  2. Our run was similar to that of Pitt thus far. Won 1st round game. Defeated #16 seed Syracuse then #1 seed Wake Forest. However, Zips had to travel to Stanford whereas Pitt will host their Elite 8 match.
  3. No apology needed. Your “prognostication” was correct. At least 1 unseeded team will make the College Cup.
  4. Link to the Fox8 story on DeAndre, Richie, Zips Mens Soccer https://fox8.com/sports/just-thrilled-2-former-akron-zips-are-representing-at-world-cup/
  5. Upsets in Round 3 #1 Kentucky 1 - 2 Unseeded Pitt #5 Stanford 1 (1) - 1 (3) #12 UNCG advances on PKs #15 Tulsa 1 - 2 Unseeded Creighton Elite 8 matchups Portland at Pittsburgh Vermont at #3 Syracuse Creighton at #7 Duke #13 Indiana at #12 UNCG #1 Kentucky eliminated in Round 3 #2 Washington, #4 Virginia eliminated in Round 2
  6. Unseeded Pitt, down a man due to a red card, scores 2nd goal, defeats #1 Kentucky and will host unseeded Portland. At least 1 unseeded team will get to the College Cup similar to the unseeded Zips in 2018.
  7. How do you figure 2 unseeded into the College Cup? Vermont took down SMU in the Round of 32. UCLA had to then travel to Vermont where the Catamounts whipped them 3-0. in the Sweet 16. Now Vermont faces #3 Syracuse in the Elite 8...winner advances to the College Cup. Portland has to face the winner or #1 Kentucky v unseeded Pitt. Only if Pitt wins will there definitely be an unseeded team from this quadrant into the College Cup.

  9. So thankful for our Zips Mens Soccer program, Coach Embick and his staff, our current players and their families. Thankful for our Zips Mens Soccer alumni and their families and all of the friends and fans of our program. I have met some awesome people and have made some great friendships thanks to our program. This World Cup occurring over the Thanksgiving holiday season has been so much fun. Love watching DeAndre in his 2nd WC and Richie in his first. So much fun to see pictures of Ira and Dylan Yedlin and DeAndre’s fiancée, Crystal, on her IG account attending the match v Wales. Happy to see the pictures and video Reggie Laryea posted from Qatar on his IG account. Canada was the better team v Belgium; unfortunately, the score didn’t reflect that. I’m so much looking forward to the remaining US and Canada matches. And, of course, enjoying as much of this World Cup as I can. Greatest sporting event in the World. 2026 in North America will be awesome!!! Thanks former Zips Head Coach Caleb Porter and current Head Coach Jared Embick and their players for giving me my appreciation and love for the beautiful game. Thanks Coach Stu Parry (and your family) for starting and nurturing our program and continuing to support it so well. Thank you to all former and future Zips Mens Soccer players and coaches. Can’t wait for 2023 with so many outstanding returning players and talented recruits. See you all for the Spring exhibitions. GO ZIPS!!!

  12. If anyone wants an actual Zips connection, watch around the 11:23 mark to see Abdi Mohammed and Marco Micaletto among the Crew2 winning the inagural MLSNEXTPRO Cup. Another great piece starts around the 40 minute mark highlighting the beautiful game around the world and in Cleveland.
  13. Agreed. Referee Nicholas Balcer should absolutely be reprimanded / suspended.
  14. Upsets in Round 2 #2 Washington 1 - 3 Creighton #4 Virginia 1 (3) - 1 (5) Marshall advances on PKs #6 Clemson 1 - 2 UCLA #8 Oregon State 0 - 2 Portland #9 Lipscomb 0 - 1 Western Michigan #11 SMU 2 - 3 Vermont #16 Akron 0 - 3 Pitt

  16. Unseeded UCLA upset #6 Clemson and will travel to Unseeded Vermont who upset #11 SMU I love that UCLA has to travel to Burlington, Vermont.

  18. https://pittsburghsoccernow.com/2022/11/20/pitt-dominates-akron-3-0-to-return-to-the-sweet-16/ ...The Panthers also played a disciplined performance against the Zips, who continuously lost their cool and earned a number of yellow cards. An assistant coach and Zips head coach Jared Embick earned a red card as well after the game. 10 Zips players also received yellow cards throughout the match. Noel said that the Panthers prepared well for the match and played in control, whereas Akron played in the complete opposite manner. “As soon as the ref blows the whistle, it’s just a matter of getting back behind the ball and just stick to the next action,” Noel said. “Just be ready for the next one. I really felt like our group was ready and controlled the game compared to Akron, who were more aggressive and more stressed and making a lot of fouls. We just tried to stay calm and resilient and it worked out.”...
  19. Sometimes it’s difficult to recover mentality after such a p poor call early in the game. I’d say the NCAA should look into suspending that ref for that call (basically not understanding the game), but apparently they have a shortage of knowledgeable referees.

  21. Article from July 2014 http://americansoccernow.com/articles/deandre-yedlin-s-rapid-rise-through-the-u-s-ranks Yedlin was timed in the 40-yard dash at Akron and “was running about a 4.2 or 4.3,” said Jared Embick, who replaced Porter as Akron’s head coach. “People talk about NFL guys running 4.2, 4.3. DeAndre has that kind of pace. But it’s not just that he’s fast, he’s strong, he runs strong, and that makes him able to run through contact, fight off tackles.” Like most elite youth players, Yedlin was an attacking player for most of his club soccer days. Porter spotted him when he was assisting at a U.S. Under-18 national team camp and afterward sent Embick to recruit him. After Yedlin committed to Akron he was converted to right back to best utilize his pace and strength. As I recall, from talking with DeAndre's grandparents, it was the Zips then Head Coach Caleb Porter who suggested DeAndre make the switch to right back. ... some US Youth national team scout. lol
