typical Can't...I wanna see a HUGE showing of Akron fans!!
-
I got the rare chance to make the trip to Buffalo this Sunday with my girlfriend. This was my first trip to UB, and I came away with quite a few first impressions. I must say I was VERY impressed with the set up the Bulls have. Concession stands were buzzing with people, plenty of student employees were manning their stations, all around it was an atmosphere much more conducive to sporting entertainment. There was even quite a bit of Bulls merchandise displayed (I had to keep my girlfriend from buying something). The seating around the court is quite impressive, much more than I expected from any MAC school. With cement walls, it had quite an industrial feel. The biggest negative I noticed early on was the lack of video board, probably saving a fair amount of money, but a big setback. Hundreds of Buffalo students were dressed in "Beat the Roo" shirts, combined with the football team and band they formed quite the student section. As mentioned by a few others where were the Akron fans? I expected at least a few more, but a Sunday afternoon probably doesn't help. Sound didn't seem to carry all that well in the large arena, but at a few points it could really get "rumbling". While the atmosphere wasn't overly intimidating it did seem like the place to be, with lots to offer for "Joe Buffalo".Oh and before I forget, we should have a halftime speech from at least a few of our Zips coaches...I was thinking Caleb Porter and Rob Ianello. It might bring in a few of the Soccer/Football fans who otherwise avoid Zips Basketball. Now onto my thoughts about the game, which I will keep brief. I'm starting to get upset with all of the rotations KD is making on the court. (Am I the only one?) There were times when the guys on the court had glimpses of success, only to be shuffled up. I feel like I'm watching a hockey game sometimes! I'm not sure if KD is taking guys out because he is frustrated they made a mistake or what but it has to prevent the Zips from generating any sort of flow. Zeke seemed to be making a difference, but he was taken out and replaced with Nik (who has been frustrating to watch as of late). Does KD have a turn style approach with our guards to try and keep them all happy and in a Zip's uniform? I'm sure it helps with fatigue, but c'mon these guys are athletes! It’s hard to see this as a problem when we get the W, but I've been noticing and grumbling about it all season. Maybe we just lack those "star players" that we need. This brings me to my next thought...Jimmy Conyers is a beast! A few more players need to step up like he has. He was really putting the moves on a few of the bulls and is a straight up work-horse. The refs in the game made some bad calls (which I've come to expect) but I don't think it was a reason from the Zips losing. There were bad calls both ways all night. KD needs to keep his cool! The shooters for Buffalo were the difference in this game. Smiley and Pierce were flat out on fire, and we gave them too many open looks. Smiley went to the same high school as me (sorry VMD) and has really stepped up his play. We'll get our revenge...

Gaining confidence as well as getting fans behind a 2-11 team would be tough but if we could pull of some big wins against quality teams it would help for sure...a balanced schedule (one that challenges a team with winnable games) sounds much better in my opinion. I think we can learn from how they schedule, but not go overboard. Losing to all our quality opponents won't make the MAC look any better... Blah Blah Blah.
Why not schedule more games like this? Look at Miami they may be 4-11, but does it really matter. An NCAA berth lies in the hands of the MAC Tournament not the regular season. Miami could get their butts kicked in all there ooc games and still make the tournament. I think its a bunch of crap when people say for us to not schedule better games like xavier, vcu, and gonzaga. At least we can gain more experience and play tougher teams that will better prepare us for the MAC Tournament instead of playing D II schools. I don't care if Akron won 2 games in their ooc schedule next year because thats not going to prohibit us from making the tournament. You can not win the games you do not schedule and by scheduling these tougher games gives us more of a chance to knock off these teams and move forward with the future of this program.we lost to austin p,uri,n.c.state,texas a.m.(uri,n.c. state, texas a&m) were chances to be top 50 teams.we lost to every one of them plus austin-p.why would it make sense to schedule more of these type games when you can't even beat one of those teams.just beat one top 50 team first. then talk about scheduling more the next year. -
thanks a bunch. hope I see quite a few zips fans thereohiobobcats.com, then click on the game link in the calendar window, click "watch" and you're golden. Pretty good production quality, decent play by play, or listen to French while watching -
Do you really think Can't would be an at large contender going 13-3 in MAC play...I doubt it. Would have to be one heck of a bracketbuster game.Just getting it in before the Captain... http://tinyurl.com/y8n67n2 -
I do worry knowing that anything can happen in the MAC... Ohio is no bottom feeder either, but I know we can win each and every game if we play to our abilities.Akron- 74BobCats-66

I like fear the roo...but only in moderation.

I saw this posted on pussycatattack:
1,100 below average despite being one of the best teams in the conference. Student turn out should pick up, so lets hope attendance follows suit as we keep winning...I also don't think we can blame the Cleveland media..aren't there a few people in Akron. If there is enough excitement locally the news will be forced to bump up coverage (however slight that may be). Also, what brought so many fans into Toledo (3-12), who is a horrible team (put nicely). New arena? Marketing? Free chipotle? The opponent (6-7)?Can't State at Ohio Attendance : 8359Central Mich. at Toledo Attendance : 5199Eastern Mich. at Western Mich. Attendance : 3224BGSUcks at Akron Attendance : 3028N. Illinois at Ball State Attendance : 2725Miami at Buffalo Attendance : 2429 ------------------------------- Total Attendance : 24,964 6 game avg : 4160 -
I'm really regretting not making the 2 hour trip to this game. Love the energy in the JAR!

I think it will either be none or a few. One player leaving could really open things up for some of the other guys. As has been stated though, this team has unfinished business and could be unreal...Am I this excited over soccer?...yes

This should keep ya busy...Mike Wise PhotosWere there anymore pictures from this game? And what is up with the Plain Dealer not even sending a reporter to the National Championship? The Beacon Journal sure did. -
One of the toughest sporting events I have had to swallow... it will sting for awhile. This team was is something special! I honestly don't like ending the game with PKs...it just takes some of the passion from the game. It seemed like only a matter of time before we broke the opposing defense, which was excellent by the way, for a goal. I won't complain too much, however. We didn't finish some chances that we needed to. We might not have won the National Championship, but in my mind that is the greatest NCAA soccer team in the nation. I'm ready for soccer season 2010...I wish it started tomorrow. The guys will be ready to steamroll through the competition. Lots of pride for Caleb and the soccer zips!

Tulsa Senior Comes Home With Elite StatusTulsa fifth-year senior Joe Salem is familiar with Lee Jackson Field.Salem attended several University of Akron men's soccer games as a child and teenager and he rooted for the Zips.

I'll be out on Lee Jackson shovelingWhat happens when the first snow flake hits the ground and the NCAA moves the match to Tulsa? -
Haha and this ones pretty funny: " AKRON!!!!!!!!!!! "

That would be freakin awesome. Pack the Pouch
all the emails are saying they are expecting 4000+ in attendance for the game, which would absolutely SHATTER the record set last week. What do you think maximum capacity is now with the added seating? -
That makes sense, and I saw they had some of those little line gates to block off the sides. What do you think maximum capacity is now with the added seating?
That is the impression I am getting too. My guess is that they won't take down the actual fence till the day of the game to prevent anyone from getting onto the field and messing it up.
the email stated they are removing the fence temporarily, so the view shouldn't be any worse than behind the other goal... just from bleachers.I'll get some pictures in a little while, but so far theyve brought in 2 portable bleachers (they go about 6 rows high each) and appear to have room for 2 more. The blue tarp is off the fence, although I am not convinced the view is going to be very pretty from hehind it. -
And so it begins: "Akron"

Let's just make sure we try something as creative as this...
and put me down in favor of the kangaroo head.

That's still very good news, though I love seeing the people sitting in trees. Maybe we'll see some people bring ladders? I wonder if they'll try to keep student out of the west SRO side. hmm..wait.. maybe we should just get a new soccer stadium?So.... a little bit of an update on tickets. The game is probably going to sell out tomorrow. I got my ticket tonight and I was forced to get the SRO ticket as everything else was sold out. The SRO ticket, however, isnt for the grass hill east of the field... Oh no... this ticket is for behind the west goal. Akron's way of getting fans able to watch the game behind the west goal? Take down the blue tarp behind the west goal, fence off the entrances to the walkway, and charge $5 to stand behind the field's fence and watch the game. Kinda pathetic, if you ask me... tho I still bought it so I can at least be there. Ill try to get a regular ticket via the AK-ROWDIES, but I didnt want to take any chances with that. Please Akron.... when you build the new stadium... put a grass hill behind the west Goal. This whole turning away fans thing is no good (or is it great)
