Here are my Michigan game notes: 1) Akron's offensive line allowed no sacks - Grade B+ 2) Pohl should be promoted from LT to LT General - Grade A 3) Akron had zero fumbles, running game good - Grade B+ 4) Our receivers were in a zone - Grade A 5) All of Akron's defensive line two deep played great - Grade A 6) Linebackers were very very good - Grade A- 7) Secondary much improved - Grade B+ 8) Special teams were effective despite missed long field goals - Grade B 9) Coaching Staff - Grade A Spectacular game. I will be taking a red eye home at the end of this week just to see the Zips play the Ragin Cajun's this Saturday. Talked to some college age people about the new helmets and they love-em. Gumbo and some cold ones before the game this coming Saturday. Go Zips!

The Refs Cheated and the Zips Play Dirty? Or Sour Grapes?
UA1987 replied to K-Roo's topic in Akron Zips Football
You have no idea what was being said or done in the trenches so back away. Our left tackle is a Senior and no one has ever accused him of anything till you came on here with your complaints. It was a very good game with breaks and calls on both sides. JMU played their hearts out but Akron had the guts to come back from that horrible beginning to win. We'll take it and so will you. -
How Important is the JMU Game to the Terry Bowden Era?

The radio show information on the radio program was coming from a call to the douche Virgina reporter that covers your team while he was standing in your stadium. -

You may have zeroed in on our attendence problem. We need knockout Zips babes in outfits with big zippers on them. -
How Important is the JMU Game to the Terry Bowden Era?

Heard on Joe Dunn's show that James Madison could bring 5,000 fans. I don't believe this will happen (500 maybe), but they do draw well at home with @ 18,000 per game last year in their new 25,000 seat stadium. Will our student sections be well attended? Will the voice of Akron be heard or will there be more Dukes fans in the stadium that Zips fans? Will someone dress up like 'the Duke' and get sloppy drunk? How about a Dukkie Howser look alike? Will Duke of Earl be playing in lot 9 after the game? -

I agree your post was well done. Sounded like a Braveheart speech before battle, except you'd have a beer in hand instead of a sword. I will not walk away from such a call. Let the word be spread to all Zips Fans... this is a Must Win! Get Rowdy and loud! -
It may be that in the game last weekend, Chisholm was shutdown as this was part of UCF's defensive game plan. Take out the running game and put the pressure on the Sophomore QB to score in the air to test their defensive backfield. It worked. Hundley came in at the end of the 2nd quarter when they were preventing the long pass. The game was much different then and at end of the 3rd and in the 4th quarter. I look for James Madison to try and shut down Chisholm again and put the pressure back on Pohl to find the open man. Should be very interesting and fun to watch, but I suspect the Chisel will have more backers after this Saturday.

What - we went back to losing big? My game notes: 1) Akron's defensive line looked very good 2) Akron's linebacker play was poor - over pursuing - missed tackles 3) Defensive backfield was out of position too much and seemed not to know how to work around the targeting rule. Should the Zips look at Donte Williams more at corner as Lartey and Alexander did not play well? 4) Quick throws by UCF were very effective in taking away our pressure 5) Pohl telegraphed to his targeted receivers and looked more like a Lieutenant than a field General 6) Our receivers could not seperate from coverage 7) Special teams need more work lining up correctly and fielding punts 8) Our offensive line pass protected good Very disappointing opener, yes, but a lot of this can be fixed and some good things happened.

If I hear one word about Akron being smaller than UCF on ESPN3 then we know the game announcers did not even look at the rosters. We match up pretty good and are actually bigger than them on the offensive line. Their receivers are not giants either so that makes me more comfortable with our secondary. I think we may be in this one late and then anything can happen. Could be a screaming win or a difficult heart breaker. Either way, I say this one is closer than most people think and may depend on one of the old cliches: turnovers, special teams, or penalties.

No mention of McNamara moving into the first unit on the offensive line. I thought I saw him dressed but with shoulder pads off at practice last week. Not sure however. Last week alot of work was done on the short passing game, and stunting drills on the defense line. Things were looking good.
-
Went to the end of practice today and was almost not able to get in. I was stopped at the South gate and told it was a closed practice by what looked like a grad student that worked there. So, I went to the North gate and walked right in. Tempo Tempo Tempo - emphasis on reps (not in full gear). Linemen were back ready for the snap very quickly. Units were moved in and out (looked like ones and twos were mixed) just as quick. Players were exhausted and it showed. QB's hung out receivers and there were missed blocking assignments. Did not see Rachal or McCray in the late action, but they were dressed and looked used up. Rossi was hustling and making plays. The defensive backfield looked good. Ball handling drills at the end were not sharp enough. In the end, lots of work, but sloppy execution, which is what you would expect at this time.

Nice chest pounding. Do you play cards?

I agree. CBS's Sunday Morning just did a segment on this problem this past Sunday. I believe these type of overdoses are up 75% (160,000 in 2006 to 280,000 current). Suburban teens and young adults are being affected the most. http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-3445_162-57596...oked-on-heroin/

This takes some of the intrigue out of it JZ84. I was standing by the rail over by the gear shop at the South end taking in the last part of practice when I turned around to leave and the gate behind me, which was open, was now locked. I thought 'am I locked in the stadium?' I strolled over towards the North end half expecting to be asked 'what are you doing here' by security, but I just walked out. Reminded me of the old Rubber Bowl days when you could just walk in for free at halftime but you weren't sure if it was legal.
-
Better ask the ticket office. I was in business casual, which just happened to be blue and gold and I just walked by everyone nodding knowingly. Only two gates were open and there was loose security.

Went to a part of practice today and Rachal was with the ones (Grice and Caponi). So were Presley and Horner. McCray was run in for Caponi at times. Rossi, who almost picked off a Pohl pass in the backfield, was with the two's including the Colorado State transfers (very early - honor seems to be playing a part in the depth chart for now). Practice was 80% pass as they were not in full gear and timing needs to be developed. I did not notice what receivers were playing where as I was focusing on the defensive line and linebackers. The stadium looked great! You can't help but feel wealthy walking around campus as everything is so new and well landscaped like a country club. Amato seemed like he was having a good time. Players were hustling. Bowden's Southern drawl filled the field with encouraging words at the end of practice. Everything was first class.

UCFMike, We lost several key contributors from a 1-11 team (Griggs - D/E, our best CB - Commack, two linebackers - Mangum, our leading tackler and Gilmer, two starting offensive lineman, our TD record setting QB, and Suel our best receiver). You might want to spread the word around beautiful Orlando that your walk-on's will probably start the second half. Don't believe all the hype on this fan page about what Bowden is doing here. He and his staff are working hard and doing an great job, but UCF is way ahead of us. Yours truly, Maj. Reisman

I'll keep an eye on #59. Another reason I'm optomistic is because of the 4 key players lost on defense, only one was a lineman, while the 5 coming in to help on defense include 4 lineman. We now have a solid two deep rotation up front.
-
I agree the defense should be better. Just looking at the numbers, we lost 4 key players on the two deep and we pick up 5. Plus, the returning players have a year with Amato under their belt, which will HOPEFULLY stop coverage foul ups where an opponent's receiver lines up and has no one guarding him like we saw last year. There are many questions like will the transfers pan out, but I'm focusing on Rossi and Presley. Can Rossi take over that MIKE spot and will Presley get out of the dog house because of a poor off season and take over as one of the starting DE's.

Not exactly earth shattering news, but he does leave on hole on the third unit which should be filled by incoming Frosh Mike Kish for now. Fleming sure has had a tormented UA football career. As a tormented Zips fan I can relate and I hope he rips up the FCS.
-
Will Fleming transferring to Towson University. No confirmation yet.

There are two fan related demonstrations that I remember at the Rubber Bowl (too few I know). One was at the 1987 Can't State vs Akron game. There were 35,000 people at the game and The Wave went around the Bowl most of the contest. Second was the last game at the Rubber Bowl against Buffalo. Akron was on a goal line stand at the open end on the Bowl and the chant (as you mentioned) went out: Z-I from the West stands and then right after P-S from the East seats. It was loud, amazing, and it affected play on the field.

In addition to the benefits already mentioned by LZip, let me try to put a number on the projected attendance of this game. Let's say we schedule YSU out several years as it is hard to get schedules worked out in 1 year and the dark Ianello years are further behind us. People are actually considering attending an Akron game again and we are going to open the season with YSU. Let's say we put 15,000 in the stands for this game as they have a strong following. At $20 a ticket average between reserved and general admission and say half buy something to eat and or drink for $10. That's $375,000 for the game without considering other forms of revenue. Not bad for an opener especially considering we'd draw 5,000 if we played Morgan State instead.
-
Most Football Bowl Subdivision (old Division IA) programs would not play at Akron without expecting a return game at their place. A new FBS team like Georgia State might, but again this pool of teams is shallow.
-
Why? This thread was talking about 2 for 1's which can cause a home game hole in your schedule where you would need a 1 and done home game. This would mean scheduling a FCS team. This thread was also talking about ATM games and the pro and cons. If you pass on the ATM game then you rely more on home attendance. Morgan St. type teams do not putt enough people into the seats and there is no connection with Akron. If YSU would do it, I'd book them for an Akron home opener (no away return - not allowed by MAC rules anyhow ) every other year. If they would wise up (Tressel could explain to the right people) they would accept as they covet MAC affiliation and playing this game would be a move in the right direction for them.
