Big Ten Rankings MAC Rankings Just using 2013 as an example, the highest rated MAC team was still rated behind the last-place Big Ten team. Please explain how the gap is closing. Again, what does it matter? Shouldn't be just be concerned about Akron picking up a few MAC wins?

Alabama is currently scheduled to play 3 top 25 teams. Ragging on the Big Ten doesn't help the MAC a lot, since that's the large conference we play the most often. So if you want to push the narrative that the Big Ten is so awful, then by extension the MAC must be abysmal since they have an excellent record against us. The SEC has 1 incredible team, then maybe 3 more great teams. There are a few great teams in the PAC-12, Big Ten and ACC. The Big 12 is struggling, but a few pretty good teams. Beyond that it's basically even. I think it was ESPN that started pushing this conference narrative so much. My advice would be to turn off ESPN.

On the flip-side of these positive vibes, we should also acknowledge that Michigan is generally getting pummeled in the polls for playing us close. So that sucks.

Exactly. There will be close calls again this week, making those teams the flavor of the week. We need a win to keep local interest going though.

I hate to say it, but I think we're a long way away from fans showing up in large numbers. I hope I'm wrong. This is also a very good opponent, but I doubt the casual fans cares much. I'll predict a similar crowd, if not slightly smaller, from the opener.

I think you summed it up well. Bowden has us on the right path, so we'll see what happens. Still early in his tenure so not fully stocked with talent yet. Be interesting to see how the team reacts to the Michigan game. I really don't think any Akron fan can honestly predict what team will show up Saturday. But that's better than the last few years, when we knew.

Unfortunately, this is true. Let's not get into blaming the refs. We got close, but Michigan rose up. If Pohl gets what, one more second?, we win. It didn't happen. Let's hope we win Saturday and keep the momentum going. Wisconsin could blame the refs too, but they should blame themselves for that game even being close.

Man. I thought Michigan would roll us so I'm very, very happy with the way Akron played today.... but man that was painful. To get so close to the goal line and not finish it. Damn. Sports can provide some happy times, but it seems like they deliver a lot more pain. Let's hope we can look back at this game as the day we turned the corner. This wasn't a fluke of being close, Akron hung in there. If we can roll off some MAC wins, recruits will take notice. Also, Pohl seems to be growing each game. I'm bummed right now, but this could be a good year after all. Let's keep the momentum going next Saturday.

Les Miles is weak?

I don't think it's worth responding to GP1 anymore. Almost everything he's written about this has been horribly off the mark. I'd say he's an Okie State fan, but I've never met one so it doesn't seem likely. Anything that puts the heat on the larger programs is fine by me. It only helps the competitive balance for smaller schools, so why anyone here would care is strange.

I'm not going to waste one second of my day listening to a hack like Jason Whitlock. When ESPN is exploiting athletes by running promos of them for their games, it's all well and good. When a university does something similar, they (Jay Bilas being the lead) cry about the fate of the poor athlete. And when ESPN wants to drag a program through the mud for ratings, again, no problem. When another news outlet does it, they attack the sources. SI directly competes with their magazine you know. ESPN does some good work, but they've become too much a part of the system. One could argue they run the system more than the NCAA at this point.

So basically what you're saying is, you're completely unaware that SI has already published the first three parts of the story. And today's was on drugs. Maybe you should stick with topics you actually know something about.

If you think a 4 or 5 star from this area is ever going to choose Akron over Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, etc., you're beyond hopeless. Look how many Akron kids are flocking to Ohio State right now. We're a mid-major. Ohio State is a blue-blood. I love my Zips, but they're not on the same level. Why anyone cares really is beyond me.

Don't you hate when you get sucked in though? There's just something about the internet that makes you think, "I can reason with this guy". But it's not true. There is no reasoning with someone like this. You hit it on the head in an earlier post - it's an obsession. Many in Ohio that aren't OSU fans are simply obsessed with the Buckeyes. I'm sure the same thing happens in other states. I'd imagine there were tons of Pitt fans that just loved the Penn State sanctions for example. And for everyone up on Mt. Along these lines, I hate when players jump on a guys back to celebrate a big play. There have been numerous injuries caused by this too.
