  1. Agree. I'm not trying to slight Tressel at all, I'm just not sure this makes sense. Unfortunately he's going to be remembered for his one big screw-up than for all the good he's done, but he's still a high-quality person and obviously an outstanding football coach. He might be a good President, but Proenza set the bar pretty high. Need a slam-dunk here. This is probably a stretch, but who cares... it's similar to when Tressel "left" OSU. He elevated the program to a point where anything less than an Urban Meyer type hire was going to be a disappointment. (Hang in there Fickell, probably get your shot as a MAC HC pretty soon). I think Proenza's work at Akron puts them in a similar spot with this position.
  2. They talked about this on SportsCenter and it's on a bunch of websites obviously. The LeBron haters are going to hate, but this is great for us.
  3. I like Tressel and he seems a smart guy, but University President? What makes anyone think he's qualified for this? Not saying it won't happen, but I don't see the fit.
  4. From Urban Dictionary: Bafoon: A moron who thinks he is smarter than others but cannot spell the word 'buffoon'.
  5. Again, you're throwing out a bunch of hypotheticals to support your point. And "Trust me" is always a sure sign that a person doesn't have facts to support their argument. You could make a stronger case for LIC if you listed the backgrounds on some of our recent football transfers. Everything UA has done there has also been by the NCAA rulebook, but if you're looking to start false panic it's a better place to start.
  6. So what you're saying is that IF the University had screwed up, then the University would have screwed up. Enlightening. In the real world though, the University took swift and appropriate action.
  7. The more I read about this guy the more excited I am to watch him play. A big-time DL can really change the entire game. If he can be disruptive we could make a little noise in the MAC after all. Michigan has had some great OL classes recently so that could be a great indicator.
  8. Unless there are some other facts we don't know, this isn't even remotely close to lack of institutional control. The University had a plan in place to deal with this type of issue, and when they became aware of the situation they executed the plan. He broke the law, but it's not as if coaches recruited him by saying "you can make tons of money selling pot around here". UA suspended its star point guard at a crucial point in the biggest season they'd ever had - hell we might be the example for excellent control systems.
  9. Dear God please let us never imitate the ND uniforms. The constant gold glow from those helmets makes them even more unwatchable.
  10. Nice job of quoting facts here. Those in this thread arguing that it isn't important are simply naive.
  11. It's about money. MAC schools will never be able to afford the top coaches, top facilities, etc. that recruits will go to. Can't State couldn't keep their coach from leaving for Purdue, which hasn't been relevant in quite some time. But it's top 5 conference member, so it's a no brainer. Here, check out the Alabama assistant salaries... Bonuses for Alabama coaches up 33 percent to almost $1.5 million
  12. As has been discussed in many threads on this forum, conferences like the MAC are basically hosed in the NCAA having to compete with programs like Alabama or any other top program. It's just never going to happen. So rooting for your alma mater and the team from your youth - who cares? It would be nice if they went to like 10 conferences, with a top 5 and lower 5 split up. Give us both a playoff system and a championship. Why not? Wouldn't this generate more money? I'd rather know we had a legitimate shot at a championship rather than hopes of getting slaughtered in a BCS bowl one day. Call it the mid-major championship or something.
  13. Recruits are apparently going to force Oklahoma to change too... Oklahoma Uniforms
  14. It's strange to all of us, but it is a big factor for them. Besides, if they commit to someone with better unis, they're still getting a free education. It might mean they're a little silly, but not sure it means they have bad character. I don't think Akron is lagging here anyway - our look has been upgraded over the years. If we somehow make a bowl in the near future, please tell me we don't hire the people that designed what Can't wore last year.
  15. Always nice to get some attention. SI seems to still churn out good content while I basically don't even recognize ESPN anymore.
  16. Those are all great fantasies. Now welcome to reality. As of today there are no corporate sponsors or wealthy benefactors looking to build a new basketball arena for the Zips. And overall attendance for our sports teams isn't strong enough to justify the investment. Also, it's a University - academics should come first. Now instead of waiting for someone else to step-up, try the strange idea of stepping up yourself and get to more games. Quit griping about the competition (which one of those schools offered you a scholarship?) and quit griping about the arena (it seemed good enough for Zeke and others big name recruits) and get to more games. And not just men's basketball, all sports. Good lord you can get a basketball ticket for $10.
  17. First, that was a great post by taxpayer. Agree with basically everything. Second, saying the MAC is weak once again illustrates the overall point - people aren't interested in simply coming out and enjoying the Zips. It's really just an excuse. Akron has had the best team in recent years, but there have been plenty of battles. We're not THAT far ahead of everyone else. Finally, complaining about the OOC schedule is also just making excuses. Last year we had Middle Tenn. and Princeton, which are both very good programs. So is CSU, though they're so close I'm not sure how to count them. So until the apathy changes, we're stuck. And I like what Coach Bowden is doing, but if he really wants to help out, he needs to fill up the football stadium. I think it will happen, but why invest in something new when the last investment hasn't worked out as planned?
  18. Coach Bowden is quoted at the end of this article on the new targeting rule... Changes put targeting rules in the cross hairs
  19. What the heck is going on at WMU? When I was checking this kid on 247, I looked at MAC ranking and they already have 13 3 stars? I know it's way early and this stuff fluctuates like crazy, but that's pretty good.
  20. Because the fans are a bunch of whiners. The schedule is fine. If people want to see home game against top 25 teams they should be following another team. It's not just Akron fans, it's all fans. Quit whining and show up to the games. Aren't you there to support Akron anyway? If the opponent matters so much you aren't really a fan.
  21. I remember at freshman orientation ('91) they told us "look around, half of you won't graduate here". After a few months people were already dropping out. But this writer seems to have an agenda, so I do doubt his numbers. Shockingly, I busted my butt and got my degree in 5 years (co-op program added a year), but my friends who decided to party more than study didn't make it. Funny how hard work pays off. So I put this stuff on the students more than the University, and that goes for any University.
  22. I think this illustrates my concerns. First, Roo, I'm not ripping you. You're being honest, which on the internet is weird, but refreshing. Anyway, I think this viewpoint is the one most in Akron/NE Ohio would relate to - we'll come to a few "big" games, but that's about it. A new arena doesn't change that opinion. The problem is that there aren't enough "big" teams to go around, plus they want you on their court anyway. It's just the reality of the MAC.
  23. Lol - great clip. This will be all of us some day, griping about the Rubber Bowl and the JAR to our grandchildren.
  24. Add WMU to the frenzy. New unis announced for them too, though they seem kind of blah. Penn State seems to be rolling in the changes slowly. I'd imagine something on the helmet eventually, but they have much bigger recruiting problems obviously.
  25. What are you helping to build? I already contribute plus I'm dragging people to the JAR, and no one complains about it. One friend is in his 70's. His statement was yeah, the bleachers suck, but it's two hours, get over it. Toughen up.
