  1. He could have had the decency to take his team to the bowl game before he left. No class.

Sadly this has become the norm. Remember when Brian Kelly bailed on Cincy before their BCS bowl? It's sad, but this is the current state of college athletics. Coaches preach about how much they love their schools but are ready to ditch them the first chance they can.

I would like to think if we ever became competitive enough to play in a bowl game, Bowden would at least wait til the end of the season. But I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

  2. Well the easy thing to do is to blame the athletic department or the JAR design. I admit it's not the best, but I never used them as an excuse to miss a game. I went to as many games as I could during my college years but after my freshman year I chose not to sit with the Rowdies. The general feeling among the student population was that the section had declined for a variety of reasons. More that it was trying to be a clone of other school's sections and not unique to Akron.

  3. The quote from the Facebook account was

Doesn't get any more straightforward that that.

Does it say there will be no other seats available for students? NO. Does it say they can ONLY sit in section 11? No.

Pay attention, there is a response to that photo that I posted above.

It's no secret the layout of the JAR is terrible, and they are trying to make the best of a bad situation. Having seating in the lower bowl and section 11 is the best they can do in an attempt to unify the section.

  4. For some reason, the student section has been moved to section 11. There will be no students in the lower half of the arena.

The entire south end in the lower level is reserved for students this year and you don't have to be a Rowdies member to sit there. Overall the seating is improved from last year. Get there early and you'll have the best seats in the place, 5 feet from the court.
  5. Boise also outrebounded Creighton 31-18. Boise's only loss this season is to Michigan State by just 4 points, so they appear to be a cut above average.

You have to consider who they played as well. Creighton is the only team they have beaten that has more than 2 wins. They are very average...

  6. The Big East is going after big markets. Houston, Dallas, Orlando, Philadelphia, and now New Orleans. I don't see how you'd rather play in Athens, OH or Ypsilanti, MI when we could have national exposure or at the least get outside of the cluster conference of Ohio and Michigan...

Cleveland-Akron is no smaller of a market than any of the ones the Big East is adding.

  7. You hit the nail on the head with how I often feel discussing the Zips. It's (one of) my (few) passions and I wish the Akron community would have more of a personal identity with UA instead of always looking to Cleveland and Columbus, but I often feel like a nut job bringing up the Zips, when OSU is always in national title consideration. Frustrating.

What frustrates me the most is that if you or I were to bring up the Zips, OSU fans would most likely make fun of us. But honestly what gives them the right? I'd rather sit and watch MY SCHOOL win 1 game a year, than act like them and claim to be a fan of a school they don't attend.

  8. It IS a sorry state of affairs, and very frustrating to those of us who have supported this program for years. I don't get it either.

And let me correct your math. If 5% of 20,000 students show up, that puts us at 1,000 students per game, and I don't think 1,000 students have even shown up for any single Akron basketball game other than Ken+ since the 80s.

As Slick Willy Clinton would say, "I feel your pain"

We have a program that shots itself in the foot every year. How much hype/optimism was there for this season? What did the team do? A terrible start losing to Coastal Carolina, and Ok State. While Ok State is a very good team, we should have beat them. Students and the public don't care that we should be 5-0 right now, they only care about the record. Soccer has show what students care about, winning, being on the national stage, national tournaments, national rankings, MAC tournament titles. Every year the season comes down to the MAC tournament and the students know that. You have to get people excited before they will show up and winning is all that matters. "Almost winning" doesn't mean crap!

Also remember the Zips have shown a pattern of winning a big game, then laying an egg at home. They unfortunately cannot seem to find a way to carry momentum for one game to another to get positive energy around the program.

  9. Peter King's top five college coaching candidates for NFL head coaching jobs, per chats with front office people in the last two weeks (in order):

    1. Chip Kelly, Oregon

    2. David Shaw, Stanford

    3. Brian Kelly, Notre Dame

    4. Kirk Ferentz, Iowa (even coming off the bad season at Iowa, he's well-respected in the NFL)

    5. Doug Marrone, Syracuse.

Didn't include Bill O'Brien of PSUe because I can't see him preaching love of, and loyalty to, PSU, and then leaving after 12 months.

Honestly I don't think any of them would really be successful in NFL.

  10. As I said, a step backward based on the ongoing methodical dismemberment of the Big East. No one knows where it's going to end for the Big East. There's no guarantee that it will continue to exist as a conference once the buzzards are done picking over the carcass.

Even at it's weakest state the Big East will be better than the MAC. Maybe compared to the Big10 and SEC, it is a joke but not to the MAC. People can note that they have added SMU, Memphis, and Houston. So? what has the MAC done, add UMass and kept schools like Eastern Michigan and only really relevant in Ohio and Michigan. People talk about national exposure, yet bash a conference that takes up the eastern US. Trust me "Joe Akron" isn't getting excited about a Saturday matchup against Eastern Michigan and we are NEVER going to a conference like the ACC or Big10. So unless you're content staying the MAC forever, the BE is our ceiling.

I suppose the best way to make everyone happy is take the best 16 or so teams from the Big East, CUSA, and MAC. Drop everyone else down to FCS and be done with it. I'm not just talking wins, but facilities, fanbases, and athletic depts as a whole.

Cincy, UConn, Houston, Memphis, UCF, Akron, Ohio, ECU, Buffalo, SMU, Louisville, USF, Temple, etc.
