I'm having difficulty researching this, but I think Toledo and NIU were already on the original schedule. I think CMU is the new addition. That's a much easier task then Temple at this point.

Porter to coach U-23's
johnnyzip84 replied to TheTank123's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I wanted to wait a little while before commenting on Porter’s role in the US-23 disappointment. Here are a few thoughts: 1. From a purely UA-centric, selfish point of view, this result will most likely extend CP’s tenure at Akron for a couple of years. The DC United’s of the world may think twice before offering CP the next time a job opens up, for fear that CP’s dominant soccer approach only works when his players are all considerably better than those of his opponent (see point 3). 2. KD has (with some justification) been accused of being too loyal to players for his own good. Perhaps CP may have selected too many former Zips for this squad? 3. I’ve seen the Coach K/Duke analogy used to possibly describe CP’s Akron soccer program. I have another hoops coaching analogy in mind, and please hear me out before going ballistic. First let me say that these individuals couldn’t possibly be more different from a character standpoint. This is merely a comment on coaching philosophy. I think John Calipari’s philosophies and tactics are very similar to CP’s. Both favor athletic skill over physical presence. Both espouse high pace offense and constant pressure defense. Both can offer recruits credible evidence that their programs best prepare incoming players for “the next level”, because of the philosophies and tactics they teach. Both use the latter advantage to create separation from almost every other program in the NCAA. 4. Calipari’s composite NBA record was 72-112. It’s still far too early to draw any firm conclusions on how well CP can do in future MLS/USMNT ventures. Hopefully for CP, my Calipari analogy blows up in my face at some point. Regardless, I’m thrilled to have him at UA for as long as he desires. -
Lartey was rated fairly high as a recruit, and Bill Alexander has had injuries in the past to prevent him from showing what he could do. Maybe both of them are responding well to Buckley’s tutelage?

GT article on Albert Presley Elvis use to enjoy the phrase "takin' care of business in a f-l-a-s-h". Let's hope Albert can be all business in taking care of the f-l-a-s-h-e-s. You have to like the following quote from Coach Amato:

Oh, but they don't recall the Danny Nee (no, I didn't stutter) years with great fondness on the Bluff. Maybe if Doc Sadler spends one year as HC at Bobby Mo first?

Bob Golic used to slap him around every afternoon from 3 to 7, so I'm guessing he'll be OK

Butler, VCU, and George Mason to A-10?
johnnyzip84 replied to UAZip0510's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I am most definitely a member of elderly Zip fan nation! But, like Zippy, I'm perpetually young at heart You've done a nice job I laying out all possible scenarios for potential A-10 hoops membership, so I'll provide my thoughts on each. 1. The A-10 currently sponsors men's & women's hoops, X-country, baseball, golf, field hockey, lacrosse, men's & women's soccer, swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, indoor & outdoor track & field, rowing, softball, and volleyball. I'd say that means they could accommodate us quite nicely in all sports but football. 2. Like I alluded to earlier, I don't think it's impossible that the MAC could let us stay in for football only. But I still see it as pretty unlikely. I think Temple bolting so soon may give the conference cause for reconsidering the admittance (or allowance) of football only schools. 3. The only difference I see between the likelihood of this versus scenario #2 is that possibly the prestige of keeping Akron's nationally ranked soccer program might be enough to allow football to also stay. It's an interesting thought, because MAC soccer would be finished without Akron. Whether that means much to Steinbrecher and the presidents is another story. 4. This, like you said, takes us back to 1986. I do think there are some differences (facilities mainly) now that might make a go at being independent (again) more successful. It sure would be nice to get a few winning seasons under Coach Bowden before making such a move however. It's a good topic. -
Thanks for the tips!

Butler, VCU, and George Mason to A-10?
johnnyzip84 replied to UAZip0510's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Do you propose Zip football going independent in FBS or dropping to FCS? It's hard (not impossible) to see the MAC allowing us to stay for just football. -
It was only a matter of time before GT got 'meistered Does this mean you're volunteering your editorial services 'meister? Their budget is tight, but they're great fun over there at the BJ.

Thanks Got back a little while ago. Crew Stadium is a really nice facility. I knew it was the 1st purpose-built soccer stadium in the country, but I really didn't know what to expect. Thanks to $5 scalped tickets, we sat in the upper deck (section 227) and it actually reminded me of the sight lines at the Info. Probably thanks to this fantastic weather, the pitch was pristine. The entire experience was very fan friendly. As for the game, the Impact didn't give me much to root for, although they had several chances early on (Braun is a force). Once Brovsky got the straight red after only about 20 minutes (they really need Zarek back there), the game was more or less decided. Bernardo Corradi may have at one time been a Serie A standout, but at this point in his career he couldn't make it in Serie Z We didn't stick around for the reserve game, but I didn't see either Sinisa or Evan suited up (didn't notice Speas). Will have to make it back again sometime.

(Poll) Top Ten Biggest Zips Busts
johnnyzip84 replied to RootforRoo44's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I can't see Dru, Romeo or Wood being on this list, but a lot has to do with my definition of "bust". Mine is more in line with Dr Z's (much hype with little results). Bain is certainly one that stands out. I'd also put Nate Robinson under D-lineman who were supposed to be all-world. He has to be the only Zip football player ever who was originally a 5-star recruit (BEST DL in nation according to one of the services). Frenchy even got caught up in the hype. I heard him predict at least one MAC defensive POY award for Nate. And while Frenchy is defintitely a "homer", he generally doesn't get caught up too much in speculation either. Nate wound up being a DECENT MAC player, but not much else. I'm surprised GP1 hasn't brought up the Canadian RB Thomas Plummer? -
Here is another fine report from Ohio.com I'm really intrigued by this little tidbit: How would that be for irony if a guy from Ianello's high school wound up playing a key role in the Zips' resergence?

So far, so good regarding the team's attitude (it seems). That's HUGE in itself. I like it that Coach Bowden doesn't appear to take anything for granted. Once again, it's great to have so many media outlets at least somewhat interested in UA football. Nice find!

Here's to hoping that by the end of next season it's completely clear who hits the GLASS much harder!
-
Now that’s what I call foresight! Good for you to put forth that kind of effort. Of course we all hope it pays off handsomely in the end. So now we can ask, “who hits the books harder, Zeke or Mama Zeke?”
-
No doubt. Was there ever a Zip who could make big plays look so effortless? And to Dr Z's point: johnnyzip84 = homer

I found this Montreal Gazette article on Evan Bush as he adjusts to being an MLS 3rd-team GK as opposed to starting (and starring) for a NASL squad. As a side note, I'm heading to C-Bus this weekend to see the Impact (my adopted MLS team) take on the Crew. This will be my very 1st MLS game (way overdue) and I look forward to rooting on the Impact even though the Zip contigent in Montreal is highly unlikely to see any action. In addition to Bush being behind Ricketts and Sutton, Sinisa is hurt and Zarek is with the USA U-23s. Still looking forward to it, despite rain in the forecast.

I can't disagree with you. Maybe THEY don't remember the 35-0 shellacking Gerry's kids put on UC back in the day, but I sure do Here's to days like that in the not-too-distant future

I didn't really want to create a new thread for this, so since it is related to the sweet 16 I'll place it here. This is a Cincinnati reporter's take on why the Queen City apparently takes little notice of tOSU (news to me). What is particularly troubling is his complete dismissal of local college sports in Akron, Toledo, Cleveland, etc. I really hope Dambrot, Bowden, Porter and company make this guy eat his words, the sooner the better!

You are correct. Favors is (was) the guy. Good eye on Russell. I figured I must have missed a couple. Like B&G says, he was a pretty versatile guy with decent speed. But somehow I think we'll recover
