Care for Some Holiday Gumbo or Jumbalaya?
johnnyzip84 replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
This seems to be a good time to remind people (who don't already have a passport) that IF the Zips happen to wind up in Toronto, then you might want to apply for a passport NOW if you plan on heading to the game. Many of you probably are aware that beginning Jan 1 of this year (2008), a passport is required for entry into Canada by any means. -

Why are you a Zips fan?

I can still hear the "lose some weight" taunts to Kerry Hammonds, the rotund center for Middle Tennessee I grew up in the Pittsburgh area, and rooted for Pitt growing up, although I was actually more of a general "college sports" fan than anything else then. When I came to UA in 1979 I was one of a very small number of "out of state" (2.5X the tuition) students, other than the select athletes on scholly like Vernon Stewart etc. I guess I always felt like you should, as the Beach Boys said, "be true to your school" and I started attending Zip football and basketball games (my Uncle, an OU grad, was friends with long ago hoops coach Ken Cunningham) right from the start. I have followed the sports teams pretty closely ever since. I guess you could say that I'm stuck on them at this point -
You know, I hadn't even thought about this until now, but has DK played himself into getting any attention from the NFL? He has always been a pretty "complete" (if not eye-catching, until the last three games anyway) back in terms of running running, blocking and receiving. Maybe with the opportunity that has fallen his way (being the featured back), DK has looked at this as a chance to show something to everyone, including the scouts? Who knows, maybe the coaching staff was intrumental in DK looking at it this way.If he keeps playing like for the rest of the season, perhaps being a late round draft choice is not out of the question. At worst case, a free agency deal should be there. He may have already earned that.

DK is obviously on a role, and he's performing in many different manners. His running and pass catching were both outstanding last night. The one thing that I find pretty amazing is that he's still playing on the kickoff coverage team (which did a fine job last night, BTW, aided greatly by Bronco's much higher kicks).

Awesome find RowdyZip! I want to party with this guy next year when the Zips return to Syracuse

VERY interesting projection, most of the site had me laughing. Clemson is left out of a bowl at 7-5? Is this site run by Can't grads?Actually I think they have Clemson on the "Smurf Turf" of the Humanitarian Bowl. -
I know this is way too early to even think about, but I found a site that has us projected to play the UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns in the Indepedence Bowl. Of course, they also have 6 MAC teams in bowls.Link

It's a good thing, skip-zip. Both of us old timers might have been hurt "storming the field" otherwise!

I'll acknowledge that the 1st thing I should have written today, was "congratulations" to the team and the staff on winning a very key game in pretty nice fashion. You guys are correct about that. However, I still believe that the team will need to play BETTER to defeat Buffalo. I don't necessarily see that as "doom and gloom". And I believe the Zips CAN beat UB. But I think the D will have to play more CONSISTENT for this to happen. That's all.Go Zips!!!! Let's clinch the New York division of the Big Mac conference

I just saw ESPN's plays of the day, and Lemon's exciting (and more importantly, momentum stopping) return was 2nd on their list. Shawn really has some wheels for a DE, don't you all agree on that? I really think this was a key play in the game. It was akin to a setup pitcher in baseball coming in to stop the 6th inning rally. It was a blast to watch, too When he was bending his way around and out of the end zone, his speed was such that I thought he was BWill for a second or two!
-
Seems he was suspended for one game by Mack Rhoades for not attending class.Anyways, I don't think we can win next week unless the defense stops blowing leads.Agreed! The D was like paper in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Regardless of how well the O-Line plays (and they have been awesome lately.....even the SNAPS were good last night!) Buffalo is too good and they will win next week unless our D plays better. The good news is the 4 man front, with Sewell joining Lively in the middle, was pretty good against the run. Now if the pass D can make a few tweaks to improve, maybe the Zips will finish strong.

I hope guys like Bowser, Kennedy, Jones, Jacq, BWill, Grant, Sewell, Lemon, Carter, The Entire O-Line, etc. read this.I juss emailed that to bowser to show to his fellow teammates....Thanks js! I'd love to see them come out hungry tonight.

The Leakin actually has TWO stories on tonight's game. The 1st covers the Zips "second season" while the 2nd discusses UT RB Morgan Williams from Canton McKinley.1st Link2nd Link

It's nice to see Jamie doing this kind of work. He was definitely underutilized on the field while he was here at UA. I think it was because LO was "in love" with that odd-looking, cross buck, misdirection play they ran for Chris Rooney all the time. To be fair, that play was somehow pretty effective.
-
This is all very plausable, Cap'n But an alternate ending has skip-zip and I tripping over EACH OTHER while storming the field.I don't have any logical reason to feel this way, especially given how the West is Best and the Rockets have owned us since that wonderful FG, but I have a strong hunch of a Zip blowout. Call me crazy, but I'm going to predict:Zips 45Rockets 10

You're on it, zipseuph. They were called the Akron Pros (see Link) and they did win the first NFL championship in 1920, but folded after the 1926 season (14 years before the Rubber Bowl was opened).Link

UB up 21-10 now a few minutes before halftime. How hot is that seat in Oxford (or is it a cradle?) getting for Shane Montgomery?
-
I guess I am unfamiliar with this team. If I was mistaken by calling the Vulcans the only pro team to call the Rubber Bowl home, I apologize. I'd like to hear more about them
-
I mentioned this on previous thread on this topic, but will repeat, I am the proud holder of three tickets to the fifth game of the year. I figure they will be honored when the team comes back to town. When the Vulcans come back, you can wear this 1968 Akron Vulcans T-shirt
-
skip, it's true that Alcorn was THE LAST pick in the '92 draft and that's why he was so "honored". That year's team was talented as I recall, but just couldn't do anything in a crucial home loss to BUGS, dooming any real shot of 1st year MAC glory. Ahhh the good old days....well you know the truth about them and it's why we can appreciate this year's team all the more. I just hope they come to play tomorrow night.
-
Perhaps we need to "pass the hat" and bid for a "Mr. Irrelevant" trophy on eBay in honor of UA's very own Mr. Irrelevant XVIII, Daron Alcorn, whose 56 yard FG was the difference the last time UA defeated UT.
