True, but that's down from 10 or 11 last spring I was wondering the same thing about Ferguson. I'm betting Coach Bowden and staff gave the successful track team a once over
-
I noticed that GoZips updated the spring 2012 roster recently. There's nothing earth-shattering here, but it's great to see Bre' Ford still on the team. I was concerned toward the end of 2011 that he might not be back. Off the top of my head, about the only guy I don't see is the TE from Dayton who originally signed with Colorado (Farmer or something like that?). He didn't play anyway. I'm probably missing someone, but there certainly has been no mass exodus. Also, I noticed another kicker (from Indianapolis) was added to the roster. Maybe he'll have a big leg for kickoffs? AJ Fox was fine for FGs and extra points, but the short kickoffs were maddening. And the track star Phil Ferguson (not the long-time Akron area bowler/radio broadcaster) from Copley is going out for wide receiver. We also added Zach Tenuta, a TE formerly from Marshall. There are a few other transfers from other colleges.

Well done! Good for you guys

And if it doesn't work out, I can be the fall guy for Coach Bowden

GT's 1st day wrap-up in the Beacon IMHO, this quote from Cody Grice says a LOT:
-
I have a tendancy to think the longer Shaka thinks over the reported $2.5 million/year offer, the more likely he'll stay in Richmond for 2012-2013. Perhaps FSU's Hamilton will be hired instead?

I was referring to his overall body of work (not just hoops). With akzipper, the glass isn't half-full or half-empty. Instead it's lying on the floor in a billion tiny shards just waiting to cause nasty infections for all unsuspecting Zip fans

Thanks for the heads up, Mike Courtesy of the information GT wrote in the blog, we now have a name (Dalton Williams) for the QB from Texas Coach Bowden mentioned to a group of us a few weeks ago. On the surface, you have to wonder why Dalton couldn't get any PT at SFA, but I'm not real familiar with their QB situation over the last 4 years although they had a combined 25-11 record since 2009. Edit: Looks like he got stuck behind this guy (2010 SLC POY and 3 time all-SLC). I LOVE seeing Cody Grice getting moved to DT. I've mentioned numerous times, that his "tree trunk" legs would seem to have the capacity to carry a much larger frame. Rossi to LB has been on my mind for a long time as well. LT Smith getting moved from safety to WR is interesting. I'm pumped!

That usually includes the Zips as well.

Here is a pretty interesting story stemming from a recently published book written by an agent. His proposal to "clean up" college athletics hinges on agents being allowed to lend money to players, within the constraints of some oversight and regulation. I haven't read the book, but this and the following articles have definitely piqued my curiosity. An additional story by Andy Staples

Temple granted immediate release from MAC.
johnnyzip84 replied to RowdyZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
I don't know how accurate this is, but this website (one I check in on every now and then for possible conference realignment information) claims the MAC can basically kick UMass out after 2 years since Temple has decided to leave (scroll about 1/3 of the way down the page). If true, will they? -
I listened as well gozips19 and you pretty much nailed it! The one thing I might add is that KD said he was probably looking at recruiting two 5's and a 4 OR two 4's and a 5 for the 2013 class (from a total class of 4 I believe he added). In summary, he's not happy with the way the season ended, but he's not sad either (recognizing some of the team's accomplishments). I thought that was a fair statement.

Mike Thomas will be doing everything he can to change this.

Especially when you consider Baylor nearly got the death penalty under former HC Dave Bliss not so long ago.

I didn't want to hijack the VCU thread, so I'll address DiG's comment that OU is built for the short haul here. I'll agree OU is still susceptable to going cold from outside the arc. But as much as I hate to admit it, F Scott Fitzgerald (wink) was correct earlier in the year when he gave props to Groce for finally getting the Bobcats to play great team defense. This is the big difference in this year's OU squad as compared to the one from 2009-2010. And it's also the reason why I think they'll defeat Stan Heath's USF Bulls tomorrow.
-
I'll admit I didn't notice the black and blue until it was mentioned, but it does look a little boring and unimaginative. Wasn't there some controversy in a recent tourney (last year's NCAAs?) regarding players slipping on mid-court logos? Could there be a connection? With regards to the current setup, I think it's just about right (although I'm not a big fan of the play-in games). This first weekend is actually my favorite, and not just because of the potential upsets. The championship contenders certainly don't win the tourney in the opening rounds. But they most certainly can lose it. I wouldn't call yesterday's outcomes meaningless or a waste of time for Duke and Mizzou.

Like skip, I was very torn heading into this game. Once the sting of last Saturday subsided a little, I thought about next season and concluded, barring something unexpected, both UA and OU have a good chance to dance next year. And an OU run this year MAY help in that regard. So I'm rooting for the a-holes to make it to the sweet 16 and no farther. Besides, I have them winning two games in my bracket. Yesterday was not an upset IMHO.

Just like John Chaney But 52 is REALLY young to be retiring from college coaching. I'll bet he shows up somewhere else before too long. Can't say I'm that impressed with his in-game coaching though, And he took some risks on players that ended up costing him. Before anyone mentions it, I DO recall that Chaney didn't actually coach the NIT game against the Zips. But I like to think the UA victory still hastened his retirement!

Butler also made the NCAA's in 1962 (and a few other NITs when that tournament meant a little more than it does now). As an aside, who here thinks Todd Lickliter has a shot to be the next Miami University HC? The successful ex-Butler HC and not-so-successful ex-Iowa HC was an assitant for the Redhawks this past season. -
Incipient The Zips were right on the verge of breaking through this year. I believe it will happen next season as long as the chemistry issues are adequately addressed. Otherwise, the program could easily take a few steps backward. Like Hilltopper says, these things are part of all sports teams. But it's a question of severity. I don't know whether I can blame it on social media or what, but I personally have read (without too much effort) evidence of what seems to be a significant amount of friction between certain players and between the coach and certain players. There's no need to dwell on the individuals involved, because that's not my point. I just hope everyone can get on the same page without it causing too much of a distraction in 2012-2013.

I agree 100% with your biggest concern. If things get out of hand, it won't matter how much talent the Zips have. This is KD's biggest challenge in the off-season. -
No doubt!! I don't think I've ever seen a 7 footer with that much momentum heading into a slam. He nearly pivoted right off the rim as he was hanging on for dear life!
-
I believe it’s actually easier to commit an “intentional, but not really intentional” foul off of an inbounds as opposed to the running action. A smart coach/player simply can always plant a seed in a referee’s ear during the timeout. But I completely agree with you that precious seconds were wasted when Q had the ball. Certainly a few more seconds opens up a lot more possibilities for that last second inbounds play. And I’ll grant you that late game clock management was poor over the last few games.
-
Just because you advance the ball past half court and call a timeout doesn't mean they can't use the same fouling strategy on the ensuing inbounds. They can always choose to foul away from the ball and send that guy to the line.
