A good record helps in recruiting, but its really not the key. If that were the case, no losing team would ever get a good recruiting class. Also, if winning was the thing that mattered most, why didn't we build off of our MAC championship and bowl game? I have always agreed with hockey coach Herb Brooks mindset of you don't just look for the best ones, you look for the right ones. We need to give Ianello more than one season before we start saying he was a bad hire. Let's see what happens now that the guys know his system and expectations.

I agree. I was really glad to hear about the improvements in the classroom. All of the off the field stuff seems to be heading in the right direction, hopefully it translates on the field sooner rather than later.

DIG beat me to the punch! Tom Lemming has been doing this for a long time and is very well respected. If he says Ianello did a strong job with the incoming class, I tend to believe it. I think coach mentioned in the press conference yesterday that 34 kids made official visits to campus and they signed 23. I think that means they were able to close the deal pretty well. I'm excited, but we have to wait and see if it translates to the field in the fall.

Very glad to hear that. Thanks for following up and getting some answers. There seems to have been a lot of bad information hitting this site in the past year or so. It's unfortunate, but that's the way it goes on the internet. Hopefully, we can keep sorting this stuff out. Thanks again!

In his end of season press conference, coach mentioned O.Wilson as somebody who can step in for Sewell next season. Probably just an error on the roster.

Not sure on Petrides, but there has been a guy on the sidelines every home game wearing a #92 jersey w/no pads. It could be that he's sitting out the season for some reason, or it could be a walk-on that took his number. Don't know why he wouldn't be listed on the roster, but they haven't exactly kept that up to date this year. Last I looked Bowers was still listed...

Plus, Nate Linhart is in the Erie camp as a free agent tryout invitee. A long shot, but it would be cool to have both Linhart and Conyers make the team.

It should be available to you right away. I have Time Warner and ESPN3 works for me. I just happen to click on the scores yesterday and a box popped up and listed some games that I could now watch.

GoZips.com Goes All-Out to Promote Syracuse Game
Roo2 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
The correct roster is included in the game notes now. -
Potts and Schrock are on the actual roster, but I think D'Orazio is going to enroll in January. Billy Harmon played in the scrimmage, but I don't see him on the roster. The new game notes are available now, as well. Interesting that Gary Pride is listed ahead of Carter on the depth chart. R.Hall is the starting TE.

Completely agreed. It's not like Ianello based an entire recruiting class on "50-50 chances" like ole JD did his first few seasons. It's one kid out of 25, and why not take the chance? If he gets here and on the field, SCORE! If not, we've lost one scholarship out of 25 that probably otherwise would've went to a kid that would've had a 50-50 chance of ever being an impact player anyways. I'm all about us taking one "chance" a year on getting a talent like this, so long as it doesn't slip back into JD Brookhart "Best Recruiting Class in the MAC" mode. Exactly. This kind of thing happens every year to some of the Zips recruits, the only difference this year is that the player is openly talking about it. I don't really like the way Howard has gone about handling this thing, but I do respect the fact that he's being honest about the situation. Everybody knows where they stand.

It's possible that the choice has already been made, but they are going to wait until after the soccer games this weekend to make the announcement. I could see them holding off out of respect to Porter and the team. Why take any focus/attention off of what the soccer team is doing? I could be totally wrong, but it would be the right thing to do, especially since we may have to fight to keep Caleb from leaving after the season. Just a thought.

I saw him on the sidelines in street clothes last week. I guess he was redshirted, so he should be good to go next season.
-
That's good information. We could use a ball-hawking safety, ala the one we'll see in the "other blue and gold" tomorrow.Did you recognize the name of Zach's opposing coach? He should be familiar to Zip fans.I thought so. Matt was a fullback, right?

"small" might be an understatement. This might turn into something huge.I will go on record as saying it will NOT turn into anything huge. Because it is not. Take that to the bank.If you want to sell papers or generate "hits" you create yourself a nice headline that infers a kid was given money, a hooker, etc. ZipsNation doesn't need to sell newspapers, and we get no income from the number of "hits" our site generates, so we have the ability to keep the hyperbole to a minimum...zero if we so choose. The violation of which Coach Ferri was accused is, based upon my research, considered a "secondary violation" by the NCAA. Penalties range from absolutely nothing, to loss of a car trip or two for recruiting this fall. That's it. And those allegations remain unproven/under investigation at this time.If Ferri stepped down, he did what he felt was best for himself and his family. It is as simple as that. He busted his ass for The University of Akron for 6 years. It bothers me tremendously that this is the way it closes for him. He deserved better.Like it or not, this has become a headline society. Some people will only look at the tickers scrolling across the bottom of the screen, read the headlines, and make judgments based on that. Perception is reality most of the time, so this is a problem for the Zips. People will see things like "recruiting violation" and "coach resigns" and run with it. Whether it's deserved or not, this will cause a problem for the Zips and JD's tenure as coach in the public eye. This season was supposed to be all positive, but that changed in a very short period of time. Of course, the good thing about a headline driven society is that a few wins in the next couple of weeks will swing things back the other way.

I don't know about that. Off the top of my head, I can think of Frye, Hixon, Biggs, Arthur, Blackburn, Getsy, etc. There are many that dont disappear as seniors.

A new quarterbacks first start is against a Big Ten team with a solid defense in a game that he didn't even dream he'd be playing in until the day before. He's probably taken one practice worth of snaps with the 1st string. Maybe the problem is NO Akron FAN should be booing ANY Akron player, especially a quarterback thrown into those circumstances, unless they did something to warrant suspension for the rest of the season and put the team in a very tight spot. Anyone who cared about Akron sports would've told you to shut up....and anyone who cares about seeing Akron fielding a winner would boo excessively poor QB play. No, you couldn't be more wrong. Anyone with a clue would not boo a kid being thrown into his first start against a B10 team. That shows no class at all.
-
Wow, that's a stunning development! Man, I would hate to have to burn Nicely's redshirt for one game, but he has to be the backup, right? I guess the big question is determining how long the suspension is actually going to last. Not what we needed the night before this game, that's for sure.

I haven't seen any injury reports for the Indiana game. Are Bruce, Martin, and Torrence going to be able to play? There were a few other guys that were banged up, too. Martin looked pretty down on the sidelines, and I didnt see Bruce ever come back to the field. We have a chance for something big this week, so I hope the Zips can be close to full strength!
-
Yep, there were a ton on the field before the game. I think JD said in his press conference yesterday that there were 45 recruits at the game. I'm sure there will be a big amount at the Indiana game, as well. I have to believe that experience will get some of those guys to commit pretty quickly.
-
While I agree there have to be some expectations that are met, let's not get too crazy here. All those involved with game can do their very best and still have some problems on Saturday. There will probably be things that pop up that weren't expected. There always are with anything on its opening day. And I don't care how much experience the workers have, some of them (maybe most) will not be totally prepared for the rush of 30,000 people showing up. Mistakes will be made. Let's just be understanding and respectful and enjoy the day for what it is. The first day in a new era of Zips football!

The University of Akron Zips vs Morgan State Bears
Roo2 replied to RowdyZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
If Matt Rodgers gets serious playing time and does well, the Info could be dubbed "Mister Rodgers Neighborhood." Though, that may not be the intimidating presence we're looking for... -
Any updates on Tonga and Henderson? Our defense could be really good with those guys.
