  1. TE Brian Slack of Hoban has given a solid verbal to the Sweaters. In a quick search, I could not find where UA had any interest in him (at least not on Rivals or Scout etc.). I hope he's not one of these local kids that comes back to haunt the Zips.Sporting News Link
  2. I was thinking the same thing . Lee, did you get into the kool-aid or something? That's a downright "rosy" prognostication for you Seriously, I think you have it just about right with your assessment. Cincy opens as a 10.5 point favorite, but I think the Zips have at least a "puncher's chance" in this one, but ONLY if JD and staff set the tone that they EXPECT to win this game. We all know that the Rubber Bowl can be the scene of some unexpected outcomes, and this has the feel of one of those to me. Injured or not, the defense is going to have to play a LOT of guys because of the Bearcat no-huddle and Kelly's willingness to "go for broke" given the opportunity. Jack needs to play solid and avoid the huge mistake. The WRs need to make plays and minimize the "dropsies". Finally, Stec and Igor are going to have to put in their finest games of the year to finish it off. It could make for some serious drama, and I can't wait. Go Zips!!!
  3. Perhaps JD (or is that Moorhead....I'm still confused from the ESPN Classic coverage.......or was that the O'Hoppy Ale?) felt that after watching Army on tape, the ONLY way we lose to them is by turning the ball over (fumbles, interceptions, AND on downs). I think that might explain the conservative offensive approach this past week, especially not going for it on 4th and short a couple of times. Of course, the playbook needs to be wide open this week for any chance against Cincy. I've said before that Bowser deserves a few "shots" downfield. Given the right situation, I think our OL can give Jack enough time for a few of these a game. I'm not sure that many secondaries can deal with Jones AND Bowser on simulataneous deep routes.Hey Cap'n, how about a short review/comment on the Ommegang Abbey Ale and Blue Point Toasted Lager? I saw a sign for the former at the Blue Tusk in Syracuse, and the name alone piqued my curiousity.
  4. Maybe we should all "pass the hat" and give g-mann17 a donation. It's the "grass roots" approach that seems to have more success sometimes. I'm also wondering about the head of the alumni group who does the welcoming at the door (I don't recall his name right now). Maybe he has an opinion/idea on what might be done.
  5. I'll be satisfied if we can whip UB at the venerable old lady in her swan song MDZip. That would be a sweet finish to an NY sweep! Hey, I think we all might need to bring brooms to that last game at the Bowl. 1st for the NY sweep. 2nd to sweep out the urinals so we can all haul one out for a souvenir
  6. Thanks for that perspective on OBC attendance, skip-zip. This was my 1st venture to OBC for one of these, and I was frankly surprised (like SeeTee) to see what I thought was a good turnout (especially with OSU playing at around the same time). If there were more for 'Cuse then great! Perhaps the later game time (3:30) may have helped with the crowd.....plus Syracuse is still a bigger name than Army, regardless of the recent Orange struggles. Also, I don't think there are any more TV road games, but I could be mistaken. Perhaps that means yesterday was the last event like this at OBC for the year? (I guess they COULD have them for the Toledo and Buffalo games, but what's the point in that).
  7. Tough call, but that how I'm choosing to take it! Imagine thinking that your FBS school should beat another FBS school 1000 out of 1000 times. This blows away 6-sigma! I hope we CRUSH the Orange on the return visit to the Info. Before they come here, we play them on the road again next season. We'll beat them again, no matter who they hire as a new coach. Thanks for the correction, uakronkid I guess I'll have to perform another sacrifice next year and hit Empire Brewing, Clark's Ale House and the incomparable Blue Tusk two years in a row!
  8. Tough call, but that how I'm choosing to take it! Imagine thinking that your FBS school should beat another FBS school 1000 out of 1000 times. This blows away 6-sigma! I hope we CRUSH the Orange on the return visit to the Info.
  9. Am watching ESPN gameday, and they (Jeremy Shaap) have a long feature on Syracuse. Lot's of footage on the Zips, but more looking down on us again. When the 'Cuse AD was asked how many times they should lose to UA in 1000 games, he said NONE!
  10. Excellent points MDZip. It's the NY connection that is the key here. Plus you get bonus points for your James Black reference. I know he was one of Dennison's 1000 yard TBs, but he will also be remembered as UA's "Mr. Universe" from that period as well
  11. The sampler is a good idea, BUT the one beer I would highly recommend that is NOT part of the sampler is the Akron Dopple Alt. It is between amber and dark in color, but it's not as heavy-bodied as this would suggest. It's has a nice, flavorful blend of hops and spices and goes down very smoothly. My wife, who typically stays away from darker beers, loves this one. It is considered one of OBC's "seasonals", so it won't be available for too much longer (I am guessing). I think they also have two other seasonals going right now, the Lock 3 Oktoberfest (have had it, not bad!), and something like Buckeye Blonde? They also have 6 they brew year-round. To read up on these, here is the link. I've had Verich's Gold (the lightest of their regular brews, but very flavorful nonetheless) and Steel Valley Stout (better than Guinness IMHO and on par with Murphy's or Beamish). Looking forward to seeing you all there Link
  12. That's the way to get the momentum going again boys! Now go get the Vikes on Sunday Link
  13. Hmmm I think I know what Will Farrell and Cheri Oteri would suggest......the Zips D-Line needs the PERFECT CHEER!
  14. J Stoudemire, are you the DT that commited a couple years ago but never played? If so, it's not too late... We could use more DT.Naw...............im bowsers brother LOL. thas y i said i may be a lil biased. You said you were BIG. You have any eligibility left? You may have heard, we keep losing DLs. We are so desperate, some of us are suggesting that we take a look at the male cheerleaders!
  15. I can't speak of the Gordon Larson years, but Zip offenses were run-dominated under both Dennison and Faust (with the possible exception of the two years of Mike Johnson at QB). There were a few standouts (Willie Davis and Pat Snow under Dennison, and Kenny Chapman under Faust are a few who come to mind), but I can't recall a deep and talented "corps" of receivers prior to Owens. Under LO, the trio of Irvin, Cherry, and Sparks are certainly notable, but (even considering the "drops" against Ball St.!) I'll still take this year's group if given the choice.
  16. I agree that the "go to" player in this crop of receivers is Bowser, BUT the things that makes this group so much better than last years is the threat that each of them MIGHT get the ball at any time. So while I would like to see #1 see a few more passes his way (especially a deep ball on occasion so he can use his overall athletic ability), I still want Jack to spread it around much like he has.
  17. Well, Temple DID win 35-7 at Army, but I generally agree with what you are saying. I'll add this, though. UB's offense is a "nice" MAC offense, with all the necessary weapons. They have a seasoned, accurate QB in Willy, and pounding and talented RB in Starks and an excellent WR is Roosevelt. It's their D that is pretty suspect. I look for a crazy Rubber Bowl finale later in the year. Temple seems to be the opposite, with a pretty nice D but an average offense. Like you say, lets let the season play itself out.
  18. I tend to agree with GP1 as far as 4 wins or less being a possible revised cutoff for JD this year. Before the season started I thought 5-7 would be borderline, but now I think if the team finished 5-7 or better he will be, and should be, the guy leading the Zips onto the Info in 2009.As far as BCS wins prior to JD, it gets a little tricky. We've had the BCS since 1998. It replaced the Bowl Alliance (1995-1997), which in turn had replaced the Bowl Coalition (1992-1994). Technically, the 1999 win over Temple (25-15) should count as a BCS win since the Owls were still in the Big East at the time. This is the only other BCS conference opponent the Zips have defeated in the BCS era, besides NC State and Syracuse. If you open it up to look at teams that are NOW in BCS conferences, and keep the discussion to the modern era (I'll say after 1970, sorry Heisman family members out there), I believe the only TWO victories that I can recall came against the UC Bearcats, 24-22 at Nippert in 1992 and 31-0 (yes, that is correct....I was there on a bright sunny day with about 6,000 others lol) at the Rubber Bowl in 1989 (both Faust teams).
  19. In order to form a more INCLUSIVE Zipsnation, consider it done Zip N' Dots!Henceforth, the official Zip/Brew chant will now be:Drink beer, drink beer, drink beer g-- d--- drink beer. I won't drink beer with any FAN who won't drink beer with an Akron FAN. Akron once, Akron twice, holy jumping JC. G-- D--- son of a b---- gooo Zips ps. any chance this will allow us to bring men's wresting back? can someome please read the fine print in Title IX?
  20. I was gonna hang out at home...but maybe I'll go up to OBC... We may have to introduce the bar to the chant. I learned it many years ago as a student and never hear it anymore. SeeTeeZip & Co., BRINGING BACK THE CHANT.SING IT WITH ME!Drink beer, drink beer, drink beer g-- d--- drink beer. I won't drink beer with any man who won't drink beer with an Akron man. Akron once, Akron twice, holy jumping JC. G-- D--- son of a b---- gooo Zips HEY NUBE!! Please refer to the following link, ironically from this board LAST year during "Army week".LinkBTW, I'll bye your 1st O'Hoppy Ale on Saturday , but only if you chant at the top of your lungs!
  21. Ahh yes, MDZip, you obviously recall the earlier posts from our returning hero. If memory serves me, they occured shortly after the Miami bank shot disaster. These initial posts from Mr. Hagen were cryptic (and even a little creepy to be honest) but I was a willing worker ant in his global struggle against basketball tournament selection injustices........then he left us just as suddenly as he had arrived. And I've been in limbo ever since, like Peter after the hypnotist keels over in Office Space. It sure is great to have you back, Mr. Hagen! Anyone with connections to the technology displayed by this image is a true asset to the entire Zipsnation. Don't be a stranger now
  22. That was me gz19. Maybe Doug gets it going this week at West Point? Go Zips!!
  23. Thanks for the scoop from someone who has "lived it and breathed it", ZipWatcher! Like a lot of situations, perhaps the list of things that I perceive as common between UConn and U*ass is superficial, and not as extensive as first suspected, when one considers the details. I guess the big driving factor is probably U*ass' long term intentions. If they wanted to go FBS it sure seems like this would be as viable a jump as any for teams currently competing in FCS. Now if they upset Texas Tech in Lubbock this weekend, all bets are off Zip go the Zippers!
  24. I think the Zips should be favored, but not by as much as 11 points. This is a very tough game for me to figure. We've historically had fits stopping the option and our 2008 defensive woes are well chronicled. On the surface thie would seem to indicate that we need to score BIG to won this one. Maybe not, though. Maybe Army's O-line just isn't that good and our weakened defensive front will have a better game than expected. I have a hunch that the latter will occur, and we'll make far less mistakes on offense than last week. So, I'll go:Zips 30The Black Knights of the Hudson 27
  25. It looks like Joe Dunn must have finally voted
