We are about ready for 2014. Key for the O will be to get Tommy Brown eligible and playing before Penn State. If this happens we may shock the world. Good luck Zips fans, we are about to turn it up a notch.
-
Sorry to hear about Kevin Mills. I thought he was a future starter on the O line.
-
Marshall became stronger after dismissing this guy. They have two 3* running backs behind him on the depth chart. Looking forward to this game.
-
3* true freshman Baggett may find himself on the two deep at safety if Robinson is gone

Does anyone else see the folly that the USFL is being used as an example of how this Spring plan would work? Did it work for the USFL (ah -no)? Not one person I've talked to is interested in this switch. I smell money for a select few in this situation (greed) corrupting this conversation. There's plenty to watch and do in the Spring and Summer without having a minor league college football conference playing on TV.

Ah yes - the dark ages, how could I have forgot

Frye wore #5, but this looks like him. Who is the this mystery Zips QB (I'm sure it's obvious but...) ?
-
I like the 2014 Z. It's positioned better than last year's Z and the white option will look nice (to recruits I hope). Zippy on the A-roo logo looked like a deer to me, although the donkey comment is applicable (and made me laugh). I think Zippy is great and all, but just not on our helmets.

The 2015 Football Commitment List
UA1987 replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
One of the most impressive recruiting videos I've seen. We'll need him on the defensive line. It would be nice if he could start to take classes in January 2015 and attend Spring workouts. -
#30 Kevin Grant 2.0?

What worries me most now is our special teams play, our defensive backfield and the band (kidding!). I believe Robinson may be gone at safety due to the hamburger night name calling session. Not sure how to rate each player (not kickers or returners as that is easy) on coverage and receiving teams, but I always liked the play of Rossi there. I know he is a Senior, but if his time is limited on defense, I'd like to see him be the special teams captain and spur on some of these young guys to make an improvement in tackling covereage and receiving blocking. We did improve on special teams last year, but I think we should get better yet and make it a goal to win a game and break one wide open with these squads in 2014.

Very interesting and big news (unless you're goofing on last year). Last I heard in June, we could expect no blue shirts in 2014. Now if Gauthney shows up at Fall camp to shore up the DT position we are looking failry good in the trenches.
-
How about this starting offensive line: LT Boyett 6'7" 315 LG Brumbaugh 6'5" 315 C Swtizer 6'2" 296 RG McNamara 6'1" 312 RT Brittnum 6'4" 316 Some very good players in the 2 deep and some very good reserves.
-
Would Zipsnation be happy with this two deep on the defensive line?: 1's DE Pittman 6'3" 269 DT Hollis 6' 1" 295 DT Grice 5'11" 283 DE Capi 6'3" 249 2's DE Horner 6'3" 217 DT Clark 6' 4" 275 DT Boxen 6'2" 250 DE Okafor 6'6" 230 Reserves - Bullard, Allen, Copeland, Davis, Garrett, Martin, Spruill (I see no one else on the current roster)
-
I know there may be a surprise or two this Fall camp, but after the loss of all of those 5th year and Senior lineman last year, it seems to me that we need a starter out of Boyette at left or right tackle and contributions from Boxen and Clark on the DL right away. Some of you may remember Almondo Sewell. He played on the DL as a True Freshman (3* recruit) I believe and did very well. If all three of these players solidify our lines, I think 2014 will be better (win loss) than 2013, given our schedule.
-
Does anyone think Brock Boxen will play (two deep or reserve) as a true freshman in 2014? I think he has a good shot assuming no paperwork or qualifying probs. Could spell a starter at either DT or DE depending on how he arrives (weight) and plays this August.

A Look Back at the 2005 Motor City Bowl
UA1987 replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
Not sure why we have never signed Memphis up to a 2 game series (one there one here) after that bowl game. Maybe the time is right now. -
Thanks for the read. The picture was from the Michigan game I believe as Terry is caught mid stroke in a signal that he must have got from the Master Bait and tackle shop in Bonita Springs, Florida. I was watching him call in the play on TV last Fall and couldn't believe what I saw. The announcers picked up on it but just laughed. Michigan, however, wasn't laughing much in this one in the 4th quarter. Love the good press on the Zips and after seeing that tool from Penn State in Zach's post, I'm really looking forward to that contest. Go get-em Terry and the mighty Zips!

I remember - 2009 the first year the stadium opened. Ugh, face plant

I like Frank and I think he has done a great job, but his pacing on the sideline always reminds me of Tim Conway's oldest man character. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOwmSbD20aQ

I really hope only a few die hard Zips fans are reading this or else Zipsnation might look silly. The quality of players in the Big Ten is extremely high. What has brought the prestige down is the drop in Michigan's elite status caused by a coaching carousel resulting from an embarrassing loss to Appy State. Yep, that one thing crippled Michigan (and we almost broke their other leg), but they will return. Penn State, of course, is the Sandusky fiasco. Those two things have hurt the Big Ten in a big way, However, Northwestern is on the rise despite their record last year. Wisconsin, Michigan State, Nebraska, Iowa, and Minnesota are tough. Purdue and Indiana seem to always struggle, but this happens in a conference. To say the Big Ten is a crappy league coming from a MAC forum sounds silly at best. Not as elite as it used to be due to perennial powerhouse struggles - OK, but only temporarily. No mention of the Buckeye's on purpose as we all seem to have little brother syndrome. One thing we can agree on is the Akron/Toledo game last year was a fine football game. Now let's get some more blue shirts for 2014 damn it!
-
If this is not a done deal get Faust on the phone with Jason Taylor and have him give this guy a call, unless that's a recruiting violation. This DE could really help. Now a big DT to replace McCray and another big OT and we're ready. A lockdown CB, a slammin S, and an outstanding WR wouldn't hurt either if they are out there, but that might be too much to ask for.

Dambrot Answers Some Questions - Including One on Abreu
UA1987 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I would take him back too, but on a condition that a trusted (approved both by the University and Abreu) counselor has daily contact with him, with all compliance issues wrapped up, to guide him along. Once off the track it takes a while before the rails tighten up and it could be that Alex will need help till he ages. For now, the best thing for him is to play ball and learn. He should play with humility and not speak on behalf of the Zips, with the media, untill the the season is over and all went well, -
He needs us and we'll need him next year. I hope it works out. Risky, but until we can recruit a guy that is going to be our feature back in the future years, we need to fill up our roster with players to try. They all have something to give and it can happen that an athlete learns what he needs to do to be the one. If we win enough this year, and go to a bowl, I believe our feature back with big play potential will be sucessfully recruited for 2015, but he'll most likely not be ready to play as true freshman.
