This is a game between 2 horrible football teams.

You are wrong. The Zips will win. More details later in the week.
That is hilarious.
Zero reason to have any hope for this unless other teams are canceling their season.

I heard from a close source two more starters opted out today & as of now, 4 more starters are leaving at the end of the season.
All I heard was how Bowden had lost the team. I don't remember groups of players quitting like this mid-way through the season.
We have a coach we cannot afford to fire because we are still paying the last guy. Brilliant.

I can remember people here calling for Bowden's head after embarrassing losses to P5 schools and I don't recall even them putting up 69 points.. This guy shouldn't even make it through the rest of the season. 69 from Can't? With the backup playing for Q4?

Fact is we don't have 4 years to wait for a turnaround.
We are bleeding $$$$
Yup. Schools of similar size across the country are in dire straights, financially. They simply cannot afford to continue dumping money into vanity programs like this any more.

It's a complete build. We'll know in a couple years whether Tom Arth is the man to build a conference contender or not. Actually, with the economics of the university, we have him until his contract is up. The previous regime didn't leave him much to work with.
I understand in northeast Ohio "rebuild" is a four letter word. I've lived it too.
This is year 2....I would hope we don't wait until year 4 for results. Also, there is zero reason for optimism.
Larry Williams' ego has already cost the program, dearly.

Well, there you go. Someone choosing to ignore the number of accomplishments in terms of wins as a D 1 program, bowl game appearances, and MaC championship appearances.
Arth appears to be exactly what I thought he would be: a nothingburger.

I admire your guys optimism. I have generally been the "optimistic" "patience" guy on here too. Certainly, my pessimism this morning is at least in part from the mental hangover caused by that @$$-kicking. Keep talking me down!
As far as LZips comment "we may be looking at starting back over, and I fear starting the "rebuilding" process yet again", that's part of my apprehension. If this rebuild doesn't take, the Zips are stuck with it due to the finances of the school.
I can only imagine the joy of the professors union this morning.
This is spot on.
The first head to roll should be Larry Williams. What a disaster.

Good for Council. He was not going to get the opportunity to take his game to the next level as a Zip. Best of luck.

I appreciate the info. Any idea on where they ended up and if they saw the field? Thanks again.
If you go look at the 2019 recruiting thread you can see who. There were very who stayed committed to Arth. Too early to tell about their on field impact as so many Freshmen redshirt.

Which recruits decommitted when he left?
Arth released them from their commitments. IIRC, most did not end up at Akron.

I think everyone on this board would agree TB is HOF material compared to the icoach. I have not read a single post comparing him to Ianello as you describe above. Also, nobody has said anything lauding Arth as a great coach. It was an uninspiring hire. I just do not know how you evaluate him fairly this season when the program was left in such poor shape with no depth and little talent. If the Zips had won 8 of their last 10 games in TB's final season instead of the opposite, I could understand the anger, but they were in a serious decline.
How many games do you think TB would have won with this team? Two? One? None? If he had gone 2-10 this year, would you have still fought to keep him?
TB would not have had this team. His recruits are elsewhere.
Even if you take talent off if the table, Arty made more than a few horrible coaching calls this season. Talent doesnt fix bad game situation coaching.

Amen brother ! Zipsoutsider can’t let it go.. Bowden is done, finished end of story .Please move on !
Actually, let's take a look at this. This is a "Terry's next endeavor" thread. Bowden was fired and yet the same three people keep taking shots at Bowden like he was on the same level as Ianello, despite the facts. Who hasn't moved on? Those clinging to a new loser coach and taking shots at the old one who actually elevated the program.

@clarkwgriswold and @John Ward maybe we should review how well firing Bowden has worked out. #BreakingNews - worst record in ot only the MAC, but all D1 College football, not even a glimmer of hope for a bowl bid, lost the Wagon Wheel...but it was a brilliant move to fire Bowden, lol. I bow to such wisdom.

With all due respect , zipoutsider, I realize your feelings are still hurt that your boy got canned. Get over it,put the punch down...He gone ...Not coming back. There is no joke about that... Clown ! Truth hurts sometimes. You will be Ok.
Seriously, what makes you the wealth of knowledge over which how coaches handle discipline? When you call the coach who took the team from consecutive 1-11 seasons to its first bowl win, first B10 win, a MAC East title and and championship appearance and call him mediocre it only shows what an idiot you are. Grow up.

Probably no-one. Not sure why some of you think he is so great. Mediocre at best ! Has no discipline when it comes to players. Players rule him. He needs to get a D2 or JUCO job in FL since thats all he recruits anyways .
You are proving yourself to be a complete joke.

Im going to have to disagree with you on this. Have you ever seen Nick Saban on the sidelines or Urban Meyer? They are no strangers to ripping into those boys so lets not get all soft here.
Yup. That is the way some guys do it and they get away with it. Those days are disappearing, in case you haven't noticed. Waiting for someone to complain about kids going soft in 3-2-1...
On 12/2/2019 at 8:54 PM, clarkwgriswold said:Yes, but every player must make eye contact and react like they are hanging on every word.
Hang on every word? No. Look like they dont even want to be there? That is a problem.
On 12/2/2019 at 8:39 PM, LZIp said:Seriously. One photo of a coach yelling without context?! That's an incredibly soft comment and a reach. I immediately thought of Saban throwing a tantrum in the Iron Bowl Saturday as a counter example. I recall Hicks getting kicked out of a game, can't remember which one, and Arth going straight to him and sternly talking about the incident and why it can't happen. There was no screaming in a situation that would have 100% warranted it.I have met the man, though not in a football environment, but I have also observed him throughout the year, and based on what I can see, Arth's demeanor does not strike me as a blow hard at all.
I will say 94zipgrad's comment about being him "too much" did catch my eye though. He's proven that when he says something, we should listen. Is that feeling a result of Bowden not having control? Or is Arth being a control freak and having days scripted and expecting kids go to class, have good grades, etc not common at other places? My guess would be the former. Arth has disciplined players at the expense of the team throughout the year and the team had the highest ever cumulative GPA in his first semester. We all want results on the field - and thats what he's paid to get - but molding young men to be successful citizens post football is pretty damn important too.
What exactly are you smoking? Bowden lost control? What a joke. I am related to a player who played under Bowden. He skipped a couple of classes and started to let grades slip and it was dealt with before it became a problem. You seem nice, but full of crap, TBH.
On 12/3/2019 at 9:19 AM, Spin said:I liked the Bowden hire and how he coached, but I think we all have to admit he lost the team last year.
Complete BS.
Oh, and Arth has yet to demonstrate that he has the team with him. I see zero evidence of that. Zero.

I had no idea about all this. If those boys came in the room smelling it up , well than more power to Mr Arth to rip off that band aid( ya’ll like that saying). Kudos to the man for trying to change the direction some of these boys were headed. With that being said I commend him for sending those home who felt they were bigger than the program. It’s not always about w’s & l’s. He's trying to make boys into men. Once he rids that locker room of those cancer’s and boys with their own agendas , he can start really coaching.
There was a photo of him screaming at the kids during one game and the players looked completely disengaged. You can build accoubtabilitity and discipline without a blowhard. Screaming doesn't turn boys into men, it creates a culture of control and abuse. There are a lot of warning signs from this guy and everyone seems content to ignore them.

Bowden was the tallest midget in a long line of pretty poor coaches. I'll give you that much. I'm sorry to hear that the best you think Akron can do is win ~40% of its games over the long run. You must think extremely lowly of your alma mater.
This year 8 MAC teams won 6+ games and 7 MAC teams are projected to go bowling. At least 6 MAC teams go bowling each year. If Bowden made us just an above average MAC program we'd have 4-5 bowls in his 7 year run. We made a total of 2. We were a below average MAC team during his tenure.
Oh, here we go. Back to personal insults. Seriously? Let it go. You were wrong.
-
It's not just that we are 0-12, it's that almost every single game, mi us one, was a total embarrassment. This guy is not suddenly going to start making better coaching decisions.

We were! We were ONE year removed from a MAC-C game. Each season of the last 3-4 with Bowden, there was a serious chance for the Zips to be at the Top. Injuries and some damn bad luck was always a contributor as well. There are Ohio States and Michigans holding us back: Ohio's and Toledo's. We're already in the Shadow of Four Big-10 Teams; share the exact same footprint with the entire division we play in; and Ohio/Toledo both have consistent success over us; and have proven success.
It's ludicrous to expect Akron to have above 500 every year or fire the coach mentality; because that mentality lands us with freaking 0-12. When Ohio has a down year or two they don't fire the coach. It's utter stupidity.
He had two winning seasons, the 7-7 season was a winning season prior to the post-season. Pretending it's not a "winning season" because they lost the MACC and Bowl game...I'll take that every 2-3 years over 0-12 with no hope or light at the end of the tunnel EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Ever other FBS team not in the MAC? Sure. Ohio wouldn't have. Frank Solich has had down years and they've kept trucking along with him. And how much succes have those other FBS schools had? Look at the freaking MAC, and every other conference where teams regularly change over coaches? Tennessee...Purdue...it's just utter stupidity! And we don't have 1/100th the name recognition they have!
Delusional. Delusional. Delusional. You are 100% correct, but too many foolishly believe that it just takes hiring some magic guy....without the brains to see truth fir what it is.
The way football continues to be cut at the U, why would anyone want to cone coach here, now?
