  1. He's got to be pretty high up there in the "best football name" category.
  2. Forgot about the Lockview. Insomnia Cookies is another one. It's like a Jimmy John's for cookies that's open in the middle of the night. They're not exactly local or unique, but they add to the college town feel that's developed in the area between downtown and campus.
  3. YSU won't schedule us without us giving them a return trip. You can forget about that.
  4. The Sun Bar and Grille is gone, EuroGyro was rebuilt into something pretty awesome, and Aroma/Manny's moved to a new building. As far as food/culture goes, since the university had spread out it now shares many things with downtown. The Diamond Deli is a place where UA students frequent now. Mr. Zub's in Highland Square is another place like that. if you're sticking to things immediatly adjacent to campus, your options will be limited. Everything around Downtown Akron is fair game now.
  5. And now he's committed! Way to go!
  6. Blurb from the Pittsburgh Tribune. Too bad they don't know our coach's name.
  7. 6'2" 250lb DL Brock Boxen from Beaver Falls HS in Pennsylvania has committed to play for the Zips. 247Sports profile Rivals profile Scout profile Chose Akron over offers from Pitt, Maryland, and UConn.
  8. UA gets $1,000,000 grant to study how glass works
  9. First, they're the Sun Belt champions. That puts them behind at least four MAC teams (NIU, Toledo, Can't, and Ball State) on our schedule in terms of being a good football team. James Madison is more interesting to me (partially because they might be in the MAC in a few years, partially because they might be better than Lafayette). I've sat through every home game the past five years. If it was about watching good football, I would have quit long ago. I'm there to support my university and its athletic programs. What does playing Lafayette do for the Zips? Nothing. Nobody cares if we win, nobody cares if we lose. It doesn't help recruiting either way and TV stations aren't interested in carrying it.
  10. Then why in the world are we playing each other?
  11. Pitt is interesting, but I couldn't care less about Iowa State. I don't care if they're BCS or whatever. The problem is that you can't find two 1-for-1 teams to play every season. The lower level teams won't do it because they'd rather take a beating for a paycheck and the better teams won't come here because they can find another team to pay for a home game without a return trip.
  12. But is that team interesting? The answer is no.
  13. Can you name a single interesting opponent that would do a 1-for-1 with us?
  14. Yes, James Price is missing. Don't know if he'll ever be back. Even without him, our D-line has improved vastly compared to last season both in talent and in depth.
  15. http://gozips.com/sports/fball/2013-14/roster?sort=year Must have been waiting on signing Fransohn Bickley. All of the players announced on signing day are on the roster, including JUCO players CJ Mizell and Keontae Hollis, which is great news. The only one missing is Anthony Lauro, who we know will be greyshirting this year. In addition, late signee DL Darius Copeland and walk-on LB Andrew Hauser are there. Moses McCray is on the roster, but I don't see any of the other possible transfers yet. Some previously unknown additions to the roster are freshmen DL Robert Kensinger (Strongsville HS), OL Ryan Noland (Southeast HS), LB Granyl Smith (Gahanna Lincoln HS), DL Christopher Spruill (John Adams HS). Likely all walk-ons. We also have a transfer from D-II Mercyhurst University (Erie, PA): QB Matthew Hoyer, who originally went to St Ignatius. No sign of some of the later reported recruits, such as Dmitre Aaron, Johnnie Martin, or walk-on Brady Berger.
  16. I can confirm that Arlington McClinton has left the football team.
  17. That's the kind of attitude that needs to spread through all the high schools in Summit County.
  18. Sometimes that's all it takes.
  19. Looking more and more like this is the guy. Have to wait until the fall camp roster comes out.
  20. Class of 2013. Always good to see local talent stay here.
  21. An alternative possibility for the transfer from Pitt. We recruited him out of junior college. Might be able to play immediately, as a grad student.
  22. Zach D'Orazio, if healthy, is too dynamic a player to not start.
  23. Wasn't yesterday some kind of walk-on tryouts?
  24. Really hard to say because no position is safe.
  25. Same reason you draft a guy from Europe and never sign him. Keep him from playing for other teams.
