  1. I really didn't want to say it either. I'm still a Meves fan, too, but we've seen numerous miscues even going back to last season. Nobody's perfect, but wow, some of those errors could have been extremely costly if not for Barson and others. Of course, that's what makes a team...players working together and covering for each other when necessary. So, my concern also is changing the team dynamic if we start substituting GKs.
  2. Well, it's over, and Louiserville won 1-0; so, you can stop arguing about it.
  3. I'm sorry for McAdams, but Ponikvar should be Meves' 1st backup. Poni did an outstanding job last season filling in for Meves when David was fouled and taken out at Northern Illinois. Our back line let a number of balls through that Poni had to save. I'm confident in his ability to step in again if needed. The bigger question..."Is Meves the best we have?" He's committed several errors this year that could easily have proven costly...most memorable was the inability to clear early on against New Mexico with Barson saving us again by kicking the ball out just before Sandoval reached it. Does Meves get too much credit given our back line play?
  4. Spencer likely to stick with hot hand against QuakesPortland coach feels Nagbe has earned another start up top vs. SJ
  5. Whatever system ends up being employed, I'm just thankful that we have the MOST AWESOME HEAD COACH who knows how to adjust the system to the players' talents.
  6. It was great that the Portland/New England game was on Fox Soccer Channel following the Zips/Lobos on Friday night. "The University of Akron" got a lot of shout outs from the announcers in addition to Darlington. Rarely did they mention Nagbe without mentioning The University of Akron.Go Zips!
  7. Good "out of the box" thinking. If UA is stuck with the Head Coach because we can't afford to buy him out, what can be done? Can UA get rid of assistant coaches and bring in new ones? And, in doing so, can the Athletic Director force changes to the game plans...i.e., run some other offense rather than a pro-style offense? Could the AD bring in a different assistant to be in charge of recruiting? Although not ideal, is it possible to make changes to the Football Program without changing the Head Coach?
  8. Dreamworld. No way that anyone just walks away from a $350,000/year contract with $1,050,000 still on the table after this season.
  9. Sorry...I did post that, but decided to delete since I didn't actually see it. My source is reliable, but without having seen it myself, I decided I shouldn't have posted.
  10. There was only one player involved in any "altercation", and it was the out-of-control Darren Mattocks who needs to have his chill pill allocation upped. He'll do well to sit out the next game and learn from this experience. There was a (minor) collision with the keeper, who reached out to hold Darren up. Keith Tabatznik on the broadcast got it exactly right -- Mattocks took two separate swings at opponents. Frankly, he's fortunate if he only sits one game. Very immature. Is there any post-game review by the MAC or anyone?I agree Z.I.P. I re-watched on my DVR today, and Darren was the one swinging. He should have walked away immediately.
  11. I agree. I'm concerned that Darren is playing for himself more than team. Caleb said, in his post-game IMG interview, that Darren apologized to his teammates in the locker room. I hope he truly learned from this experience. He's a good player, who could be great, if he gets his mind more focused on "team". BTW, I think Luke Holmes only has 2 more games to sit, and then we'll have an additional guy to go to up front.
  12. The Rowdies just posted a pump up video for the game tomorrow night. At the very end is Caldwell's goal and Zarek rushing the field. Too funny! Thanks. Outstanding show of support by Zarek!
  13. Thanks. Great read. I knew some of it but not all. Love the Zips, Love the atmosphere. Zips Mens Soccer games have become the greatest events in all of sports for me.
  14. I think the story of how the AK-Rowdies came to be so involved at the Mens Soccer matches would be a good one. From what I remember reading, the story of showing up at Virgina Tech 2 years ago and the players' reaction to the surprise appearance by the Rowdies might be good. One of my favorite memories was in 2009 at Michigan when a group of 15-20 AK-Rowdies (perhaps not even that many) were louder than the 600 Wolverine fans in attendance. It was the first time in the Akron-Michigan series that the visiting team won (5-1 Zips).
  15. Thanks for that account, Z.I.P., and the pictures.

  20. AWESOME 4-0 WIN! GO ZIPS!
  21. Bunbury flexes his muscle in romp over DynamoKANSAS CITY, Kan. – It’s taken most of five months for Teal Bunbury to round into form, but Sporting Kansas City are finally starting to see the best of their effervescent striker.Bunbury had no problem separating himself from the Houston defense Saturday afternoon at Livestrong Sporting Park, bursting onto two brilliant balls from Graham Zusi and Julio Cesar to drop his second brace of the season and propel Kansas City to a 3-0 victory. His seven goals so far are two more than he scored as a rookie, an improvement that is unlikely to stop any time soon while Bunbury and Sporting look to build towards the best record in the Eastern Conference.“When [Teal] is as physical as he was and finds himself teetering on that last line, he puts a lot of fear in a lot of teams,” manager Peter Vermes said. “He’s very direct, can go to goal and really has breakaway speed. When he gets around the goal, I think he can be deadly.”Deadly only begins to describe Bunbury’s performance against the Dynamo. He scored on two of his three shots and was clinical with both feet, claiming the game’s opening goal in the ninth minute by stabbing the ball past Tally Hall with his right foot. Then he added a second with a well-placed strike with his left 35 minutes into the second half. But aside from his efficiency in front of net, Houston simply had no answer for Bunbury’s pace and the service originating from deep areas that sprung him.“They were great balls in [to me],” Bunbury said. “I feel like I was just trying to be more aware, trying to make more runs. I know if I’m one on one with a guy, it’s my job to try to get in behind, get on the ball and finish.”Bunbury finished both plays with aplomb, but the balls played into him were equally brilliant.Julio Cesar’s driven half-volley into space to set up Bunbury’s second could be partially attributed to good fortune, but there was nothing lucky about the pass Zusi curled behind Andre Hainault to set up his teammate for the match opener.Zusi picked the ball up off the Sporting back line, drove toward the touchline and whipped a ball into the central channel for Bunbury without even picking up his head.“That’s something we discuss quite a bit, just the no-look ball in behind the defense,” Zusi said. “It’s very unexpected for them. We always try to have one of our forwards peeling off to get in behind them. It worked out pretty well today.”In fact, just about everything worked out well for Kansas City and Bunbury on Saturday. “I’m feeling good,” Bunbury said. “I’m having fun with it. You have to have fun and enjoyment. Credit to my teammates and coaches sticking by me. It’s just great to get wins. I love winning.”And Vermes can’t help but love what he’s seeing from his promising young forward, even if Bunbury is still only scratching the surface of his potential. “I don’t think we’ve seen his best yet,” Vermes said. “I really don’t.”
  22. It's awesome that Matt is getting playing time and scored! Go Zips!
  23. Are you talking about the football that is played in First Energy Stadium, Cub Cadet Field? BTW, you should correct your spelling...I believe it's Louiserville.
  24. That was the point...it's not on their schedule because, for them, it's an exhibition. It's on the Zips' schedule because it's real. (This is the same situation as the Millikin game last season.)
  25. No doubt that Zakuani should have won the Hermann. The Zips just didn't get enough credit at the time. I think we were still considered to be in a weak conference (still true) without much regard to our out-of-conference schedule. The Sounders taking Steve #1, followed by the Zips' outstanding performance in 2009 finally got everyone on board that Akron Soccer is the real deal.Where others fault the writers for not checking facts, I credit them for recognizing Zakuani was the true best mens' collegiate soccer player in 2008. (In fact, who won the Hermann for 2008? I don't remember.)
