You do realize they were only an FBS starting in 2000 right? so your points wan an FCS team that moved up was a doormat from 2000-2006? 2007 5-3 conference 2008 5-3 conference 2009 3-5 conference Now UB may fall back to six years of doormat status but I really doubt it... And if they do it will have nothing to do with the fact our non-conf is hard.. It is hard to argue with numbers. I thought I was the only one having trouble understanding that. The non-conf schedule has nothing to do with MAC record.

The schedule they have MAY help speed their return to doormat status ALTHOUGH THEY WILL GET THERE ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. so wha you are saying is that they will be the mac doormat soon but the schedule they have (big east and acc foes) will have little or nothing to do with their status as doormat of the mac? That makes sense.

  5. A MAC team must play BCS teams whenever possible to accomplish institutional goals, help the team budget, and keep the cellar door open. Not playing BCS teams kills the one advantage that MAC teams have over FCS teams. The opportunity for players to play and be measured against top level BCS talent far outweighs their desire to play in low level money pit bowl games. Playing mid-level BCS schools also keeps the door open for the program to grow. Boise, USF, and other smaller programs clawed their way out of the cellar by playing and competing with “superior” teams. Akron could have a top 10 team and never know it because they only played other bottom feeders. Scheduling up helps to send a message to that players that 8 wins means you are a good MAC team and will probably go bowling. 10 wins means you are a good MAC team and will probably go bowling. Who cares if Akron or Buffalo starts out with a couple of losses. Losing early might help the team realize that they have to play together as a team and that they have room for improvement. Competition with BCS teams is not often fair but is the single biggest asset that lower level FBS teams can utilize. Fill the coffers against BCS teams and expect to compete at the same time. You can have it both ways. That is the beauty of college football. Make a commitment to success and stick to it. Do not lower the teams expectations because you are afraid to lose a couple of games each year. The whole argument about splitting FBS football is un-American. Give each and every team a chance to take their piece of the pie through commitment, perseverance, and incremental change. Success just doesn’t happen overnight. Set a goal and get it done. No more crap about how the big boys are beating us up. Ask the players how they feel about stepping on the field with Penn State. I bet not one of them would turn down an opportunity to show their talent against one of the top programs in the country.

  7. I think a winning team would bring a lot to the game day experience. Bring in a good team to play there and the stadium will come alive. It is apparent that the team and fan base lack a true identity. Most of the fans at games last season were there to see the stadium first and the games second. It will take time for the fan base to develop with the team. The Info game day experience will improve as the Football program becomes more mainstream and the fan base becomes comfortable being Zips fans. It will take some time. I get a similar feeling at Aeros games. All of the fans are there to watch a baseball game or just be out in the nice weather. Few fans actually follow the team and/or really care what happens during the course of the game. I think our football program is different because they are technically part of the highest level of college football (FBS). The Aeros will never be on the same field as the Yankees or Redsox but you can see the zips play OSU and other big time programs. The info as a facility bigger and more advanced than the team that plays in it right now. The team will grow into its new home just give it some time.

  9. Just so you know, ISP is in charge of getting ads on the score board, not marketing the games. The site made it seem like more. I guess their scope is narrower than I had thought. So who is the man/woman at the reins of the Akron marketing campaign?

  11. The two Jokers running Akron's ISP team. I can't imagine how their career experience listed in the Bio was enough to get an assistant job much less a lead role.
  12. Getting local families to the game should be a top priority. There was a family sitting behind me at the Spring Game (2 adults 4 kids). The father was really interested in the game as were the kids. He did not attend college and was obviously not raking in the money. During the course of the game he had some questions about the players and team dynamics. In the course of our conversation he told me that they would love an opportunity to come down and see a game but could not afford to do so. Athletic events are an interesting opportunity for the University to make contact with the general public. It is an opportunity to let them know and see how the U is changing for the better. The Info is a jewel of a stadium and should serve as a symbol for the continued reshaping of the campus and academic prowess offered locally. Getting people in the door has as much to do with community/regional support as it has to do with the bottom line. People take their families to the Aeros game because it is a fun, convenient, and inexpensive family activity. Akron is fertile ground in which to grow a loyal fan base. I moved to Akron from Can't about 4 years ago. I love what the city is and where I believe it is going. Akron has much to be proud of and should embrace the city in addition to alumni. Most college football fans are not college graduates.

  14. Re-fixed. Do you really think that, if "Buck-a-Roo" nights appear next season, it's because some UA person took in a Pittsburgh Pirates' game? No kidding - Everyone does "Dollar Night." YSU does it. The Aeros do it. I'm sure the Milwaukee Bucks do it too. The overall idea is hardly original. But - How many times has it been done at UA? Zero. How many times has ANYTHING of substance or success, Marketing-wise been done at Akron in the last 5 years? How many 3rd grade baton twirlers did you seen at the JAR this season? Hundreds. How many team jersey's were on sale at the team shop? Zero. What was your favorite promotion to fill the JAR this past season? For lack of any other choice, could it have been the "White Out?" How original was that one? How original was "Fear the Roo"? How successful were those two? People grouse about UA Marketing. But who offers a solution that would get thousands of fans to a game that would otherwise stay home? I did it. And not with a simple link to YSU's promotion. Or simply saying "Dollar Night." I laid it all out. Tied into the "Roo" thing and ready to go. For free in 20 minutes of my lunch time, with my hacker Photoshop skills. The idea costs almost nothing to execute, and can be used annually, easily becoming a tradition that people will place on their calendar. If 3k @ the JAR, or 5k @ InfoCision is cool with UA, they are free to ignore the idea. Band nights and baton twirlers always get Joe Akron off the couch, right? You bring up an interesting point about the 3rd grade twirlers and dancers. Why not use other teams, clubs, and groups already present on the campus for halftime entertainment. They could use the Steel Drum Band or people from other fine arts dance programs (probably the modern types) for increased fan interest and overall improved experience. I am sure there are many organizations affiliated with the University that would love an opportunity to show off their skills and talents at halftime. Hell new clubs could form to do just this type of stuff. The Athletics Department needs to work with the rest of the University more.

  23. I agree that traveling to most away games is not an option. It is great to be able to travel 2 or three times a year to away games. I also agree that bringing in UTEP, Houston, Tulane and So. Miss regularly as part of a conference schedule does little to draw interest from the ever elusive “Joe Akron”. I do believe however that scheduling some CUSA, Sunbelt, and WAC teams for home and homes would go far in confirming the MAC’s standing in the hierarchy of FBS football conferences. We might not be high right now either by perception or through years of self loathing. Playing only BCS nonconference games and MAC conference games does little to draw attention to the program. The MAC commissioner needs to get together with the commissioners of other non-BCS conferences to get the scheduling gates open. I believe that the top 5 teams would be competitive with the top 5 of C-USA, WAC, and Sun Belt. The MAC is the Big-10 of non-BCS conference. Winning some of the games would go a long way to gaining national credibility. National credibility based on consistent performance against comparable PROGRAMS (Funding, enrollment, fan base) is how we move up faster than a few big upsets spread over 10 years.
  24. Two words: HIGH SCHOOL! UA can do much better than this pathetic attempt at college entertainment. Where are the large scale events that attract thousands of UA students from all walks of life? Used to be that student programmers could attract 3,000 to 4,000 or more diversified students (dormies, commuters, surrounding neighborhood apartment dwellers, Greeks, Blacks, graduate students and undergraduate students, faculty and staff) all to a single big-time events on campus which made UA students feel more unified with a sense of identity and self-sustaining while supplementing the occasion with smaller events that appeal to an eclectic university market. What the Hell has happened to your school? It's no wonder apathy runs wild at The University of Akron. You nerds litigate for apathy at UA by the nature of your programming. It is designed to disintegrate and alienate the student body into miniscule pieces and parts. It is why the student body has virtually no power on that campus anymore. You have dissected yourselves down to the least common denominator. You remind me of an ant farm that has been turned upside down and shaken. I get the same impression when I read your horrible, horrible student newspaper, the Bungleight...blek! Get it together for Christ's sake. I know the potential is there. UA is growing in so many positive ways but when it comes to student oriented/authored events, you guys come off as students at a workshop for the developmentally disabled. You guys need to get off the short bus. Wow, really, as I recall from my time at school there was no campus unification, there was on campus and commuter. Over the last 10 years or so they have made huge leaps in getting commuters back on campus. Why are you on here again? He is on here to let us know: 1.) Nothing that campus programmers do will ever be as awesome as the events that he and his fellow campus leaders arranged 30 years ago. 2.) The University needs to be transplanted to virgin country so that nothing the University does is associated with the city.
