Depends on which is more significant... BSU's epic fall from the top or the collapse of our season so far?

Ill agree here. It sucks for those with families that want to bring their children and have to pay full-price for a seat. Hopefully this is a suggestion that is brought to the table after the football season at the latest. That area is the only area I would agree to a change in admission. @zipsbandman... You're pretty much right too. I think we can all come to the agreement that until we start winning and winning consistently (more than likely after the JD era), people aren't going to open their checkbooks for us and instead will complain about ticket prices. Until we have a real REASON for people to show up and watch college football on those cold nights in October and November, we'll just keep averaging 18k.
-
Thanks for the analysis ZW. It just proves how idiotic some of these claims for lower prices are. The only thing I wish the University was doing more of was promoting EVERY game all the time. How did we get 28k to the home opener? Marketing. They need to be continually pushing information out there letting everyone know "Hey! We play more than 1 home game a season!" Since the home opener, I've seen very little to keep the public, let alone the students, informed about upcoming games. JD hasn't helped either...

absolutely right... again. A UA football game shouldnt be seen mostly as a "cheap night out", but rather a gathering place for true UA fans.
-
You are absolutely correct about everything. Ticket prices are exactly where they should be. Are they more expensive than at the RB? Yes, but considering the facility we just moved to and the quality of the product we are striving for (but having issues getting), the price is well within reason. In regards to whomever it was that mentioned people not being able to pay their electric bills... it's sad that this is reality for some people in Akron, but as you pointed out, a football game shouldnt be anywhere near the priority for that person. Another thought that comes to mind... what about the thousands upon thousands that live outside of Akron, something like a half hour away? Why is it that everyone seems so dead-set on getting every person who lives in Akron at the game when, realistically, this will never happen?

Truthfully, I am okay with that. I would rather us build the right arena that benefits the entire community with a wide array of entertainment year round then try to take the pile of poo we have now and trying to make it better. If that means having to wait 5 more years until a new mayor is in town and the economy has improved, then I am all for it. Like with Infocision Stadium, Id rather us do it right the first time than regretting not having done it for the next 40 years.
-
Lets see... I can walk from Polsky to Infocision stadium in about... 20 minutes, give or take. I can walk from Infocision Stadium to the Rubber bowl in about.... 20 days (exaggerated to make a point).Point is, downtown is on the border of campus and within EASY walking distance from any point on campus. However, you CANNOT say the same about the Rubber Bowl. Your analogy holds NO water at all because its like comparing apples to oranges. Excluding the new dorms being built on Spicer, the average walk time from any of the dorms to the Polsky building (assumed as within the heart of downtown Akron) is something like 10-11 minutes walking, INCLUDING Garson Apartments which everyone here can agree is off-campus. Take that number and compare it to other MAC east schools. In fact, compare it to Can't state and you'd find that the average walking time for students to get to the MAC Center is just as much, if not more, than the average walking time for an Akron student living in a dorm. Yes, Can't State's campus is much larger and more spread out than ours, but is a 15 minute walk REALLY that bad? While Downtown Akron is not OFFICIALLY considered "on-campus" (disregarding Polsky building as on-campus), its proximity to campus and ease of access from any point on campus puts it well within the realm of possible locations for an arena. If I have to take a shuttle bus just to get to the arena, it is not somewhere thats good for the university.Keep in mind this entire post is disregarding the fact that the City/Port Authority is almost guaranteed to be a major contributor to the project, so they will have a very large say in where the arena goes. Putting a new arena funded in part by the City in the middle of campus WILL make the general public feel as though its only the University's and not both. Just food for thought.

Noticed today that the sign is back up. Appears to be pretty much the same sign that was up there before. Let's hope they used REAL bolts instead of double-sided tape

I just noticed that Google Maps has updated the University area with labels for all buildings and parking lots. In fact, almost every University has these labels on their maps. Very cool...http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source...mp;t=h&z=16

I wouldnt put it past him to try to do it... hahathen again, everything browns-related (colors, history, records, etc.) stayed in cleveland, so I believe its legally impossible for him to try it...

Momma, on the one hand I agree that we are all speculating about what happened. It's a board forum, wherein people do that. On the other hand yours is the second post that infers that the new AD is up to no good, setting up an honorable coach in order to not only get rid of him but to supply the excuse for getting rid of the staff later on. I would suggest that you are speculating just as much on that point, and I would also argue that based on the Zips' performance on the field so far, the AD needs absolutely no "other" justification to let the entire staff go at the end of the season, beyond the simple fact that after 5+ years of JD and Co, the team is a disaster on the playing field. Why would Wistrcill need any more than that to remove any of the coaches at this point?STZSTZ, JD & Co may not be getting the job done on the field, but is that a good enough reason to interrupt an ENTIRE season of play by eliminating a coach? It disrupts any chance of having any kind of success this season. Not to mention, Coach Ferri will most definitely be walking the streets jobless for a few months before coaching jobs open up in January. That does not seem like a well thought out decision to me. Let's think about those athletes for one minute.....isn't that what playing college football is all about? Think about what impact this situation may have had on you during your college football career....if your coach, whom you admired and respected was forced into a resignation two games into a season? These young men will move forward and continue working towards as many W's as they can get because they are resiliant and they have been working hard since the off season to achieve excellence. MommaI sincerely hope that you have read the news story because, as we all know, Reno resigned under his own terms. In no way was it ever implied, nor should it be assumed at this point, that the AD forced him out. All that had been done up to this point (and to our knowledge) is that there was an open investigation internally regarding potential recruiting violations by Reno. As CK mentioned more than once, these violations appear to be minor in comparison to what we are used to hearing about recruiting violations in the news. I am saddened that he made the decision to leave, and will respect him as a person for doing it when it wasn't even called for. Do we know the entire story, whether there was some "forcing" going on? No, but assuming anything right now is purely speculation. If anything, I believe Reno resigned because he felt that doing so would help the university out the best. He probably knew that staying while being investigated for recruiting violations may make things extremely hard for this year's recruiting. I truly believe that the AD had no hand in Reno's resignation and that all he is trying to do is follow procedure with the investigation.

Hell sell it by pointing to everything that comparable arenas in nearby cities bring to those communities, something that Akron is sorely missing. We don't have real concerts downtown like Toledo or Dayton, or even Canton. Lock 3 is only good for three months out of the year. There is an attitude in Akron that if you want to be entertained you have to leave the city. An arena would begin to change that.hit it on the head... If you live in Akron and want to see a big-name concert in this area, the closest venue is Blossom, and that's only open during the warmer months like Lock 3. During the winter months, they have to go all the way to Cleveland to either CSU or the Q to see a good concert. Throw into the mix a low-level pro team to compliment the Aeros and you have a good central location for cheap and enjoyable entertainment. I see the Arena happening relatively soon now. Before, I was hesitant to say that only because nothing had ever been mentioned from UA about an arena, but lately it seems there's a fire making all this smoke. Hopefully this arena will time itself perfectly with the improvement of the basketball team to where we'll be moving from a packed JAR to an even more packed arena... we can hope at least!

really need to question this one?at least at Chic-Fil-A, youre given what you actually ask for. With the Browns, its like going to McDonald's, asking for a Big Mac and being given chicken nuggets.

"small" might be an understatement. This might turn into something huge.I will go on record as saying it will NOT turn into anything huge. Because it is not. Take that to the bank.If you want to sell papers or generate "hits" you create yourself a nice headline that infers a kid was given money, a hooker, etc. ZipsNation doesn't need to sell newspapers, and we get no income from the number of "hits" our site generates, so we have the ability to keep the hyperbole to a minimum...zero if we so choose. The violation of which Coach Ferri was accused is, based upon my research, considered a "secondary violation" by the NCAA. Penalties range from absolutely nothing, to loss of a car trip or two for recruiting this fall. That's it. And those allegations remain unproven/under investigation at this time.If Ferri stepped down, he did what he felt was best for himself and his family. It is as simple as that. He busted his ass for The University of Akron for 6 years. It bothers me tremendously that this is the way it closes for him. He deserved better. If that is truly the case, then I really don't see why he would resign. Something tells me there is more to the story than your "research" has brought to light.I'll put my money on my "research" over whatever you have. My reputation on this board is pretty good, and I don't stick my neck out to this extent without good reason.Believe what you want. It's a free country. It just comes as a shock, especially if the violations are as minor as you've said they are. I gotta respect the guy regardless of what he did because he ended his career here rather than waiting and leaving it to someone else to decide. Its gotta take balls of steel to step down from a position like that over what apparently was a minor violation of recruiting policies. Good luck to him wherever he decides to go from here.

The problem that exists there is that its a high risk approach. You cannot go with this kind of strategy unless you have the attendance numbers to sustain it. If you can fairly well estimate that you will make up the money you lose by not playing a paycheck game through tickets, concessions, and merch, then it's a good idea. However, with the current attendance numbers, I just can't see the athletic department considering such a strategy because there's far too much risk for failure involved. Throw into the mix that we have contracts with OOC opponents for scheduling and one could estimate it'd take at least 4 years before we'd be able to make a schedule that gives us 6-7 home games a season. Other than those issues... I absolutely approve of the idea. The more exposure to the local community the school can make through it's football program, especially when it is consistently winning, cannot hurt at all. Yes the quality of opponents drops quite a bit, but I think in the long run it'd pay off.

wasnt the same thing said about Vince Young when he decided to go pro? Granted we can't really say much about him considering his epic mental breakdown last season, but he has done awfully well in the NFL even tho critics were constantly hanging on the fact that he doesn't throw a normal ball.

Google Maps' street view has the stadium while under construction... -
I guess they took the whole thing down. Noticed that there are no remnants of the sign on the press tower. Hopefully it was still under warranty.
