2 Future Zips Earn 1st Team All-Ohio!
Blue & Gold posted a topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Both Brett McKnight and Ronnie Steward earned spots on the 1st Team All-Ohio roster. Brett McKnight in D-1 and Ronnie Steward in D-2.Brett McKnight, 6-6, Lancaster, 26.6 ppgRonald Steward, 5-10, Columbus Eastmoor Academy, 20.3 ppgGo Zips! -
Say what? I love that chant, but I prefer the "Ziggy Zoggy Ziggy Zoggy Oy Oy Oy!" version of it. Likewise, say what? Ziggy Zoggy Ziggy Zoggy oy oy oy!? I've never heard that, but it's pretty funny! Maybe I'll start shouting that.

I like the matchups with Kentucky and Indiana - better those two, than say, Florida and Michigan! If we play Big 10 and SEC schools, we should shoot for the schools we've got a 50/50 shot at beating, not the schools that we'd have to shock the world in order to beat.I like the UCONN matchup. It's a Big East opponent. It's an opponent of our caliber. It's definitely a winnable game. Hopefully UCONN is coming to Akron in '09.I like the CMU game. They're definitely not a West cupcake, but I'd rather pay $15 to see CMU than EMU! Even if EMU is an easy win, the CMU is a marquee MAC matchup and should be a good game! However, if we win the East and CMU wins the West, then we'd play CMU again just 8 days later in Detroit! Kinda wierd. How about getting a series going with Cincy? We've got a connection there, last year's game was a good game, and they're another Big East team of our caliber.

How's it going Redleg? You must be new to the board? Nice to have you! They're going to place the new stadium north of Exchange Street, just west of the expressway. Between Exchange and the new fieldhouse. We're all waiting with baited breath for the architectural renderings! -
Great to have you here, Steve! Careful with what you read here, though. This board gives us a forum in which we can have knee-jerk reactions to anything and everything! You're going to really enjoy your time here at Akron! You'll find the students to be friendly and the fans to be die-hard supportive (some fans turn on their players when a team happens to be losing. I've never really found that to be the case here. Of course we all want to win, but if a player is playing hard and giving it his/her all, that's generally what we're most pleased with!)You're going to have fun, make friends, get a very good education, play close to home, be a part of a really cool team with a bunch of good guys, and help elevate this rising program to national recognition! We're all excited to meet you in person and to get to watch you rock the JAR!

I agree with those wishing to see a return to the high-stepping swing style.I, however, DO like the white pants. I think they're sharp!Know what I dislike? The "Eat 'em up, eat 'em up, go Zips, go!" chant. I find it to be awfully hokey and I don't ever hear anyone actually join in on the chant. Could we possibly drop it?How does this sound for a halftime show: popular movie theme songs? Star Wars. Superman. Raiders of the Lost Ark. I know I'd be rocked! Also, once we build our new stadium and have skull-sessions in the JAR (though we should call 'em something else right?) I think the movie theme songs would be a cool theme. If you've been to a skull session at OSU, you'll see that they only do the fight song maybe twice. The rest of the time is filled up with songs most people don't know. Movie themes, however, would be cool and fun!

Letter To Coach Dambrot, Coaches & Team.
Blue & Gold replied to Zip Watcher's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Thanks KD! We love you and your team! We love Dru and Rome and Ced! We all can't wait for next season to begin! -
Well said. If Bow Down's criteria was followed to it's logical conclusion, shouldn't our "flagship" university be American University? I follow Pitt athletics more closely than Ohio State. At least we're only one and a half hours from Pittsburgh. We're a good 2 hours from Columbus. Screw Columbus and whatever schools may be down there. We're from Akron!

Thanks Nav! You're right! I had misread the article. That's even better news! Here's the paragraph I had misread:"The project is centered around a 25,000-30,000 seat stadium. It includes more than $120 million worth of other buildings, including dorms, a new parking deck and retail development." -
Could someone post a picture of Brett McKnight? I saw him play last year, but I've heard that he's "transformed" his body this year? I'd really like to get a visual of him! He's got good ball handling skills, passing skills and, from what I hear, can hit the 3!
-
Thanks Timmyboy! I just finished watching the link to Dawawn Whitner's highlights. He looks excellent, but is that 235 lbs. listing correct?! If it is, he's a good 50 lbs. too light to be playing DT at the D-1 level.

That's the first time I had heard the $120M total project figure used. That sounds more like it! That has the potential of being a beautiful complex. Even if the final $54M stadium-only design is a double-grandstand scheme, with $66M of additional surrounding structures, the entire scope of the project will very likely have the big-time, "destination" feel that we're all crossing our fingers for! After trudging through life this past Saturday night and Sunday, man, we need more positive reads such as this one. -
Yep. The regular season is meaningless. I hate to say this, but Bobby Knight was right.
-
It's good to hear a fan more seasoned than I tell of how this is the hardest loss he's ever had to swallow. I've been a hard core Zips fan for 15 years now and I was pretty much devastated Saturday night. So at least I know I'm not taking this loss out of perspective. Thankfully, there are a million things more important in life than sports. This was a great season and man, we've now got some lifetime memories from that MAC tourney! We'll be telling our grandkids about that one.

Take a long hike, Thad. He's NOT a suckeye. He's a Zip. He's kept it real and he's a homeboy. He's not from Columbus.I sure hope the national media doesn't start associating LeBron with Columbus State! We have to have a LeBron-Akron association!"LeBron's a Zips fan!" Clap, clap, clap clap clap. "LeBron's a Zips fan!" Clap, clap, clap clap clap!

Tell me this article doesn't make ya just wanna Buckeyes players like new LeBron uniformsCHICAGO - Having the logo of LeBron James on the front of their shorts did not help Ohio State channel the energy of the Cavaliers' star. But the Buckeyes' Nike uniforms that made their debut Friday in the Big Ten Tournament were a hit with the players.``They're very comfortable,'' freshman Daequan Cook said.``I like them a lot. (Especially) the shorts,'' junior Othello Hunter said. The jerseys are more form-fitting, and the shorts are longer than the previous style.``It gives the refs a better opportunity to call fouls if somebody is grabbing your jersey because they're so tight,'' senior Ron Lewis said. ``If your jersey is coming out, it's not because of you.''OSU coach Thad Matta saw the uniforms for the first time Friday. ``I was a little bit nervous with the length of the shorts and had a couple guys change. Nothing major,'' Matta said. ``But I liked the look of them. I feel honored that Nike would think this highly of us to do this.''James jumped from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School to the NBA, but he has said if he had gone to college, his choice would have been Ohio State.``For LeBron to take a special interest in our program has been amazing,'' Matta said. ``Talking with him this summer and his people, he's a Buckeye. And when you have a guy like LeBron James with his stature who cares enough to put his logo on your uniform, it's flattering that he would do that for us.''-- Marla RidenourHow about those nice quotes from Thad Matta? "For LeBron to take a special interest in our program has been amazing," Uh, he hasn't, Thad. That's a Nike move. NOT LeBron. LeBron takes a special interest in the University of AKRON Zips!Go Screw off.And screw anything OSU. We're not from Columbus. We're from Akron, baby! Go Zips!

Every year at the MAC tourney, when all the mascots are at the Q, it just solidly reaffirms the literal reality that ZIPPY IS THE GREATEST MASCOT IN ALL OF SPORTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Watcher's View: MAC Semi's Postgame
Blue & Gold replied to Zip Watcher's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
The "Got Wood?" sign is absolutely hilarious! The "K.S.U.cks!" sign is priceless and timeless!!!!! That one is classic that can be used from here to eternity! -
Actually, didn't Q go straight over to the Akron bench and shake everyones hand before the teams even lined up in the post-game handshake lines? I don't think many people noticed that because everyone, including myself, was watching the Zips celebrate around centercourt. The only way I know this is because my friend pointed it out to me. He actually thought it was cool how Q went straight over to the Akron bench.Hey, I'm not Can't fan. This is just for the sake of honesty and clarification.

Aligning schedule to stadium timeline
Blue & Gold replied to LosAngelesZipFan's topic in Akron Zips Football
Yep! Bounced right off his hands and into the hands of an OSU receiver who then took it the distance. -
Let's go easy on his physical appearance guys. The dude's had some health problems. Heart problems, if I'm not mistaken.
-
I'd also like to say you guys are GREAT!!! I'm 34 and have been a regular at the JAR for about 15 years now, and I really must say I've never seen it rock so hard! But what most impresses me is how CREATIVE you Rowdies are! Please don't let yourselves sink to the embarassing level that the Can't students sunk to Sunday night. They truly made fools of themselves. Dropping the F-bomb and all the middle fingers and crotch grabbing. It was literally sad. So, Rowdies, keep doing what you're doing! Stay ENTHUSIASTIC! Stay ENERGETIC! Stay CREATIVE! And don't fall into the pathetic mental/moral ditch in which your average Can't student resides! You guys are WAY better than that!

Does anyone know when we might get a peak at the new designs?

That's what I was thinking. I believe he may be the only MAC coach with a vote in the coaches' poll, right? Well, he didn't give Akron a single vote! So I don't know what he's talking about! Him not voting for us obviously doesn't help our cause. But it hurts the entire MAC as well! Screw Miami!
