Dambrot says 'yes' to Duquesne this time
Spin replied to GeorgeThomasABJ's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Like you made Akron relevant? Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. -
I spent a lot of money on the athletics program while I was in college at Akron. I also spent a lot of money on a lot of other things that (unlike sports) I never used. I never bowled or played pool at the bowling alley, never attended anything at the EJT except my graduation, or the theater, hundreds of other programs and clubs and activities I never had an interest in. I'm not complaining. Go Zips!!! Where I do feel like I was was the book store. Mandatory books, with new editions released every year (with miniscule changes or updates) so they wouldn't buy them back, which that nobody had time to crack. Someone needs to do an article on that money grab.

That doesn't happen by bickering among people who could spearhead that effort over the details. -

For one thing, Channel 3 "news" keeps bringing it up like it's breaking news that he's leaving. -
Zips at Texas-Arlington — NIT Round 2 (Mon 8 pm)
Spin replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Very good post. We as alumni/fans can get delusions of grandeur, wanting better facilities, better conferences, and tournament runs. The reality is, we're not tOSU. Like the old saying, "it is what it is". We have high expectations for the programs, but they don't have the budget. The legacy. The fan base, being stuck in Buckeyeland. Maybe instead of criticizing the Zips for playing so good in a "weak" conference, we should enjoy the ride against similar programs. Be comfortable in our own skin. Maybe it's time for some honest soul searching. -
Geez sorry to hear that. Hopefully they have different mgmt with the new team.

Akron Zips v Kent State Golden Flashes: The MAC Championship
Spin replied to NWAkron's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Let's ask Cavs fans... -
Well they should get rid of softball too. Too bad equality only works one way. Which is obvious if you look at the two ball parks. Something should have been done for northern college baseball years ago. Start the season later, end it later, no out-of-state non-conference games, forget the dream of "making it big someday" (being Superregional fodder to some southern school that has a bigger baseball scouting and recruiting staff than your entire university). A tough pill to swallow I guess, until you become the next CSU/Akron. At least we still have club baseball. In some ways it (like club hockey) is more fun than the sanctioned college programs.

Akron Zips v Kent State Golden Flashes: The MAC Championship

Understood. Times like this I wonder if we need a new one. I hope I'm wrong but I don't see us getting back to the MACC next year. -
How much does it cost the University to send the team travelling to another game which could be God knows where? Travel, lodging, etc. Then if you win, you go somewhere else. Meanwhile a lot of the fans are back home watching the real Tournament, or Cavs, or Indians spring training games. meh

Akron Zips v Kent State Golden Flashes: The MAC Championship
Spin replied to NWAkron's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
That's on the team, more than its on us. They raise our expectations every season. On February 17, we were 22-4 12-1. They crap their pants against Kent and went 4-4 against conference opponents when it mattered. The "one game" thing is what we get in college basketball. I don't like it, but that's how it is. You play 30+ games then the post-season is one game series'. Although, with the late season collapse, could the Zips have won a series against the Golden Flushes? Year after year it's the same northeast Ohio "good enough but can't close the deal" BS. -

For this? -
On the one hand, we have been to nine MAC championship games under Coach Dambrot. On the other, we lost 6 of them.

I'm sick of watching this team blow chunks when it matters. All we accomplished this year means nothing. NOTHING. Now we get to watch Kent State celebrate. I don't think it would bother me a bit if the program made some changes. -

You'd think Akron is the team who played one more game this week... -

Agreed. That was a heck of a round, back and forth in both games. A very sad ending for Evan though, he'll rebound. His center backs didn't quite match Toronto's high level of play. I made a joke on social media about this MLS Cup being between two teams from outside the USA. Some people got that. -
I understand some enjoy trying to keep up with the Joneses (even when they're pulling a quarter billion dollars a year from their conference networks and other TV deals, not counting bowl money). While at the same time complaining about local sports fans and students not taking the athletics seriously. Especially when the students are paying a little over a thousand bucks in student fees to maintain this FBS-but-not-FBS status. Never getting more than one seed in the 68 team March Madness. It's a paradox. Not just for Akron or just the MAC, but for programs in the CUSA, SBC, AAC, MWC, and the ashes of the WAC. Talk of another level of play including those conferences was discussed as an answer. Not FCS or D2, but not eating the scraps of the Ohio States and their $100,000,000.00 budgets. Just thinking out loud. Not that it'll ever happen. And the complaints will go on that nobody takes us seriously. Fans, students, media. The football power 5, the basketball selection committee. Crap I don't have to listen to at Canal Park or MiLB forums. I continue to support my alma mater, hoping someday the MAC can get an at-large big in the basketball tourney, and/or an 8 team football playoff including the top ranked G5 program. But all the whining and complaining about both ends at once gets tiring.

I-AA was brought up several times in the past but everybody raised holy hell about "dropping back". Now GP1 is gone and I'm not going there again, just sitting here watchin'.
-
Yep, it's been brought up several times in the past. As was G5 playing in the spring. The bottom line is the G5 pays for a significant number of scholarships with those away games at OSU, Mich, MSU, ND, etc. And coaching salaries. Lose those games, and you lose schollys, staff, and you're Youngstown State. Best case scenario IMO is if the NCAA expands the playoffs to eight teams, puts the P5 conference winners in, two at-large programs, and the top ranked G5 program. Get the top G5 schools to play each other in non-conference games (late in the season?). That's going to be hard to predict because whenever a G5 school gets ranked, a P5 school poaches their HC.
