  1. The Zips head to Kalamazoo Tuesday to face “Crash” Hawkins’ 11-14 Broncos.  They are coming off of losses to the Kittens and the EMUs. West Division Preseason All-MAC Team 6’1” junior guard Michael Flowers continues to lead the Broncos in scoring at 17 ppg.   6’8” junior forward Brandon Johnson is a force inside, averaging 15 ppg and 8 rpg.

The Zips beat beat the Broncos 84-79 at the JAR on January 7th led by LCJ’s 26.  As I recall, WMU came back a little in the second half but then LCJ hit three straight 3s as the Zips pulled away.  The Zips will be looking for their 7th road win!

  2. If Reece is to be a starter, he has to play smarter.  I love his motor and his effort.  While undersized, he generally holds his own down low.  However, he commits way too many fouls to be on the floor for extended periods, at the clip of a foul every six minutes.  To put that in perspective, Cheese has the same number of fouls (65) and has played a whopping 351 more minutes than Reece.

NWAkron is right on in his assessment of Jackie Whindon.  Surprised she's still just on the Zips ESPN+ broadcasts.

Cool that we are included but gotta get there first. Tomorrow is going to be tough, CMU is way better at home than they are on the road.

I cringe every time ZipsNation starts getting too excited.  I've been an NEO sports fan for too long and I am always looking for that train (felony indictment, DV arrest. season ending injury...) hiding around the bend.

Just get me to Cleveland with a decent seed.

Yeah, I expect Plowden's numbers will trend up with Frye no longer in the picture. He'll likely claim a 2nd team nomination by the end of a season. BG is good now, but they will be a force to be reckoned with next season if they can avoid Plowden and Turner from transferring.

It's hard for me to include Willie on a 2nd or 3rd team just because Toledo is 4-8. How could any MAC team be that bad if they have 3 of the MAC's top 15 players, especially when 1 of them is top 5? In reality it's probably just a poor reflection on Kowalczyk. I know Toledo fans will say it's because they have no depth, but if you look a cross the MAC that's true for every team besides BG and maybe Kent. Hell we as Akron fans cringe anytime one of the freshmen 3 see the floor.

At 6'6" Jackson's running away with the MAC rebounding title.  No one else is even close and no one in the MAC has averaged as many per game since the 16-17 season.  He's also averaging 12 ppg making him the only MAC player averaging a double double.  That's my reason for including him.

I don't buy the no depth argument for Toledo.  They should be able to win with the seven dwarfs on the roster with the Jacksons and Knapke.

This is how I'd have it

    First Team:

    LCJ

    M. Jackson

    Turner

    German

    Teague

    Second Team:

    Cheese

    Flowers

    Graves

    Preston

Knapke/Plowden/MnKay (Not really sure on this last spot)

Nice job.  I'd work in Willie Jackson somewhere and possibly Plowden.

  6. Off of an impressive win against BG, the Zips head to Mount Pleasant Friday night to face the 13-10 Chippewas.  6'5" senior guard Kevin McKay leads the Chipps in scoring and rebounding at 15 ppg and nearly 7 rpg.  David DiLeo scores 14+ while kicking in nearly 5 rpg.  While their overall record is not outstanding they are 11-2 at home with wins over NIU, Toledo, Ball State and BG in Mount Pleasant.  They are coming off of two losses to Canada and Eastern.  They were predicted to finish 4th in the West.

  7. Great win for the Zips.  Most importantly did not let them back in the game.

MD is right on Riak.  He was big on defense tonight when BG went to the basket.  He disrupted a lot of shots.

Loved how they mixed up the defense tonight.  Trapping on the ball screen then switching it then getting through the picks; man to man then 1-3-1 then back to man.   Kept them on their toes all night.

Against a team like BG it's going to be important to get some quality bench minutes. They sub out a lot so their players will have fresh legs during crunch time.

As painful as the EMU game was, I think it gave the coaches a little faith in the freshmen subs.
