  1. Jim Tressel is a huge Buckeye homer, but we were considering him for the head job, where he would populate the staff (and the stands) with even more huge Buckeye homers. We need somebody on the sidelines that can create some excitement for Joe Akron. Somebody that you tell them about and they go "Oh yeah! I know who that is. How's he doing there?"
  2. Regardless of who the head coach ends up being, there are some people who I would love to see on the sidelines working with our players. I would want to see: QB Coach - Luke Getsy, current QB coach at D-II Indiana (PA) OL Coach - LeCharles Bentley, former NFL Pro-Bowl player, currently looking for a job after resigning from his radio show Anybody else have some names?
  3. http://www.d2messageboard.com/showthread.p...SU-parade-but... D-II message board on the Winters situation.
  4. Some good news: Princeton senior OLB Daryan Martin still verbally committed to Akron despite Zips' coaching move, says Princeton coach Gary Croley Jr.
  5. I get the feeling that TW is mailing in this coaching search, just like last time. This time he's focusing too hard on coaches with an Akron connection instead of looking for the best person nationally. So our choices are either a D-II coach that nobody cares about outside his former players, a sleazy used car salesman from UConn, or a 31 year old who's spent almost his entire 8-year assistant coaching career in the Northwest-Ohio corner of the MAC.
  6. He was beating the drum often and loudly for Fickell and calling TW an idiot for not hiring him. Now...Fickell is "tainted" and worthless. If you listen to Zach...it is your own fault. Things change. If you're stuck living with how things were in the past with no regards to how they are now... it's your own fault.
  7. He's "advising" us to take a position coach with no experience running a team or calling plays. That's not encouraging at all. Anyone in particular? Taver Johnson. He's the cornerback coach.
  8. He's "advising" us to take a position coach with no experience running a team or calling plays. That's not encouraging at all.
  9. The only reason he's even mentioning anything about our coaching search is that he wants to be able to write more stories and turn another generation of local sports fans into apathetic fools who believe that we're a D-II school competing with Ursuline College and John Carrol. And it's easier for him to do that if he doesn't have to learn anything about a new coach, since he has old stories from the Lee Owens days that he can just fall back on if Winters becomes our coach.
  10. Realism? You're the one masquerading as an Akron fan. Go back to the YSU boards.
  11. You really are a depressing concern-troll.
  12. Maybe we should hire him as the new head coach. At the very least, he would make a good defensive coordinator. Ianello stuck him where he was because he was pretty much forced to keep a coach from the Brookhart era to provide some continuity, but he didn't want to give the guy a nice position that he could hand out to one of his friends.
  13. The average MAC coach now makes $375k per year. The average BCS coach makes $1.4 million. Thanks to some major donors stepping up, we offered Tressel $1.5 million per year. They won't commit that kind of money to another candidate. If we can't pay at least $500k per year, we will not be able to get anybody at all to coach for us.
  14. Rob Senderoff.
  15. Last time, we took some old coach's (Barry Alvarez) recommendation over having a legitimate coaching search. Look where that got us. Are we going to listen to Tressel just because of who he used to be?
  16. Let him say what ever he wants. Just don't follow his advice.
  17. How will anybody know whether our football team is exciting if they aren't already in the seats watching the game? They already took the chance on seeing a team they didn't know well the past few years because of the stadium, and they got burned by a terrible product on the field. They won't take that chance again.
  18. Wow. You really let your hopes get too high regarding Tressel. Landing him was a HUGE stretch at best for Akron. This kind of attack on Tressel is silly, and pointless. Please everyone, let's get on with the search. My hopes are for the survival of the football program. It's more than about wins and losses, it's about the community and their support for the program. Can you name another candidate what would be able to garner instant support from the people and businesses of Akron? Nobody outside the old hardcore fans know who Paul Winters is, let alone Toledo's OC. Go around town and ask people if they know who Paul Winters is and if they would be excited if he were to come here. All you'll get is blank stares. Tressel was it. Our only shot at seeing the community rally. Anybody else, and you'll have to wait years to get even a third of the support.
  19. All the hype about Tressel has proven that the community wants to be excited about Akron football. They just need someone to be excited about. I hope Wistrcill takes note. We need more than just a coach, we need someone who will create a buzz. If Toledo's OC is really our second choice, then we will make another huge hiring mistake. We simply cannot afford to wait until the new coach "builds" something over the course of a few years before they manage to win enough to excite the community. A coach finally getting to six wins three years later while languishing in obscurity won't do jack to help the program. The coach needs to be recognizable, someone people are interested in keeping tabs on while he struggles to fix things in the early goings. Last time, I said the same thing about what our coach needed to be. Instead, Wistrcill hired a no-name nobody with no real resume. I hope he's learned his lesson. I don't think Paul Winters is that guy. I do think Terry Bowden is. People understand the name Bowden. The only people who recognize Winters are the hardcore fans from over a decade ago. That won't excite the community enough to throw their support behind the program. Carl Pelini and Brian Polian are other good names.
  20. Coach Tressel, we offered you a chance at redemption. A chance to move beyond your past mistakes and to build something special. We went to extraordinary lengths to prove how much we thought of you, offering you triple what any MAC school has ever paid a coach before. We were willing to eat your sanctions without a second's hesitation. And you still turned us down. I hope you rot away, as a bitter man who is only known for bringing scandal and ruin to your old teams.
  21. Maybe you don't remember just how awful our offense was with Shane Montgomery calling the plays. The Ianello years may have overshadowed it, but there is no way he is the guy to turn the program around.
  22. I would recommend YSU Offensive Coordinator and former Miami (OH) head coach Shane Montgomery. Let me tell you guys something, he is an offensive mastermind and has helped bring in some quality recruits to Youngstown State. YSU led the Missouri Valley Football conference in offense this past year and was top 5 in all of FCS football. Definitely think he would be throwing his resume in for this job, however I do NOT want to see him go! That's the best joke I've read all day!
  23. Wistrcill HAS to say something definitive tomorrow.
  24. I would hope you all buy season tickets ASAP. Because they will sell out rather quickly and I would prefer that the hardcore fans get the best seats instead of bandwagoners.
  25. The media, aside from the lake County newspaper. They're trying to scare him away.
