  1. The perception of the general public is what I'm worried about.
  2. That'll work. Trendy but not overly obnoxious.
  3. I'd rather do that than "rebranding" as a technical institute.
  4. Man, streaming (or attempting to) is just a huge waste of money. I don't think I have ever gone 20 minutes without it dropping out, and tonight it's completely worthless.
  5. I had a choice when I went back to school, to build on my AD in Electronics and my medical experience by going into the Biomedical Engineering, or going into Nursing. Both are in demand. I went into Nursing (despite how competitive it was to get in, and how demanding the program is) because there simply wasn't many (any?) positions in Ohio for Biomed. I would have to move far away. Is changing the name of a major university going to change that? Will that generate tech jobs in the Midwest? Will it spawn innovation in the Rust Belt? I chose Akron's program despite being accepted into several other programs because it was part of a major university. And I paid a high price for that name on my degree, compared to other programs. And I graduated from the College of Nursing just in time as the program was "merged" into a bunch of others into the "College of Health Professions". Now, the University is rebranding itself as "polytechnic". You have to understand how nurses are viewed by where they went to school. Especially in the interview. As I said this is a field with great demand. Local demand. Most of us were working within a week of licensure. I doubled my income on that day. Not to brag, but to illustrate the University is filling a great local need with professionals that are not in the tech field. And a lot of prospective students will choose to go elsewhere. There's a lot to be said for going to a College of Nursing at a major university. And a ot to be said by going to "health professionals" college at a technical school. While spending multiples of what you would pay at XYZ Community College or Bryant and Stratton. It shows employers and co-workers that you do not have the critical thinking and cultural background you get at a university. Or that you couldn't get into a university's program. Ironically, Akron Institute renamed itself Herzig University. The University of Akron is going in the other direction.
  6. I didn't see it posted here
  7. From the FaceBook page
  8. Who the hell hired him, anyway?
  9. Right. To do it right, it has to be a truly multi-use facility, and a marketing campaign showing a wide variety of uses for it. Concerts, shows, minor league sports, and college basketball (not necessarily the Akron Zips, for the reasons stated above). Being one of the largest cities in the country that has no real TV stations, that's not going to be an easy sell. I still think a joint effort between the U and the city to build on the edge of campus (along multi-lane E. Market or E Exchange) would be best. And an easier sell to the public. You already have the parking infrastructure (with the U collecting the fees), the U gets looks and more people see it's not just a community college... But we've beat that horse to death on other threads. Right now I'm just breathing a sigh of relief that Scarborough Fair decided not to (I MEAN "never said he would") rename the whole university.
  10. You must have graduated with a degree in a technical field. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's a kick in the balls to everyone else. Would polymer engineers like it if their school was renamed "Ohio Medical Institute"? The University of Akron is so much more than tech. This is yet another example of not improving the image of the University as a whole, or all of the different things it is to different people. Just one more example (in a long history) of selling itself short. We're talking about a major university with a severe image problem shooting itself in the foot, If this bullshit goes through I'm putting my degree in a fire proof safe deposit box because I want no part of being a grad of the "College of Health Professions" from "Ohio Tech". Not when I'm going up against grads of the "College of Nursing" from "The ________ University".. And don't think that won't come into play when I go back for my Masters somewhere.
  11. Yes there is an "Ohio Tech" already. Great place if you want to be a mechanic. http://www.ohiotech.edu/ That's the one in the abandoned Randall Park Mall. "Ploytechnic" is synonymous with "Institute of Technology". I "graduated" from the National Institute of Technology back in the 80's and a few years later (making $16,000) I became an EMT after three months of part time training and made more. I got your "Institute" right here,
  12. Horrible idea. "Ploytechnic"???? What in the hell is that??? As an alum (and in the last graduating class) of the College of Nursing before it was cheapened down with a bunch of other crap into the College of Health Professions, now they want to make the whole university "polytechnic"??? Screw him and the horse he rode in on. Does he know the employment rate of 6 month graduates from the College of Nursing (or whatever the hell it is now)? LOCAL employment? Or how competitive entry into the program is? Why would you want to cheapen the name further by asking prospective nursing students to "come to our Polytechnic." "Uhhh, hold on. I have North Central Tech on the other line and they're half the cost." It's ironic "Akron Institute has renamed itseld Herzig UNIVERSITY, while Akron U is going in the other direction. Think small, Be small
  13. I don't know how many are keeping up with the Zips this season but we're currently tied for the East Division lead with Portage County at 9-6. They're 21-16 overall and we're 18-19. We have a busy week this week, travelling to Ohio this weekend for a 3 game series then host Malone on Tuesday night, before travelling to YSU Thursday night,. There's still about a month to go in the season, ending up with three "home" games against Can't. BTW CMU has a 3 game lead in the West at 12-3.
  14. Tough schedule, I like it. Is it just me or are we playing fewer games this year than in the past?
  15. I've been to a couple semi-pro games and they don't draw many people besides friends and relatives. One was at Copley High School. and one played in a park. So I wonder why they chose such a big stadium, and one that has no seating or anything else left. Maybe it was cheaper than renting a high school stadium. Unless they do some work to it, I'm not going back there. I want to remember it for how it was, not sit in the rotting dump it has become since the Zips moved out.
  16. We couldn't land a minor league team, but there is football to be played at the Rubber Bowl yet in the form of semi-pro football. http://summitcountystorm.org/ http://summitcountystorm.org/home-stadium http://www.thepafl.com/?hc_location=ufi That should pay the rent...
  17. If you're looking for the ballgame on MACVision today, it's snowed out. It will be a double header tomorrow, and with MACVision here all weekend both should be on.
  18. We could take a cue from Ohio State and rename ourselves THE University of Akron. And like the Browns make our helmets oranger errrrr bluer.
  19. I wonder if baseball will move their starting time to go after the scrimage. Then the soccer game in the evening. That was a really nice day last year, we wound up watching four sports within a few hours.
  20. A-greed. Everybody wants to play big boy Division freaking I sports with the big boys, but are satisfied with what we have now. When we compare facilities with other DI schools IN OUR CONFERENCE ours look like a playground/gym. But if someone suggests we should play to our level, they start a lynch mob. Do you want to be DI or not? If you do, we need a D1 AD who will bring our shit (at least) up to MAC standards.
  21. think small be small
  22. I would be interested in hearing someone else (or everyone else) grading TW on the five areas listed in the job description I found. It might not be UA's job description, but worth discussing IMO if we're going to judge his performance. hiring coaches (and retaining coaches) scheduling budget preparation (not much we can talk about without real numbers) promotion (or lack of) facility management
  23. So you take a shot at me and then claim to not give a shit about what we're talking about. Priceless. More like classless, but that's why I'm not a regular here anymore.
