http://www.deseretnews.com/article/388845/...UST.html?pg=all Pretty sure Gerry and Tom coached that game as their records include the result. Our new AD back then, Bobinski (sounds like a clown name), fired Faust at the end of the 1994 season after Gerry recommended him for the job. They knew each other from Notre Dame. Almost went to the 1994 Ohio game with an Acme paper grocery bag (eyes cut out) over my head ala old-time New Orleans NFL fans, but I had something more important to do like unclog a drain. Anyhow, the earlier 1994 Miami blowout of the Zips seemed to be the final nail in Faust's coffin. I say, win this one for Gerry and the fans (those diehards that are left - most of whom are on Zipsnation).

Maybe Notre Dame was on the tube. Anyhow, ole Gerry did hit the record books in a game against Ohio. It was 1994 and the first ever game in Div IA when two 0-10 teams met on the gridiron. Akron won and it was at the Rubber Bowl. Ohio's HC used to be an assistant for Faust and, of course, they were friends. Never thought I'd be looking back at the Faust years with admiration, but he did have a good year or two, however, they always seemed like they should have been better. Even his 7-3-1 team in 1992 should have gone 9-2. Anyhow, I liked the guy. I was at the 2005 Motor City Bowl and he stopped climbing some stairs and smiled and waived at me and my son after I whispered maybe a little too loudly 'hey there goes Gerry Faust'.

Never really left, just went underground. 26 year follower of Zips Division IA (FBS) football.

I can't sign on with such an extreme position with this head coach. The previous one yes, but not this one. I'm actually getting a little enjoyment out of watching this team again after mothballing my Zips caps and gear for 2010 and 2011 due to embarrasment. I can understand the frustration for those 'bottom line' 'end of the day' types, but as long as things are struggling to go right and I see some light, I'm back and will be watching with great anticipation for a win over the Redhawks who I can't stand almost as much (maybe more this week) as Kommunist State University.

Originally, I believe this thread was supposed to be about Jeff, not Terry Bowden. Jeff was the OC at Florida State during the end of Bobby's tenue and it did not work out very well there, to say the least. I think some are wondering about him in the same way here at Akron as his special teams have been troubled. You could say, however, that it is the depth on this football team that is causing our special teams to play below standard. Freshman mistakes and athletes playing out of position do cause trouble. Keep an eye on Jeff, but give him a chance. If any Bowden is on the hot seat, however, it is him.

Akron is rising and Miami is falling. An injury report might help in discussing the outcome, but I like our chances. Miami has had a tough early schedule, like the Zips. Akron is the last of three in row as part of their mid-schedule that I would guess they had penciled in as W's. I'd like to think that they made a mistake inviting us to their homecoming celebration as we would like to help them obtain the distinction of going 0-12 in 13, while we cure a road win famine. I wonder if Gerry will be watching?

It was long ago and I've put it in a distant memory box, but every time we play Miami U I'm reminded of the 1994 and 1995 games when the late Miami HC, Randy Walker, was shopping himself for a bigger job and he hammered the already down Zips with 50-0 halftime scores in both years. Walker ultimately went to Northwestern and Faust was fired after the 1994 year, never to coach again. I'd like to think it would be fitting if Akron could look back at this Saturday's game as when Zips football turned it around in a karmic payback at the expense of the Redhawks.

Agree with all of your post. The season now hinges on the Can't game and picking up a win or two elsewhere starting in Oxford this coming weekend.
-
We miss James for sure, but I've been waiting for the right time to say something good about Albert Presley. He's been very fast off the edge and now he has a chance to take back his starting position and maybe get noticed by a scout or two.

A depth chart overhaul I don't agree with, but Akron has to address the 12 penalties, over half them unsportsmanlike personal fouls, commited last Saturday. I saw McCray and Hollis on consecutive plays get flagged for 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Ohio went into score a touchdown right after the Hollis penalty. These players need to know that they are affecting their chances of playing as a professional with these fouls and they need to know they are robbing the rest of the team of a chance to win. This selfish play should land them some time on the bench at NIU. If any player feels he is so important that he can do this to the rest of the team, it may hit home when playing time (and stats that go with it) is taken away. I say give the few Seniors or upperclassmen that have stayed with the team a little playing time at NIU, if you can fit them into the positions where players have commited unsportsmanlike penalties. Maybe something like this will teach everyone on the team not to retaliate if you are frustrated, but just get your revenge on the next play by mauling someone or making a play within the rules of the game.

LZip, I recommend you just put this gp1 on ignore - worse than a troll

Agreed. Terry may want to help Jeff out on special teams as Jeff is failing miserably. More emphasis on return teams in practice is a glaring need.

Watched on ESPN3. Akron had players smiling on the bench as the team was being embarrassed. This plus the numerous personal fouls tells me too many are playing for personal gain and to hell with the team. OK, so be it. I'm fine, but Akron football is reeling from a knockout tonight. We may need to bench some of our dirty dozen, among others, until they remember what it takes. I'd start players like Petrides and Conner Seeman in our next game.

Ohio has 18 on their injured list and Akron has 1, which helps to equal out a lost recruiting class under 'I'diot here in 2011-12. OU emphasizes it's running game which should help cut down the big plays our defense gives up. If our QB's are healthy enough to execute, this may be our week.
-
18 on the list for Ohio. Confirms OUdude's comments.

Interesting about your O-line. Our front seven on defense have played very well, but our defense as a whole gives up on average 30 points per game. Our defensive backfield has been playing 'man' coverage and have made some spectacular plays, but about 8 plays a game someone on the defense misses a tackle or an assignment and our opponent goes for big yardage. Should be an exciting game. Here's hoping our QB's are 100% for this one.

We had 6 sacks in the first half and were moving the ball at will. Then, Pohl takes a head shot late in the second quarter and BG adjusts and moves the pocket right and left. Pohl showed a lot of guts by playing in the second half, but it was not enough. BG was able to convert on several long third down plays after the break with their roll out adjustment and we could not make the change to cover it, as we had to defend their strong running game. Difficult game to watch as you could see it slipping away. It's tough to be a Zips fan with all of the losses, but I can see a lot of good things right now. We are not heading into the abyss, we are pulling ourselves out of it and we will make it to the ridge sometime this year.
-
Akron views a pre-game inspirational video of the annoying insulting BG student that sat behind me at last year's game. The outdated uninformed just plain stupid comments made last year in our house spur the Zips on this Saturday to smash a pumpkin at Doyt Perry. Akron 27, BG 21.
-
I hope Jeff Bowden is concerned about his punt team after watching the Indiana/BG game. We keep getting beat on special teams and It's time that changes.

Last year, Akron was ahead 10-0 at the end of the second quarter on a beautiful sunny Saturday. Then, Caponi went down and out of the game right before the half. BG decided at the break to use their big talented offensive line to run the ball right at us with our best D lineman out and not much depth in reserve. They kept the ball away from our offense and went on a 24-0 run in the second half. Easy adjustment for BG. This will not happen again this year. This game looks to be exciting for the fans with turnovers, big plays, and special teams playing a big part in what will determine the outcome. I think this game could also be determined by a gutsy coach call or two. When Terry's dad, Bobby Bowden, was at West Virginia and Florida State, he was known for going 'all in' in big games. Let's see who's the strategic gambler in this one.
-
Akron did seem to be going through the motions early, even as early as pre-game warm-ups. Louisiana was going through pre-game with emotion and some of our team seemed to be doing stretches halfway, with too much milling around and not enough of a sense of urgency, despite one of our coaches blowing his whistle like Sergeant Carter. As a result, I was concerned with 45 minutes to go before the game start. Still, all in all, it was a great game to watch. As all of you know that went to the Info, the game turned on the late disguised gambling on-side kick by the Cajuns. I do think you have to hang this partly on our special teams coaches, unless, unknown to me, they alerted our receiving team to be aware prior to the kick (Cajun coaches must have spotted on film that the front line on our kick receiving team was retreating to block without watching for a squib kick). A bit of a downer to wake up with an L in a game that was close, but we are way ahead where we were in 2010 and 2011, so I expect Coach Bowden and this team to give the ZipsNation more reasons to believe in the next two months.

Akron 28 LA 27. Rain, but not on the Zips parade.
-
I believe Milwee is responsible for the overall offensive game plan. Milwee calls the script and survey's the field from the box, but Terry can and does overrule depending on the defensive set or feel of the game. Terry signaling in the plays allows for quick changes and keeps the offense confident that their HC, with tons of experience, is in charge and guiding them.
-
Bring the old gals to the game this Saturday, maybe Terry B will make a crazy gesture for them on a play call. If you didn't see it in the big house it was a classic STROKE of genius. Some comedian could have a field day with a similar assortment of play calls from the sideline (tried to find a pic of Terry but no luck - it was on BTN).

I was on campus today and I ran into the team at about noon. They are pretty upbeat and high energy. No fans in the ticket office, however. Talk from people that have been on campus for a while is this game reminded some of Akron vs Wisconsin in 2003. Yep, some of you remember. Anyhow, talk it up and sell the Ragin Cajun game Zipsnation everywhere you can this week... the stadium needs to roar as the Zips enter the field prior to the game on Saturday.
