Are we down 2-0?
-
I may have to suspend my betting theory this week. I expected a lower line also.First of all, put it all on the Zips. Then you won't have to worry about having any cash the rest of the season. These games have a tendency to be close if not really competetive. Akron looks like they are playing well ...but...not really. This is a week Solich has to love. Hunker down and tell his team its a must win. Go out and bust them in the chops. There's no "supposedly" to the injury problem in Athens. First of all, the entire defensive line graduated last year. Every starter from this year's line is now out with injuries - three with season-ending knee injuries. One linebacker (leading tackler) has leg issues and is only 50%. Starting corner has a broken shoulder. To increase our odds of winning I recommend attacking their corner with the broken shoulder.

Glad to see the rifle results posted in the "general discussion" forum instead of the "other sports" forum. Finally, some recognition that this type of competition while dangerous is not a sport. The linked photo gives some indication why we got our asses waxed by OSU again. Apparently some of the UA contestants are holding their weapon side saddle. http://gozips.com/sports/rifle/2011-12/rel.../20111017akrv6n

Second round of conference expansion is beginning.

You aren't making stuff up again are you? Only three teams in the Horizon have varsity football and two of them play in the Pioneer League. -

You may have me on a technicality since you didn't say football attendance increased, but assuming you meant football attendance Dayton might not be the best example to use; they averaged 3,286 per home game in 2010. I believe it may have been a tad higher in a few of the previous years but nothing to write home about. http://www.ncaa.org/wps/wcm/connect/d47a56...88ffc9080650d5b -
I started this with the intent of tracking Akron's offers and commitments. We weren't really getting any commitments, so I decided to also track who our offers were choosing over us, and to see who we are attempting to recruit against. Ianello seems to always shoot for the sky early, then progressively offer lower and lower rated recruits when the top ones don't work out. The problem with this approach is that by the time you get to the recruits that would help us at least compete in the MAC, other MAC schools have had months to develop relationships because they didn't spend 70% of their recruiting budgets chasing players with 20 BCS offers. So then we end up with players with no offers that we hope-to-God were just overlooked by every single other D-I school, and weren't offerless for some other, more harmful reason. That's how it played out last year, and it's how things are playing out this year too. I'll be sure to report any verbals that the Zips get, though. Assuming we ever get one. Since we have a coach with a reputation as a great recruiter, the verbals should start pouring in at any second.

I believe having the AK-Rowdies placed behind the John Jay shooters and harassing them was instrumental in our big win. My favorite chant was the "You ain't purty, and your barrel is dirty." I think the Rowdies could have a similar impact on our golf matches. I thought their student supporters (The Bloodhound Gang) had a nice one going there as well: "Central Park’s a mile away From our College, it’s John Jay You cannot foil or bust us He was the first Chief Justice!" I agree. It's always good when you can incorporate a geography lesson and a history lesson into a spirited sporting event chant.

He probably only chose them because of their uniforms.

Most in Akron. All of them in Ohio except for a few in Ypsilanti. Another possible response: most on football fields, a few at his girlfriend's house.

Just watched the flick "Unthinkable" again and (re)learned that the terrorist in the movie named Younger is from Akron. He is very dedicated, reminds me of Zach.

4. attendance is up 19% over last year Yes, I knew there was a four. If attendance keeps increasing at this pace there will be more people playing the games than watching them.
-
Points of progress. 1. Upon winning a coin toss this season we have not elected to kick off. 2. Few of our coaches still carry their papers inside their pants. 3. We are now scheduling more beatable FCS teams. 4. There must be a four, I just can't come up with it.

You want icoach to match his scheme to our talent? Someone should duct tape his eyes open and tie him to a chair in front of a screen showing "We are Marshall" for about 72 straight hours.

Any player who is willing to admit that they would base their program selection, even a little bit, based on uniforms should be dropped from consideration at once. Luckily that doesn't seem to be an issue with the current recruiting class (all 3 or 4 of them). And you would be losing a lot of players interest. This isnt 1965, players care what they look like on the field. Whether you like that or not doesn't matter, that is the reality. Dont kid yourself one bit, that is a very big deal to players. I agree that it is not 1965.
-
They lose nothing now if no one goes to the games. As long as they can average 14.5K in paid attendance now the problem will be in the future. Are they allegedly averaging 14.5K now? You betcha.
-
I smell a wager. I'll give you $10 for every game the Zips score over 100 this season; you give me $1.50 for every game that they don't.

The catholic conference idea is tremendous. I think they should call the new league the Great Midwest Conference. Re the A10... Would it really GUT a 16 team conference to lose 2 teams? -
Akron could increase its odds of attracting a big time opponent to the jar by keeping track of the big time programs that sign local talent. Occasionally such a team will schedule a school from the area the player came from to give the kid a chance to play in front of his old fans. Not saying this strategy will work a lot, but it sometimes happens. Of course if the Zips beat a big time school in the jar, rest assured it is unlikely to happen twice because nobody else will agree to show up.

Speaking of famous quotes, I recall one about where good guys finish. Not that it applies here.

Actually it will be Miami weather on Saturday. 75 and Sunny. That's a tad nippy for Miami. I think the Zips will win by 14, but I will give the points when I communicate with Al the Book.

So would the betting public. We came within 1/2 point of covering the spread so at least it was a moral victory. Where did you place your bet Fan? I locked in at 8 1/2. It's all you can eat flapjacks at the Waffle House for me and the Mrs. this morning. Go Zips.
