Just in from footballscoop: "Multiple sources close to Stoops have informed us today that despite other offers, Stoops is locked in with Urban to be his defensive coordinator." So I guess you can mark his name off the list. Either he's going to OSU, or to someplace like FAU.

This thread really changed once the NewMember posts went through the system. Tonight is the first real basketball game at the JAR this year. Will I be able to hear the people standing next to me talk about the game, all the way across the arena from the band? Will they expand to have thirty trombones? Will they play Detroit's fight song (I think it's Journey's Don't Stop Believing)?

Assistant coaches are generally kept on a single-year renewable contract. Coordinators may have multi-year contracts, but that's usually only at schools that can afford it. We won't have to worry about paying the assistants. We just won't renew their contracts.

How many of these other reports are just taking what was posted on footballscoop.com and using it as their source? That ESPN one was posted several hours before the WMU game.

Looks like Stoops might already be out of the running. Offered the job at FAU. We need to move fast, because other schools have a head start. Same thing happened last time, all the good candidates were being hired away while our coaching search dragged on for weeks.

Somebody at a BCS school will hire him. They'll look at the same resume that Wistrcill saw and they'll jump on the chance to have him as a recruiting coordinator. Just because somebody works at a BCS school does not mean they're very smart.

If he gets another job, which he will, we only pay the difference. He's not gonna sit on his ass for three years and collect a paycheck, otherwise he'll never get back in. We'll only end up eating a very small fraction of this contract. small fraction? With the last two years on his resume, who is going to pay him a large fraction of what he currently gets? Last year at OSU, Luke Fickell made about $200k. I expect Ianello to end up getting paid somewhere between $100k and $150k as a BCS position coach. So in a best-case scenario we're on the hook for maybe 2/3rds of his salary.

The team is on the bus home right now. Won't be getting back until around after 10:00 tonight. Probably too late to have a sit-down in TW's office. Maybe tomorrow we'll hear something. Go to the basketball game Saturday and keep your ears open.

Just thinking here. What if we fire Wistrcill, hire Tressel as the new AD, and then he conducts a coaching search and concludes that he's the best candidate for the head coaching job?

With Owens, it was the night of. I'm not sure about JD. Regardless, this is happening. I think I remember JD being immediately after the final game, or early the next day.

I really do believe that Tressel is in play. If we were smart, we've been talking to him for weeks now. And not just the university, but all our major sponsors as well. If they promise to bring in top-notch support, it might sway him. If he really is coming here, our major donors, like the CEOs of Infocision, Summa, FirstEnergy and the like would know something. And I believe they do.

Maybe the rumors were "leaked" to gauge the community's reaction. And that reaction has ranged from neutral to elation. Nobody wants to keep him, and the only negative responses have to do with being unsure of how to pay his contract, not that they actually want another year with him as the coach.

Guys from places like OSU usually consider Akron not to be in D-I.

Look, it's not like he's going to be surprised by getting fired. What's the point in putting it off, except to make it tougher to get to his mother's funeral because he has to coach a football game? What's worse: getting fired so you can move on with your life during a difficult time, or being kept around but knowing with absolute certainty that you're going to be fired in a few days? Keep in mind that, unlike you and me, he still gets paid his full salary either way. If I were in that situation, I would just want to get it over immediately so that I could focus on everything else. I wouldn't want to be kept around. When it's over, it's over.
