Nick Gasser earned Mid-American Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the East Division, this week. Gasser converted two field goals and four extra points. His field goal makes were 24 yards and 30 yards. He also had one punt for 47 yards which landed inside the 20.

No winners this week, Josh Ward had the only sack, and all members guessed at least 2 or more. Meeks and Hanson were credited with one QB hurry each, while Jamal Davis was credited with two. The Bears had a specific game plan of getting the ball out of the QBs hand quickly. I thought Ward, Davis and Sampson were having great success beating their man and getting into the backfield.

I heard they were still in Nebraska. 8 players had to wear alternate numbers for this game.

Good luck everyone, stay dry.

For all road trips this fall, the Zips will don new travel attire, featuring navy blue blazers, white button-down shirts, khaki pants, and blue-and-gold striped ties. “Thanks to the generosity of one of our most successful entrepreneurial football alums, former QB Matt Kaulig (1992-95), owner of LeafFilter and Kaulig Racing, we were able to purchase travel suits for our entire football team,” head coach Terry Bowden said. “We call this program ‘Dressed for Success’ and one of our graduate assistants Sean Levy has been in charge of putting it together. Not only does it allow our players to represent the University of Akron in a very classy way on road trips, but I am amazed at how proud our players feel when they all dress so nicely for our trips. One of the rewards our players will receive is when they graduate, they will get to take their suit with them and hopefully wear on their first job interview.” “JCPenney Commercial is absolutely ecstatic to partner with the University of Akron’s football team for the 2018-19 academic year,” said Michael H. Brownlee, JCPenney Commercial national account manager. “This will mark the first year that JCPenney will be partnering with the University of Akron to outfit the entire football team with travel day suits and accessories to make sure they are stylish, confident, and GAMEDAY ready! We all know that when you look great, you perform GREAT! Coach Bowden and the University of Akron football staff have been awesome to work with, and we truly cherish the relationship we’ve built since the inception of this program. We look forward to a fantastic year of great football for the Zips and nurturing this amazing partnership for years to come!” Photo: by @ZipsFB

In the teams’ last meeting in 2012, head coach Terry Bowden got win No. 1 in the Blue and Gold in record fashion as the Zips set or tied six team and two individual school records, in addition to one conference mark, in a 66-6 win over Morgan State at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field. Akron’s 66 points and 753 yards of total offense broke a nine-year mark set on Sept. 20, 2003. The Zips also finished with a program-best 43 first downs, also in that contest against Howard. UA set a school record for completions as well with 44. Akron also set the program and Mid-American Conference mark for passing yards (565) and posted the third-most offensive yards in league history with 753. Akron’s 59 pass attempts tied the UA school mark.Dalton Williams finished the game connecting on 37-of-48 passes for 446 yards and three touchdowns. His 94 completions over the last three games broke Charlie Frye’s school record in that category (89). He also set the single-game completions mark.Jawon Chisholm led all rushers with 129 yards on 18 carries. It was his fifth-career 100-yard game on the ground (four in 2011). Conor Hundley added two rushing touchdowns, while Marquelo Suel had 99 yards on six catches. In the first meeting in 2009, the teams played before a sold-out crowd of 27,881 fans in the inaugural game at InfoCision Stadium-Summa Field. UA jumped out to a 24-0 edge at halftime en route to a 41-0 victory. Deryn Bowser had eight receptions for 86 yards and three touchdowns. QB Chris Jacquemain went 13-of-22 for 162 yards and three touchdowns.

OddsShark predicts Akron won't be ☠️? Flying the Flag ?☠️ PS I didn't vote Maverick to lead the team in receptions, but it won't come as a big shock to me if he does. IF he is in a position to catch a ball, and I'm a QB, I would have a hard time not giving him a chance to run with the ball. From what I have seen so far, he is a high percentage option for positive yardage that gives our offense a good chance to extend a time consuming drive, and keep the Nebraska offense on the sideline. Maybe I'm reading too much into preseason snaps though.

Discuss your answers below. Bryan thinks Nebraska could be ripe for an upset. "The more this line grows, the more I feel comfortable leaning toward Akron. The hype surrounding Frost’s return to Nebraska is not unfounded. However, that doesn’t mean the Cornhuskers will hit the ground running. They have a lot of problems to address, and Akron is an above-average MAC team, so I don’t necessarily see Nebraska winning this game going away. With the line greater than three touchdowns, I’ll take my chances with the Zips." "Keep in mind that the Cornhuskers have a world of problems defensively. Nebraska gave up over 50 points in each of their final three games last season. That includes games against Minnesota and Iowa, two teams that aren’t exactly prolific offensively" "If this game were scheduled at the end of the season, I might feel differently. But I don’t think Nebraska is going to be that impressive early in the year. There’s not a lot making me think that the Cornhuskers can win this game by more than a touchdown or two. With a spread that’s way too big, I’ll take Akron and the points in this one."

Both are valid points, but from what I saw in the summer, both players looked better than last year. Kato is throwing the ball with more confidence, and Van is hitting holes hard. He looked like a different back to me, maybe the o-line has something to do with that as well. Let's hope what I think I saw translates to Saturday. If coach Bowden's history with the Zips is any kind of indicator, those two will not be the only two that play at their respected positions on Saturday. Go Zips!!!

I agree. Maybe it was based on him playing with another team? ??♂️

Notes from scrimmage I'd mentioned Brandon Mitchell previously. 6' 6" 220 lb wide out that got a lot of PT on Saturday. He originally tried out for the football team 4 years ago. He had difficulty catching the ball, so he opted to join Dennis Mitchell's track team. Per NCAA rules, if you play 4 years of a given sport, starting as a true freshman, you can play a different sport in your 5th year. So Brandon decided to give football another try. The staff told him "If you want to play football, come out every day and catch 70 - 100 balls." Brandon put in the work, and here he is. He showed the results of his efforts in a nice 15 yard catch courtesy of walk-on TJ Deshields. He also had a nice climb-the-ladder catch in the corner of the end zone that was ruled incomplete. I'm convinced replay would have overruled it. But how nice will it be for the Zips to have a 6' 6" wide out, with hops, in the red zone?! He'll be a fun one to watch in scrimmage #2. I was at this scrimmage, I thought he looked good. Maybe left off the depth chart, but a red zone option. Maybe decided it wasn't for him again. Brandon Mitchell ??? I would guess Brady sees as many snaps as Ward. I'm not basing this on anything more than you know about the situation though.
