  1. Honestly I'd say uniforms should be designed for players and recruits. As a fan, I don't really care as long as they win. Overall I think we should all approach this in that way, since at the end of the day the players are the one's wearing the jerseys.

I just wish the football team would get creative with our uniforms too. It's time for a fresh look!

  2. Although I posted earlier that it looks like it worked for tomorrow night, I'll still be interested to see if there is any lasting effect. Also, what is the effect of the LeBron bobble heads vs the Zips' current winning streak?

Whatever the case, I want our players to know that I show up to watch and support them, not because there's a chance that I can pick up a Lebron bobble head. I wish it was as easy to catch up with our basketball players after a game as it is our soccer players to thank them for their play. I guess I need to join the social media crowd so that I can tell them through twitter or something. I'd just prefer doing so in person and not just at the beginning or end of a season.

I will say that most of the basketball players seem to appreciate tweets from fans. I usually see Harney, Tree and Abreu re-tweeting a ton of stuff from fans before and after games. But like most athletes I don't expect them to respond to all of them, but I can guarantee they read them!

  3. Limited tickets remain

The opportunity to market an item in his image came about only when Coca-Cola and the University of Akron entered a partnership for the beginning of this school year, and marketing dollars from that deal made the purchase of the bobbleheads possible.

...hmm didn't people around here say it was dumb to use Lebron, and that the promotion wouldn't work?

  4. Yeah watching Savage Arena on TV last night, wasn't very impressed. Don't get me wrong it's better than the JAR, but I think UA can do much better. The capacity would be a good fit but I don't like the layout. It's asymmetrical and very strange, seems like 70-80% of the seats are on one side of the arena. Also seemed that most of the seating was on the same level, with the exception of suites/club, and barely any behind the hoops.

  5. I don't think we'll make the tournament, but I think Oregon would be a decent matchup. Beat them and you play NCState...

Just sucks that one slip up in the tournament and our season is over. Seems like most of last year we were picked to make the Tourney too. A poor shooting night, off game by refs, too much can go wrong. Not to mention the 5? straight appearances in the MAC Championship. If they were beating MAC teams by 10-20 points every night I'd be more optimistic. We are the team that everyone wants to beat and odds are definitely against the Zips...

  6. They hit a grand slam with the Info (I'll never get over Ianello ruining our football program at the most inopportune time). I'm sure the trustees would desire a similar "wow" factor when building a new arena. Many people in the community, myself included, really only have contact with UA through football & basketball (and soccer).

I feel the same way when relating a new arena to Infocision. When inside the stadium it definitely doesn't feel like 30,000, but rather MUCH bigger. When it was sold out the atmosphere rivaled any stadium I've ever been in. It's one of the nicest buildings in the country, and best in the MAC by a longshot. But in my opinion UA should be under pressure to make the arena just as nice, if not better. Outdoor stadiums are much different than arenas. Seating can be expanded fairly easily and renovations can be made if needed. When building an arena you have to get it right the first time. Mess it up, and UA will be stuck with inadequate arena in a few decades. Also arenas can be used all year round. While football stadiums in Ohio would only get use 5 months of the year. 7,000 is a happy medium for me. Not too big, not too small. I personally wanted 9-10,000, but it seems unrealistic at this moment. The key is the "wow" factor and big-time feel. Multiple levels, suites, close seating, and a nice big scoreboard at center court.

  7. As a student, I just want to throw out that having head Rowdies up top, as well as down low is a great idea. No leadership (unfortunately that is whats needed) is the reason I feel the top is usually uninvolved. I have, however, saw the top very much involved during Can't and OU games.

Agreed. I think that the best way to show that it is a unified section and encourage students to get involved. Just have to make sure they get a group of leaders up there, and not just one or two. I'll also add that my favorite year was when the Rowdies wore gold shirts, and maybe they could try that again. Way too many schools use blue these days and gold is much more unique. Not to mention most of the general Zips fans wear blue gear to games, so the Rowdies would stand out more. Similar to what Georgetown does with Grey and PennState with white.

  8. Here's my solution - for basketball, eliminate the AK-Rowdies. They are passionate fans, but it's just not working. Take section D or E and name it "Zips Zone", "Zips Nation", "The Pouch", or something referring to the section, not the group. This eliminates the notion that it is anything other than a place for ALL UA students, regardless of what shirt they are wearing. Entice students to sit there by offering a voucher for a free meal (pizza, hot dog, or burger and a pop). Offer discounts on other items as well. Have the cheerleaders interact with the student section more than ever before. More will listen to directives from an attractive 19 year old girl than a 26 year old male graduate student. Put them right behind the visitor's bench and see what happens. Put the band on one lower end, the dance team and prospective recruits on the other. It's time to get creative.

I think the name "Roo Zoo" works best. It's already been used and anything else is way too generic. The Ak-rowdies could still exist while the student section as a whole would be the Roo Zoo.

  9. Problem #2 will probably get me ripped but, again, I'm being brutally honest. The AK-Rowdies are not a "cool" group. It's a motley crew led by many who aren't even undergraduates anymore and are in their mid-to-late 20's. Like it or not, college kids care about the perception of groups they are associated with (think fraternities/sororities) and the AK-Rowdies are not considered cool.

This was exactly the problem when I was in school. Sat with the Rowdies for one basketball game as a freshman, and decided after that I would never again.

We have the best student section in the MAC, but it has a lot of room for improvement

  10. I have no interest in that either. I also have no interest in watching our usual crowd of 3,000 people in an arena with 7,000 empty seats. One is just as pathetic as the other. Maybe 4,500 people in an arena of 7,000 would be a good fit. We would only have to replace a little over half the seats every ten years and all of the seats every 20 years.

I agree that around 7000 would be perfect. When I hear "small arena" I tend to think of 4000 or below, which is what I thought you were suggesting. I think we would easily average over 4,000 in an arena that size. The "draw" of Infocision wore off because the team was so awful and almost painful to watch. A new arena draws fans, and winning basketball will make them come back. This is the main reason I think UA needs to hurry up and get something done while our program is at it's strongest.

  11. Good stuff Dave. The numbers are a lot lower than I thought they would be.

College basketball has been and increasingly becoming a made for TV sport. My evidence is NCAA Tournament games on the east coast start at prime time and carry past midnight making the experience miserable for the people at the game, but tolerable for those at home who might want to turn in early, at which point the west coast audience picks up.

If "exposure" matters, is it better to have your games on TV with a smaller packed arena, or a large half empty arena? Half empty arenas are Mickey Mouse and short sighted, which is whey athletic directors support such arenas. They don't care that the stadium sits half empty after it is built because they have already moved on to their next job. Smaller, loud, packed arenas with people enjoying a high level of play are great for TV and the exposure we want.

Sorry I have no interest in watching our zips play in a glorified high school gym on tv. There is nothing more embarrassing than a school like Akron building an arena of 3000.

  12. mcCarthy athletic center, built about 2005 for a small program called Gonzaga, holds just 6000. It serves their needs fine- they could use the 14000 seat Spokane arena if they wanted but they dont. It was built for 25million which they say translates into 35million in 2013 dollars. Not a palace but not a jar either!

Exactly my point. No big time program would have below 6000. And I agree with the other post about no decent mid-majors below 5000.

But hey 3000 at Akron is totally acceptable!
