  1. Im 50/50 on the UA logo on top of Quaker Square... Sure it'd be an awesome advertisement piece, but this is a historical landmark we are talking about here. Not sure if many of you are aware, but UA did change Quaker Square's logo around a bit to highlight the "u" in Quaker and "a" in Square" and aligned them like the UA logo... they have it as a sign on the building coming down broadway. It looks cool and with those letters gold/yellow and the rest blue, it really gives you the idea it's a UA property
  2. the words "the stupid, it burns" are running through my head.Must be great to be the 1 and done team...
  3. very much so. He had the composure of a veteran. I too agree he needs a little more confidence and some more work overall, but he's very close to being a consistent inside presence. He will certainly do us very well for another 3 years. I will say, he needs work on his free throws. I saw him miss too many shots late in the game that would have helped put the game in our favor. While I am nitpicking, its something he should work on. Hey may not have the outside shot like the real thing, but he's definitely becoming our version of the Cav's legend "Z"
  4. pretty much gonna have to second that one. Lebron's shot only outduels that one because it was the game-winner
  5. Steve was doin work all game long. I could tell he wanted this victory and when the lead suddenly vanished, it almost seemed like he was the one who had the most energy. How about next game we blow WMU out of the water in the second half and get our starters some rest?!
  6. The games are on ESPN360 for the brethren who live in the land of cubicles and desk jobs.
  7. Its a little late at this point to get involved since after basketball season the rowdies schedule slows down. They will do some events for softball and baseball, but generally nothing as big as basketball.Next fall, keep an eye out for them in the Student Union. The first 2-3 weeks they are usually at a table on the 2nd floor by the market. Can't miss them, especially of Ian is there (he's the big guy). Sign up early because they usually run out of tshirts and you have to wait for the next order to come in.What Zippy5 is saying is true. There are far too many discouraging points about getting to the student sections. If there's too much of a hassle for the casual student to cheer their team on, they won't want to sit down there because its easier to sit up top. I agree, the University needs to market to students and make it easier for them to sit where they need to be - IN THE STUDENT SECTIONS. For the larger-draw games, I do agree about the wristbands because it makes sure those who actually are active and got their butts to the ticket office get the spots they earned.
  8. That is an excellent idea. You are almost guaranteed to get a good chunk of people who look past the "opt-out" and will get signed up by default. This helps spread the word to more people, and in turn gets the students feeling like the game-day attendance and atmosphere is what we do here. It should be noted, however, that mass Emails do not cut it, AT ALL. I work in the webteam department and we are partially responsible for sending out the ZipMail weekly updates. I can tell you that the vast majority of students don't check their UA email account very often, if at all. The only way to market the sports events to the majority of students is signs, banners, flyers, mailings sent to the mailboxes of all on-campus students, and signs put up on the doors of every dorm room. The athletic department NEEDS to work with ResLife to market to the student population that lives in university dorms. Maybe even run some deals where the on-campus students have to go to X amount of games to get a free meal at Rob's or something? They desperately need to market to the students that are here during the basketball season and use incentives to get things started. As long as the students who already go are welcoming of the newcomers and build an electric atmosphere, they'll keep coming back.
  9. Idunno about you, but I found this stadium to be AWESOMEhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Est%C3%A1dio_AXAhttp://en.wikiarquitectura.com/index.php?t...nicipal_Stadium (crappy english too)http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium_menu/...municipal.shtmlI love the fact that it was built into the walls of a mountain, has entrance from the top on one side of the stadium. PLUS, it has a 54,000 sq ft room under the field where conventions and such are made, aside from providing a walkway between the two sides of the stadium. Truly a remarkable feat of engineering and an awesome piece of architectural design.
  10. I'm opposite. I like it. I hope it toughens our team up. I'm excited about Kentucky and plan on going. I bet the players from last year feel like they owe IU one. They know they can play with em with PN16 at the helm. Not a bad point.. I guess it does have its perks. Still a little confused on the absence of the bye weeks in the schedule unless we're getting them at the beginning and end of the schedule. If thats the case, thats going to wear on our players more than the back-to-back road games against BCS conference teams.
  11. Based solely on the schedule itself and not the opponents, I like the way its layed out. Last year we had that month when we had 0 home games. At least with this schedule, we've got a home game once ever 3 weeks. Starting with 2 home games, and ending with 2 is a big plus in my book. Sucks we got stuck with a Wednesday game, considering the number of Saturday games we got, I am definitely happy. As far as the opponents, its clear this is still a predominantly JD schedule, as expected. I dont particularly like playing Kentucky and Indiana on consecutive weekends both on the road because the wear-and-tear it'll put on our players, but hopefully our cupcake the week before will help get us rested up. Am I the only one who notices we don't have any Bye weeks in the middle of the schedule? I wont doubt that I am wrong, I don't see any listed or any large gaps in the dates aside from the week and a half we have between the Ball State and Miami games. Regardless, looks to be a good schedule.
  12. Quite honestly looks like it was thrown together in 20 minutes time. With a little more effort, you could have it look 100x better. Throw in the school's colors as a background using the UA shapes (that arch thing... for lack of a better word) and use some UA fonts. It just looks unprofessional to me. I know my opinion means nothing, I just wish the athletic department would make that extra effort to make the little things look better. To me, its the little things that matter most.
  13. I would like to have a word with the person who designed that pamphlet they made for the event...
  14. Just wondering if any other news regarding the stadium project has been published since those original renderings. I know that the project info I saw said "Spring of 2010", which is still some time, but I figured something new would have been posted. Thanks!
  15. Ill bite the bait, even though I shouldnt...Nobody in their right mind can sit there and say that what both UA and Buffalo do at the end of the National Anthem isn't classy without saying that any sports fans in the entire nation who do this VERY thing aren't classy. Our students, nor Buffalo's students, started doing this out of an idea from within. Rather, the "tradition" (for lack of a better word) of saying "home of the [insert home team's name]" at the end of the National Anthem has been around for as long as I know. To some of the elder members here, this may not be very long, but its enough to prove my point. We needn't be critical of Buffalo students, nor our own, for this action. Its become a ritual of the sports world long before we ever began doing it. Is it disrespectful of the National Anthem and, if applicable, the person performing it? To some extent, yes. However, I would digress that the level of disrespect involved is so low that its borderline insignificant. Never before have I ever heard of this being called out as being unclassy. If we are going to get our panties in a bunch over how classy something is during the National Anthem, we need to be getting on the case of anyone in attendance of the game who choose not to remove their hats, text, continue talking to friends, stand up, etc. These are "unclassy" things that need FAR more attention than saying "HOME OF THE ZIPS" at the end of the National Anthem. Thats all I have to add. Take it for what its worth, but know that I always remove my hat, always stand, always face the flag, always remain silent till the end, and am always respectful of the anthem, who is singing it, and what the anthem stands for.
  16. theyre starting to become an organized group... this can't be good.
  17. Ill take both. We literally STOLE Jamison from the Wizards and got a somewhat-decent PG in Telfair. All we gotta do is wait for the Wizards to buyout Z's contract, resign Z in 30 days, and we'll be set. Shaq gets extra minutes so we'll see how he does there and then Z gets extra rest for the playoffs..now this is all assuming that the Wizards do buyout his contract, AND we are able to resign Z before the deadline, but all indications show it should happen.I wouldn't have wanted Amare anyways, not for what the Suns were asking for him.
  18. Always forcing the topic, as usual, I see.
  19. Cleveland Hopkins has an advertisement on the Info's scoreboardI just hate to look at it and know that OUR logo and website should be on that add, not Can't's. This is OUR town, not Can't's. Im absolutely sure there are OSU alum in Michigan, but you dont see OSU advertising in Ann Arbor, do you? A bit extreme, yes, but the fact remains that our University should be pushing to make the entire city of Akron a supporter of our athletic programs, not letting others come in here and stealing the little support we already have.
  20. I would suppose you are right on the whole "UA Admin not stepping up their advertising" in addition to Can't State purchasing the advertisement space. Also, I too think its not going to do a whole lot anyways, but it was really annoying to see a Can't State ad in the middle of what I thought to be UAs town. I guess the silver lining to all this is that Can't State is so desperate that theyre willing to advertise in their own rival's town.
  21. Noticed on my way to class this morning that the ABJ marquee on their "tower" (if it could be called that) was advertising for Can't State Sports.com and Can't State Basketball... in big bold letters... The ad kept repeating itself for as long as I could see. Seeing that, when the ABJ is pretty much across the street from UA and in direct view of every Akronite in the downtown area, made me wanna
  22. Well according the ABA (the group that accredits the program) the "old one" is awful. So it's a "must do" project. On a side note, and I know we've all mentioned it before, why does everyone in Akron hate the University so much? Not everyone in Akron hates UA but your point is well taken. Many do and I have observed that they tend to be people who are just unhappy with themselves; those who like to see themselves as elitists, anti-culture pseudo hippies and those who are just plain stupid, anti-education hicks that still make up a large portion of the Akron population. You see this last category make up a large portion of our sister university's host community to the east. This category is also made up of those who still think downtown should return to being what it once was in the 50s and 60s, which will never happen.Worse than those who hate UA are those who are indifferent to it. They only acknowledge the university when they want to exploit it to achieve an agenda that is political or self-serving. The mayor is one of these people and the leadership at the ABJ is made up of these people. They are very parochial Akron dinosaurs who like individual facilities or services of the university ( E.J. Thomas Hall, the new stadium) but beyond that make UA invisible. These are the people who separate UA's athletics from the university and who want UA to build a new arena downtown instead of on the campus where it belongs. And don't let them kid you. They hate that the new football stadium is on the campus and not downtown. They are also the group of people who make too big of a deal about the Polsky Building being a pseudo-university facility. At best they see UA only in pieces and parts and cherry pick the parts they like at the expense of the university as a whole. It is this group of indifferent parochials who keep The University of Akron from coming off to the region as a real and authentic institution of higher education. To them it's just the same old "Akron U".thought you were gonna make an entire post without complaining about a downtown arena! silly me.stop the personal attacks. they are getting old.
