Who is going to the OU game this Sat?
johnnyzip84 replied to bUAkronG's topic in Akron Zips Football
Nah, I'm too numb from the incompetence of these guys. I feel like going is a punishment, honestly.77 is the way to go, even with the Lancaster bypass. Seriously. I've done that drive too many times,So I know you guys have been battling injuries all year, and I'm wondering if this has deflected any possible criticism/disatisfaction with Solich. Is he feeling any heat from the OU fans? Obvously a win over the Zips would help his cause, and I'm expecting a very difficult game. -
Looked like the Akron faithful by leaving early...At least they all rushed back in.... Good observation, Zips Win! If that had happened at the Rubber Bowl, the yellow jackets would have made them all buy new tickets!

For some reason, it took forever for this page to load for me but it sure is a nice story and I love the pic of Zeke slamming I placed the "sour grapes" comment here for anyone else who may be experiencing technical difficulty.Ansovald (11/19/2008 at 7:03 PM) Report Violation Why didnt Derrick Rose, OJ Mayo, Greg Oden go to Akron or Rider? Because they are really good, this guy is not. I think that you just had a deadline for a story or something and you made one up. Is Ansovald a Pitt fan or a Can't fan?

I think LeFevour deserves a look, but I believe Nate Davis' game translates better to the NFL. Since these guys are both Juniors, is there any chance for either or both to come out early?

Brian Kelly Top Choice for Tennessee?
johnnyzip84 replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
The suggestions of Butch Jones (CMU) and Brady Hoke (Ball St.) make sense to me. But the Navy coach and Utah coach I believe are long shots. In fact, I'll just say that there is no way Kyle Whittingham, a BYU graduate and practicing Mormon, would leave Utah for Cincy. Even from a purely financial standpoint, he would likely consider it to be a sideways move at best and I agree. Just because Cincy is in a BCS conference, doesn't mean the HC job there is better than at Utah. It's pretty obvious that the Mountain West is every bit as good as the Big East, and that isn't likely to change. And I think if you compare Utah's facilities, fan base, growth opportunity to UC's, Utah probably is better and certainly is equal to UC.Navy's coach, Ken Niumatalolo, is a little harder to peg (although interestingly he is also a Mormon). I believe the things going against him are that he only has one year of HC experience. The bigger issue is that he has only been associated with the option offense (so beloved by the academies) during his coaching career. I don't see that as an asset at a school like UC that aspires for the "big time". True, Paul Johnson has worked the offense pretty well with Georgia Tech in a very weak ACC this year, but let's face it you are not likely to win any BCS (or FBS for that matter) conference with this offense, at least not on a consistent basis. -
Brian Kelly Top Choice for Tennessee?
johnnyzip84 replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
Kelly rubs me the wrong way too. But I don't think he left CMU before the bowl game. In fact, I'm pretty sure he not only was the head coach of CMU when they won the Motor City Bowl that year, he ALSO went on to lead UC to an International Bowl win a few weeks later. This gave him the odd distinction of leading two teams to bowl wins in the same season. This seems pretty fitting for his apparent ego. The SEC East is about as tough as it gets. Perhaps the Peter Principle will kick in, but I'm not sure I'd bet against that arrogant guy.Well, I guess I wasn't aware of that Cincy went to a bowl that year, but I know he ditched CMU before their bowl. I used to live near Flint, Mi and believe me, I heard all about it! Reagdless, I think that guy is a prick!I stand corrected. Kelly did leave CMU prior to the bowl, but he did coach UC to their bowl win. -

Wow, what a great atmosphere at this game. It looks awesome on TV. I can't help but get even more excited for the Info watching this game

thats embarassing...... and fitting! I think we might need to be careful about this one. When I was co-oping many years ago, I worked with an Akron grad who was 10 years or so older. He was reading the book about Paul Brown at the time, and he mentioned the part where the Tigers whipped Can't 47-0. However what I ALSO recall him mentioning is that Akron was scheduled to scrimmage the Tigers the following week, but upon hearing the results of the Can't massacre the Zips promptly cancelled their meeting  Those of you who may have read the book, please corroborate if you can. Either way, we can say that a Zip has always been smarter than a flush

No doubt, trimmy10. After all, my mother, sister, two brothers and various other relatives are still there and I visit them often :DI DO find the football facility comparison to be an interesting one though. Talk about totally different philosophies. Pitt HAS an aging, on-campus facility and decides to tear it down (granted, for a beautiful basketball facility) and move to a shared, off-campus venue, while UA HAS an aging off-campus facility that it decides to abandon for an new on-campus facility. FWIW, I have a lot more faith in the UA model over time.

uakronkid and trimmy10, you both have it exactly correct. I grew up in Pittsburgh (OK, it was a few years ago), rooted for thr Panthers as a kid and when I chose to attend Akron, I may as well have decided to go to Alaska-Fairbanks (no offense UAF fans). It makes no difference that BG beat them in football this year, Panther fans will NEVER respect the MAC in general and they seem to particularly take humor in Akron for some reason. I sure hope for a decent showing on Saturday, but it would be even sweeter to play them on a neutral court in the near future.

The Knoxville News-Sentinel is reporting that Brian Kelly is the top choice to replace Phil Fulmer as the Volunteer HC. My question is this. If this happens, is there ANY chance at all of Mike Thomas reaching upstate to a head coach he previously hired (Lee Adams' favorite HC) and offerring the Cincy job to JD? I realize that he had that opportunity previously (when he hired Kelly) and passed, but perhaps the way the Zips played the Bearcats tough this year may be a feather in JD's cap. Personally, I think it's a BIT of a long shot, but certainly not out of the question. What does everyone else think?

This may be the biggest regular season MAC game in the history of the conference. Because of another commitment, I'll only have a chance to see part of the game but it should be a good one indeed. I'll be very curious to see the size of the crowd in Mt. Pleasant.
-
Hey take a break there, Driver 8.......err I mean Cap'n Still no clues in this article as to what may have been bothering Coach Peele after the game. Perhaps it was just frustration with his young squad, something KD will no doubt have to face at least a few times this year.

Another plus regarding Cventinovic - he couldn't wait to play for Akron! I love that and that's one of reasons I'm with the others on this board who look forward to seeing Swiech get (earn) some time out on the floor. That's GREAT to hear about Nikola Well at least ONE Serbian export appears to have a bright future today (see link) Link

Who is going to the OU game this Sat?
johnnyzip84 replied to bUAkronG's topic in Akron Zips Football
I'll have to settle for Frenchy's call from his alma mater on Saturday. It looks like the Zips are 2.5 to 3 point favorites. I'd sure like to beat these guys down there. Even if it's only to get under O-Zoner's skin NCAA FB Odds --> Scroll Down -
Roberts showed me all I needed to see against Florida State in the NIT last year. He understands the game very well. He should be getting more and more PT.
-
Wow, now that makes this win even more impressive! What a statement, early in the season. It'd be great if they can take it to the traditional MAC powers like this.
-
Awe now that's a real shame. There's always next year!BTW, congrats on the D-II playoff victory over the "Screaming Eagles" last week Just one question. How did you manage to out-C-O-A-C-H these guys? -->

At least it's Urbana and not a conference hoops game. While the 5th seed may be a little bit of a slap in the face, I don't think it will really hurt the Zips chances of going all the way. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only way the Zips would have to play on the road is if both UA and MSU win two straight, and like a few others here I don't see the latter occuring. And as far as possibly playing Wake in the semis, well hey if you want to win it all you're probably going to have to face them at some point. At least it'll be on a neutral field if it occurs. It's an exciting time of the year!

Zips Opponent URI Giving Duke Fits
johnnyzip84 replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Duke escapes with a 3 point win 82-79 (and a few, expected I suppose, "questionable" calls), but URI is very good. -
I am currently watching Rhode Island playing Duke in front of the Cameron Crazees. The Rams are giving the Blue Devils all they can handle, and are up 71-68 with about 4 1/2 minutes to go. URI is both athletic and physical (with the HC's son Baron capable of shooting the lights out) and will be a handful in Kingston. They may be as difficult an opponent the Zips see all year, including Pitt on the road.Game is on ESPNU BTW.

Way to hang in there Socceroos against all of the elements! Go Zips!!!I watched Loyola (MD) lose their 1st game of the year to Fairfield in the MAAC championship this afternoon. I wasn't particularly impressed with either team. The announcers kept citing Loyola, St. John's and Wake Forest as being "teams to watch" in the NCAA tourney. They did mention Akron a few times, but didn't really show much of an awareness of the Zips. Here's hoping they'll be FORCED to become aware here very soon
