

I was just as excited about the Morgan brothers (Christian and Marco) signing with Akron as just about any two athletes I can remember, as I watched both dominate in high school. But at this level neither one of them ended up panning out at all.
