Basketball attendance during Mack's tenure:06/07: 356807/08: 345408/09: 2984I'm not liking this trend at all. If Can't is any indicator, winning the MAC championship does not mean higher attendance the following year in basketball like it does in football.
-
really bad football combined with really bad records makes really bad attendance.Maybe, but 2007 had a 4-8 record and the highest attendance. 2008 a better record with more significant games (Cinci, last RB game) but the worst attendance. It's the opposite of what you're saying.2006 can be attributed to winning the MAC championship the previous year.
-
Football attendance during Mack's tenure:2006: 161322007: 169422008: 11,952Why is it that the Rubber Bowl's last season, with a more favorable schedule including a BCS home game saw such terrible attendance?
-
The parking lot next to the field house is about the same size as the JAR's footprint. I think you could put a 8,000 seat stadium there. A building the size of the JAR could hold a lot more if you don't have all the offices and classrooms attached to it.
-
Ugh. Why'd they have to paint the MAC logos first?

Former Zip qualifies for the US Open (golf)
ZachTheZip replied to zippyfan34's topic in Other Sports
I forget if this is the same kid or not, but some kid who played for Akron and left a while back was being a pretty big douche. He was quoted in some newspaper saying how he loves OSU and Akron is below him. Sounds like a major tool to me. No thanks.Kind of like when our head coach left to be an assistant at Can't. At least I think that was in golf.Maybe Akron should just drop the sport. UA just isn't douchey enough for golfers. Spend the extra partial-scholarships you would gain on Rifle or something. -
That's a very good location, provided they can attach it to the existing building to form a sort-of sports mega-plex. It would put Akron's sports complex back on top after OSU completes their rec-center competition.

UA advertising, What do you think?
ZachTheZip replied to ksu sucks's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
Just don't do anything like the infamous Appy State commercial. Going with an ad agency trying to be "hip" might get you something like that. -
A look at the supposed AD candidates
ZachTheZip replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
Whatever needs to be done to find an AD had better happen very soon. There's only two months until fall sports start. -
UA advertising, What do you think?
ZachTheZip replied to ksu sucks's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
There is certainly need for change. If the commercials showed campus more, and student activities, it would show the community that we are more of a residential school than Can't. It shows the students what thy want to see: the chance to have a great experience for the next five years while also getting a high-quality education. -
Hell, we should be favored in two of those matchups. I'll be dissapointed if we don't go at least 3-1 non-conference.
-
Only 84 days left until we shock the world. Bring them on!
-
You touched on an important point: differentiating ourselves from the rest of the schools in the area. No matter what we do, we're still lumped in with Buffalo, Ohio, Miami, Can't, BG, Toledo and the like. Just by virtue of being different we can get ahead, even if the conference is a lateral move.
-
Sitting around and expecting the MAC to change after they've been mediocre for 50 years is a stupid move. Akron needs to be actively seeking to improve their circumstances. We're doing that internally with facility upgrades and other things, but there's ony so much you can do when you're in the MAC.
-
Nobody wants to see Akron play familiar schools. That's part of the problem. Ohio, Miami, Buffalo, EMU, etc aren't interesting matchups at all to a sports fan. The MAC is boring, low-level, and nobody wants to see a MAC game.Geographically, the MAC is far too dense in Ohio and Michigan. There are jsut too many teams in a small area and they detract from each other's fan bases. If Akron and Can't were in different conferences, they could share some fans (except for when they play each other). If Akron can afford to move to the C-USA (right now we can't, but we're moving in that direction) then moving there should be a top priority.
-
Community interest, hands down. Playing teams that the people around here have heard of in a good light can't hurt. We're playing schools like Ohio and Can't, where everybody knows both the good and the bad about them. Playing teams that are not as familiar, but still recognizable by the public would be a good thing.Increased enrollment and putting a stop to open enrollment work against each other, and a self-supporting athletic department is a very rare thing.

One thing I thought was awesome was that I got a good glimpse of how tailgating could be on campus. People were set up all over the grassy areas with grills, volleyball nets, and all that stuff.
-
Everything inside the blue line is the campus footprint. If you want an on-campus stadium, pick a spot that is at either within or adjacent to the blue line.I really like the College Street-Market Street area. As it turns out, UA owns the former Mr. Hero lot and all the property across the street from the administration building. I left that out of the original map suggesting that site.
-
We sometimes talk about getting people to come to campus and see just how it has changed, and howe nice it has become. Usually the discussion revolves around the stadium.Well, today UA's campus has tens of thousands of people wandering around and most of them have never set foot here before. The AA is holding their founders day celebration on UA's campus. Since it was founded in Akron, this is the biggest such gathering in the country. While I haven't heard too many compliments on the campus, I haven't heard a single insult or complaint about how it looks, as used to be common when visitors came to the old grey campus.Thing like this are huge instruments for getting people around the country to come here and see what is going on. It's also a nice recruiting tool since the visitors often bring their families with them. Next year will be even bigger, since it's apparently going to be the 75th anniversary. By then, we would be able to house them in the stadium all at once for a massive meeting, which would be cool to see.Thing like this are great for the school and the city. It's a major influx of tourists for Akron this weekend.

Downtown Arena might not be such a good idea
ZachTheZip replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Jake, look at a map of campus and tell me exactly where such an arena could be built. The only option without removing existing buildings or the brand-new grass area by the soccer field is on the outskirts of campus by Quaker Square. Even if they tear down the JAR right after basketball season, the new one couldn't be built in time for the start of winter sports the following year. The football stadium was built on the outskirts of campus, and we had to tear down a neighborhood to make room for it. All the new dorms being built are on the outskirts, too. It expands the campus. By building an arena and one or two other buildings outside the central campus, is actually expands the school footprint. It may not be in the middle of campus now, but once it's built it would be as much on campus as the football stadium or the new Exchange dorms. -

Same story, but on ESPN.It's always a good idea to comment on as many stories as possible.

I was reading their Scout boards. They really like him and think he'll be able to fix all the same problems that he never got around to working on here, like increasing attendance and improving the local perception.(P.S. I see all you Cougar fans lurking. If you have questions about Mack, feel free to ask them. We can probably give you more details than the press releases)
