Hold up a minute there Zipsoutsider. Here is a young man, involved with the team ,who is trying to stay positive . Cut him some slack here. Zach you stay positive and ignore the nay sayers. Some just dwell in the past and can’t move on. Better days ahead.

He is a "correspondant." He writes stories about the team for digital content marketing. That doesn't make him involved with the program. It makes him a fanboy.

What a financial disaster this is. The first mistake was firing Bowden with 2 years left on his contract, $630,000 down the drain. Can we bring him back for next year since we’re still paying him another year?

The second mistake was hiring Tom Arth away from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with a $370,000 buyout clause.

The third and biggest mistake was giving Tom Arth a 5 year deal at $500,000 per year. He wasn’t doing anything spectacular at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to merit that kind of money.

This is a financial disaster and there’s no way to fix it other than enduring the pain for the next 3-4 years. The only thing to do is cut costs.

No matter how bad Tom Arth does, even if he goes 0-12 in 2020, he’ll be back again in 2021 and 2022, regardless of going 0-12 3 years in a row. It’s unreal how he got an underserved $2million contract. What was the University thinking???

I’m so grateful that I graduated in 2008 and don’t have to pay for this crap. I feel bad for the students that do. What a disaster this is.

Those that wanted Bowden fired, this is all on you. I hope you’re happy.

I have started considering, whether intentional or not, there is not future for football at Akron. What a litany of bad decisions.

The NFL finds talent.  But they aren't going to find talent that never gets on the field.  However, not all fields are the same.  Getting on the field for Akron means that you are on national TV several weeks per year, including some weeknights when you are the only game on TV.

You look at a kid like Alvin. All offenses needed to really do is keep away from him for 4 quarters and they could score at will against us. Tgere will be very little film highlights for him to help scouts find what he can do. Hopefully, his film from the previous 2 years will help.

We all know there is nothing new here, so why bring in Dyer to cherry pick another story to "expose."? Let Marla Ridenour or George Thomas write this story if they want. And is it really a front page Sunday story? I'm as critical as many about the new regime and some of the past decisions, but I prefer to hear it from people who are around the subject on a consistent basis.

His asseasment of Arth is spot on but there seems to be an obvious anti-football agenda.

I would think there would be a reverse flow from the Transfer Portal.  There are lots of good players out there not getting on the field for good teams that would love to come to a program where they could start.  The good news in the bad news is that you can look very attractive to Jucos and grad transfers who want one more shot to play.  And not necessarily just Last Chance U players.

Honestly, you have a better chance making the NFL for a quality team in a lower division than you do the Zips in current state. It's not like you are coming to play for a Chuck Amato with a reputation for building certain skill players. I feel bad for Alvin Davis as this season has likely hurt his chances.

  5. Bob Dyer: University of Akron football is invisible

"In June, interim University of Akron President John Green said half of the $1 million that had to be cut from the football budget this year would be offset by a huge boost in attendance that would result from the hiring of new coach Tom Arth.

    Ahem.

The new coach's football team, with one game left to play, is 0-11. It is the worst team in the 130-school Football Bowl Subdivision, the only team without a single victory.

Arth is the only UA head coach without a win since Harry Wilson finished his career at 0-1 in 1896....

...Unfortunately, this year's team is difficult to watch in person or on TV. Statistically, UA is the worst FBS team in America in scoring, rushing offense, third-down conversions, sacks allowed, blocked kicks allowed and blocked punts allowed. They are second-worst in total offense, first downs and turnover margin."

This all falls on Larry Williams' shoulders.

Be careful with comments like that...you might get banned!

And how exactly are these OL and DL transfers going to get to Akron?  It's an 0-12 team, with a no-name head-coach...in the middle of Ohio.

Yup. Bowden was able to do it. He had name recognition and assistant coaches with name recognition, especially on defense. I don't see how Arth pulls it off. He wasn't in SEC long enough to develop strong ties.

I will be honest, I watched some of Q1 but had the game on while I was working last night so I was mainly monitoring the score. I cannot make myself watch this horrible execution of play, any longer.

I feel bad for Alvin Davis. He is a high level player and it will be hard for him to get any attention because opposing offenses basically can design plays away from him.

Because Bowden was relieved of his duties for the sake of installing our next great coach, Arth. It is therefore impossible to dissociate the two.

We are a severely cashed strapped university. The only responsible time to move on from Bowden would have been after his contract expired. And yes, if we had another season or two like the 2018 season, I would have been okay finding a new coach at that time.

And because it didnt even take most fans a year to realize it was a colossal mistake to fire Bowden last year....minus the two posters who can't admit they were wrong

To me, the problem in the past 15 years with football has been overly-ambitious AD's prematurely firing coaches to advance their own career by trying to hire the next MAC Urban Meyer or Brian Kelly but not having the experience to recognize good candidates. Of the last 4 coaches (Brookhart, iCoach, Bowden, and Arth), two were terrible candidates (iCoach and Arth) and were arguably not at all qualified to coach at this level. I felt Brookhart after serving as offensive coordinator at Pitt and Bowden won everywhere he coached including a P5 school and a smaller D-1AA program he turned around.

I recall when iCoach was fired, it was late in the process and there weren't many (if any) qualified candidates. Then Bowden through his hat in. We got lucky. Firing a guy like Bowden who literally saved this program got us another weak pool of candidates and there wasn't another Bowden waiting to save us. Hence Arth: a terrible hire. This rolling the dice for the next great coach has to stop. Bring competitive football back to UA!

    This is it, right here.

Do you really think things were going well with Bowden?  I get the Arth criticism, but damn, they couldn't even get lined up for a kickoff correctly.   I could understand a "things were better with Bowden" response, but to say things weren't going badly is revisionist history.

Yet we still won games when we shouldn't have been able to win them. Yes, things were rough, but nothing like we see now. Not even close.

My questions about the transfers is this:

If these kids can not get playing time on the worst team in all of D1 Football, who do they think is going to be interested in making them an offer?

I am not convinced this staff knows how to pick the best talent and I am guessing the kids are not, either.

"It takes a village" to build a team this bad.  It's not just one factor.  The team started to crumble under Bowden and he failed to recruit adequately;  the search by the AD was poorly done;  the administration has not made the program a priority; the new staff was not prepared for the difficult transition; and the community shows little or no support.  At the end of the day, those factors have combined for failure.  Miserable failure.  To this point, it does not appear the staff had been up to the task, but much more has gone into this abomination than just the perceived shortcomings of the current staff.

Marshal through.  Fight to keep the best kids here.  Recruit well.  Bolster the staff.  Move on from here.

Starting to crumble is a bit of a stretch. They struggled through injuries at key positions but there is a vast difference between what we saw last year at the end compared to this year.  Not even in the same league. This team can do next to nothing, right and they are not improving.

The one I think they made a mistake on was Dre Williams.  He was our leading receiver last year in the slot.  Because of the pro style offense & only having one slot they moved him to outside receiver because they fell in love with Boogie’s work ethic.  I don’t think they expected Burkhart to dominate camp.  I guess he had like 12 TD’s & more catches than all receivers.  Next closest TD’s was like 4.  Boogie didn’t do well in games & they moved Dre to slot but he had to make a decision before playing 4 games since he didn’t redshirt he can use this year & still have 2 years left.  Mathison ended up at the slot & Hicks outside.  It’s really hurt our offense losing Burkhart & Williams.  Even losing Morris to injury.  Lost 3 of our best weapons & it’s definitely showing.

    Agree about Dre Williams.

I thought Zaire Jacobs started to show a lot of promise as he developed towards the end of last season. I know Mounds was a huge factor in recruitment so he may have decided to blaze when the old regime went out.
