With wins over BCS schools in the past two weeks for both Toledo and Miami, it’s not possible for us to place YSU ahead of either school, but rest assured that we will hear about it. Without further ado, the Ohio College Football Rankings after Week #5:1 - Ohio State - 5-0 - The Buckeyes continue to roll with a 30-7 win on the road @ Minnesota. With upsets across the nation including losses by Florida, West Virginia, Texas and Oklahoma, the Buckeyes have vaulted to #4 in both polls. Ohio State faces their toughest test of the season this weekend, a match-up @ #23 Purdue on Saturday night.2 - Cincinnati - 5-0 - The Bearcats put up another 52 points in a 52-23 win at San Diego State just a few days after being ranked in the Top 25 for the first time since 1976. UC’s non-conference schedule is now over and the remaining 7 games are all against the much-improved Big East, with Rutgers up first on Saturday.3 - Bowling Green - 3-1 - BG defeated next year’s Sun Belt member and will-be new Football Bowl Subdivision member Western Kentucky 41-21 on Saturday to keep the #3 spot. BGSU has a tough road test at #7 Boston College on Saturday as they look to pull another MAC upset over a BCS opponent.4 - Can't State - 3-2 - Putting Can't ahead of Akron will not go over well with many, but after Akron was thoroughly embarrased by UConn and Can't won @ Ohio, the edge goes to the flushes despite their loss @ Akron a week ago. Can't hosts Miami on Saturday as the Golden flushes look to defeat another MAC East opponent.5 - Ohio - 2-2 - The Bobcats defense was porous and their offense flat until the 4th Quarter in their 33-25 loss to Can't State on Saturday. A win against an improving Buffalo Bulls on Saturday is a must for Ohio if they want to have a chance to represent the MAC East in the MAC Championship game again in 2007.6 - Akron - 2-2 - The Zips fall thanks to a “what have you done for me lately” after UConn thumped Akron 44-10. As a result, the Zips come in at #6 in the state of Ohio. Akron’s next test is a tough one as they travel to Kalamazoo to face Western Michigan.7 - Miami - 2-3 - “The RedHawks host Syracuse next weekend in what will likely be another ugly game as Syracuse comes off an upset of Louisville.” That is what I said last week, and it appears that Syracuse didn’t come prepared for the RedHawks as Miami won at home 17-14. Miami looks to keep the momentum with a tough road game @ Can't State on Saturday.8 - Toledo - 1-4 - Miami’s win over a BCS school pivots them back ahead of Toledo who beat a BCS school just a week ago. The Rockets are already 0-2 against the MAC West which likely means their hopes for a MAC Championship are gone, but there’s no doubt this team has the talent to win several more games and finish with a respectable record. Saturday will be an easy “W” for the Rockets as they host Liberty.9 - WannabeU - 4-1 - A win over Missouri State cannot compare to Can't and Toledo beating Iowa State, Miami beating Syracuse or BG beating Minnesota. Complain all you want YSU fans, but unless you can match up against Football Championship Subdivision teams each week, we’re not going to know if you truly are as good as the other teams on this list, Sagarin rankings or not.

Eastern Michigan – A big win at NIU got the Eagles back to believing they can be more then just a yearly bottom feeder in the west; if the offense can pick up some consistency, the defense is good enough to push EMU towards a .500 season. Most Disappointing Team(s):1. Toledo – The Rockets were expected to be in the middle of the MAC West pack but no one predicted the team to be THIS bad and possibly being the worst team in the MAC this season.2. Western Michigan – The Broncos still control their destiny with regards to winning the West Division, but the overall MAC favorite by most every publication including the MAC Media looked awful in their three non-conference I-A games. Top Divisional Teams to Date:MAC East: Bowling Green and Can't State look to be the class of the MAC East thus far and even though the Golden flushes slipped at Akron, the Can't State/BG showdown may very well be for the divisional title.MAC West: Ball State looks to be the part but must prove themselves against both Western & Central Michigan. If they continue to play like they did at Navy and at Nebraska, the Cardinals not only will win the division, they’ll win the MAC title game and likely beat Illinois and Indiana later this season. MAC Football Team Capsules Akron ZipsTotal Offense: 244.4Total Defense: 384Scoring Offense: 17Scoring Defense: 27.8What Has Happened:The Zips had a nice early win against Can't State and their defense played well against Ohio State. For the Zips, the offense must get into gear and fast if Akron has any shot for a winning record and possible bowl birth. WR Jabari Arthur is the real deal but inconsistent QB play has killed Akron thus far. Of their two QBs, neither ranks in the MAC’s top 13 in passing efficiency. The Zips have given up 14 QB sacks to date, which ranks 12th out of 13 teams. The bottom line is this team can’t score right now and then the defense wears down in the second half.What Will Happen:Akron will continue to struggle offensively but their defense will play well enough for the Zips to contend all year long. Don’t expect much more than a .500 season though.

On the loss to Connecticut...“The game was a tale of two halfs in many ways. We played pretty good football in the first half. We felt like it was game of momentum shifts and a couple of them we didn’t respond well too. We certainly had an opportunity for more points in the first half. Obviously, the momentum at half changed when we didn’t get any points out of the last drive but I thought we came out and rebounded from that fine. We got the interception right out of the half in the first series but then we got called for a hold after having the first down. We came back and defense again responded. From there I didn’t think we responded well to the momentum shifts. We are not a team that is going to come out and throw 50 points on the board very often. We got behind and did not recover well. We played a good football team but now we are into Mid-American Conference play the rest of the way. That’s where our goals are at.”On the schedule...“We have played the fourth toughest schedule to date. Ohio State and the University of Connecticut are two of the toughest defenses in the nation but there is still life, no doubt. We understand exactly where we are. We have goals that we set each year. Obviously, winning the MAC is the number one goal. We have BCS goals as well. If you recall this football team last year, the first thing that comes to mind is not the upset against North Carolina State it was the rest of the way. In the end the win against NC State was a great momentum builder and exciting but it meant zero to the season. The 2005-06 season we were 5-3 and lost, I believe, most of our BCS goals but we won the MAC Championship and went to Detroit for a bowl game. That is what people remember of that football team. Right not we are looking at the fact that we are 1-0 in the league.”On quarterback Chris Jacquemain...“Chris played pretty well, he had a good first half. He played well enough that we left him in for the second quarter series that Carlton Jackson was going to play. We thought we needed to continue with him. He did make some errors, the one critical one and he also took some sacks he shouldn’t have but I think he got that under control and did a better job in the second half.”On the third quarter breakdowns to date...“There are a couple reasons we haven’t done well in third quarters. At Ohio State we just got worn out. The defense had played so hard in the first half. At Indiana, the quarterback got loose and made some great plays and was even better than we thought he was. I think you go in with a plan and then make your adjustments at halftime. At UCONN we went and defensively were playing well. Then all of a sudden they go away from every tendency they have. We got hit a little bit off balance. We are playing good football teams. We obviously have to play better but to point the finger at the third quarter as to why, I don’t know. One of the challenges I have given to the team is to finish better. We finished well at Can't but had some breakdowns at OSU and Indiana.”On the loss of John Mackey to an ACL injury...“John is so vocal and so respected for his work ethic and how he plays. I think that inspires other guys to ramp it up a notch. Your talking about a kid that played through a shoulder injury last year I don’t think anyone else would have played through. There is that respect level and seeing that in the huddle juices the guys up a little bit. That is something that the defense collectively has to ramp up.”On the progress of the offensive line...“We are still making some mistakes that hurt us but we are getting there. In terms of grading they’re kind of borderline right now. In terms of passing I think part of that is competition and who we have played but I think we have made great improvements. Our missed assignments have been lessened dramatically. I’m not going to say I am happy with line but I am pleased with the progress.”On wide receiver Jabari Arthur...“I can’t say enough good things about him. He was the first player in our office this morning to watch tape. He sacrificed his dream of being a college quarterback. I thought he would do better at wide receiver and I think that’s proven out for him. In every way he is the right kind of guy. Obviously, he is a physical talent but also he has a mature demeanor about him that is really engaging. He is a pleasure to have on the team.”On playing Western Michigan Saturday...“They are a very good football team. In my mind they were the favorite to win the MAC. I thought they were the most talented with the most guys back. It is the same crew, they are physical, they run the ball well, have good skill players, and are big up front. Defensively, they are complicated and they are a physical football team. Last year they handled our offense up front. They also have a good kicking game, one of the best punters in the nation. Those are our challenges.”source

1. Ball State2. Can't3. BG4. Central5. AkronThe Zips got the Wagon Wheel, but the offense just can’t get rolling smoothly enough to convince me that this team can last over the entire season. A week ago, I thought the QB situation was figured out, but Carlton Jackson lasted just three passes against UCONN, and sophomore Chris Jacquemain went back in to action with efficiency but not much downfield threat.The defense did a great job against a really solid UCONN attack for a half, but looked brutal in the second half as Husky QB Tyler Lorenzen led three straight TD drives in the third quarter. If the D can survive Tim Hiller and Western, this squad could very well by 4-0 in the MAC by November.6. Western.The offense put up a really strong performance against the sieve-like Toledo D Saturday, putting the Rockets away with a Jamarko Simmons TD reception with under five left to go up 21. The pass D finally showed up, and played like a unit with multiple all-conference performers should, but the D also gave up a lot of yards to Rocket RB Jalen Parmele (20 cars, 130 yards). Parmele is a really good back, but this defense still has to show me something before I consider this team a contender for the West. How often do you get this the fifth game of the year; WMU had two backs get their first 100 yard games of the year against the Rockets.7. OU8. Buffalo9. Miami10. Toledo11. NIU12. Eastern13, Temple

Brookhart benched Carlton Jackson against UConn for skipping a morning’s worth of meetings and treatments for his ankle on Tuesday, a source tells me.Either the coach decided to extend that punishment, or he liked what he saw out of Jacquemain. My guess is probably the latter, given Jacquemain’s decent stats against a staunch defense.

Hilltopper, did you get to watch the game on tv this week? I saw CJ7 on numerous occasions meet CJ11 as he was coming off the field. Tapping him on the head, discussing things. He looked into the game last week. Is this a sign? I hope so.

It's embarrassing as a fan that we (Zip's fans) have to get excited about a home town paper placing the home town team on the cover of the sports page. I can't bring myself to type on this subject.

Our beloved mascot the Hokie Bird lost to the University of Akron's "Zippy Kangaroo" in the Capital One Mascot Bowl.I love the Hokie Bird and the reason I'm writing this is because I'm extremely disappointed with our university's lack of support for him. There were 12 mascots playing this year in the Capital One competition, including other big universities such as University of Georgia, University of Virginia, University of California Los Angeles, and Syracuse.Each week the Hokie Bird faces a different mascot in a competition to receive the most online votes in seven days. It's a very simple process to vote and anyone with access to the Internet can do it once a day, seven days a week. This means Tech students have a chance to vote for the Hokie Bird seven times each week. There are currently 21,997 undergraduate and 6,111 graduate students here at Virginia Tech.That means that a total of 28,108 current Virginia Tech students could be voting for our adored mascot. If each of these students voted once a day, seven days a week that would make a total of 196,756 votes each week. Unfortunately, however, not every student here at Tech voted, and that's why our mascot is now 1-1 coming off an embarrassing loss last week to Zippy. In that week two loss the Hokie Bird received a total of 36,388 votes, well short of the potential support he could receive if our entire university was supporting him.When I told my friends I was really upset about our university's lack of support for our mascot, some of them said it was too much to ask of students to take the time every day and vote for our mascot in a contest that doesn't really matter. I disagree. I had a friend time how long it took me to vote and it took a total of 27 seconds. To be fair though, I'll round this number up to a solid minute since sometimes the Internet is slow.That comes to a total of seven minutes a week out of 10,080 total, or a whopping .006 percent of a student's week. I know as students our workload can be tough at times but I don't believe students can't find seven minutes a week for this. On Facebook the group "Save the Stick It In Cheer" has 9,127 members. However, the Facebook group trying to support the Hokie Bird cause has 379 members.This sends the message that a cheer is more important than our mascot who represents everything we try to be as Hokies. If 9,000 people can find the time to join this group to save a cheer, why can't they take seven minutes a week for something even more important, supporting our mascot?When I go to football games in Lane Stadium I hear 60,000 fans and students cheer as loudly as they can when they see the Hokie Bird bench press after scores. His job is to fire up the fans to inspire our sports teams to play harder and therefore be more successful. If he fights for the sports teams that we love, why can't each of us take seven minutes out of our week to fight for him? As I walk around campus, I see hundreds of students wearing shirts with his image. Saying the contest doesn't matter is totally ridiculous, too.If the Hokie Bird wins, Tech students will have bragging rights for the rest of the year and will have proof that our mascot really is the best in the country.This week is homecoming, when all around campus students are showing their pride in a great university. What better way to show that pride to the entire nation than by voting for our beloved Hokie Bird each day? Go to www.capitalonebowl.com to vote and tell all your friends to do the same. I challenge the students of this university, who refer to themselves as Hokies, to start fighting for the mascot they supposedly love so much.

University of Akron senior linebacker Brion Stokes was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week for his effort in the Zips’ 27-20 victory over Can't State, allowing the Zips to reclaim the coveted Wagon Wheel.Stokes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler HS) registered a team-high 10 tackles, including nine solo stops. He also had a tackle for a loss and a fumble recovery. The tackle for loss came midway through the second quarter when the Golden flushes, leading 7-0, attempted a fake field goal. Stokes sniffed out the play and dropped the holder for a four-yard loss. Later in the quarter, Stokes recovered a Julian Edelman fumble on the Can't State 33. Three plays later, Akron scored to tie the game at 7-7 with 53 seconds left in the half.With senior captain John Mackey leaving the game in the first quarter with an injury, Stokes led a defensive unit that forced four turnovers (two interceptions and two fumble recoveries), had seven tackles for losses (including three sacks) and held Can't State to just 3-of-13 on third down conversions.This marks the second time Stokes has won the MAC’s weekly honor. Last year, he was tabbed for collecting four sacks in the Zips’ win over Buffalo. On a day where more college football teams won games when getting outgained by 100 or more yards than I can ever remember, Akron got maybe the most improbable win of all. Jackson was pretty bad, completing just 7 of 20 passes for 99 yards, and the team was outgained by Can't 375-245, but the defense showed plenty of moxie, forcing turnovers on three of Can't’s last four drives to secure the win. The linebackers didn’t handle Eugene Jarvis very well, but this was a big-time performance from one of the MAC’s best D’s
