  1. The AK-OLDIES is an alumni spirit group that was formed independent of the University. Its name was modeled after The University of Akron's student fan club known as the AK-ROWDIES. The ROWDIES was created in 2005 to serve as the official wild and crazy student cheering section. Soon after its inception, talk among the alumni faithful began. At first, the idea was nothing detailed; just discussions amongst fellow alumni about how exciting it might be if they too had their own official spirit group. The idea came in the spring of 2007 after the Mid-American Conference Championship basketball game. Over the Spring and Summer of 2007, two alumni decided to take these concepts and form them into something tangible. After discussions with the ROWDIES and notifying the U of A Alumni Association and Athletic Department, the group was formed. Before long, the AK-OLDIES name was adopted. Hats and t-shirts were designed and printed at a cost to its members. On August 19, 2007, the AK-OLDIES launched its inaugural membership drive on the club's Web site, http://www.akoldies.org/. The AK-OLDIES is excited to support the University and its athletic program, in addition to promoting fellowship within the alumni community and friends of The University of Akron.
  2. Here's a good tailgating tip.If you're looking to save some bucks...don't buy those over-priced tailgating flagpoles you see on some of the Web sites. Here's what I did...go up to Home Depot or Lowes, buy a telescoping pole that you clean windows with and use that as your flag pole.Simple and costs about $25 instead of the $90 to $125 they charge on the Web. In addition, you can hoist that baby about 20 feet into the air.Now lets see those Blue & Gold colors waving in the wind!!!
  3. Lots of good tips and recipies on tailgating.comhttp://www.tailgating.com/
  4. A big thank you to Zipsnation for providing this forum for the AK-OLDIES, the new Alumni spirit group for The University of Akron. We're hoping all you UA alums will sign up.The Web site is up and running, and soon, we'll be able to link you from these very pages. In the meantime, we look forward to your involvement, input and enthusiasm! Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks and Go Zippers!
  5. That's the Port Authority parking lot.Might be a good option.Close to the Warehouse District night spots too.I used to park there for Browns games at the old Stadium.
  6. I think the Muny lot is going to be very busy with the air show.I would get there early, park up on the mall, then walk across the bridge to the stadium.Tailgating? I hear there is some kind of University sponsored buffet on Mall C, between City Hall and the Old Courthouse on Lakeside Ave.This one is dicey for tailgating....in addition to the air show, the Indians also have a 7:05 game with the White Sox at the Jake.Downtown going to be a bit crazy.Maybe go to a surface lot ...pay the guy for two spots and pull out the grill. That's what a lot of people do for the Indians games...especially on opening day. A bit anticeptic...yes...but we are in downtown Cleveland.
  7. I'd rather hear the games on 640...the signal is a mother during the day, and at least can cover all of Akron at night.
  8. RadioZip, Congratulations!!It will be great to hear discussion about the game.I just hope I'll be able to pick it up at night.Get those hamsters running a little faster in that transmitter! How'd you get the gig? You've done radio before?
  9. yes, the University's Alumni Web site.Click here and then click on "Fun Stuff"http://www.uakron.onlinecommunity.com/I believe you have to register to see it.I you are an alum, it should be no problem...doesn't cost anything. They also have a neat Zippy Screensaver on there.
  10. You bet.We will mail shirts to everyone...unless you live down the street ;-)Just put all the information that is requested on the "join" page. There is no charge for shipping. Thanks again.
  11. I wish I could take one of those up I-77 everyday.Just got back from Disney. Can't imagine why monorails aren't in more cities. It's efficient and doesn't take a lot of space.
  12. Maybe at my advanced age it just seems longer.
  13. Interesting that the first two Patriot Bowls happend to be with Akron and Can't, which is probably their best chance for a larger crowd.Who will they try for next...BG? Someone else close?I can see this getting ungly when one of the Michigans get scheduled...or Ball State.
  14. Any word if they're going to start a bus service at UA?Seems like a long walk from Quaker Square to Olin Hall.Perhaps some type of campus shuttle service would be in order.
  15. Thanks Zen...I'm sure we could use the help.
  16. Thanks Bleacher...not sure if I'll be at the Army game yet....kids, you know. First Rubber Bowl game for sure...I can mail it to you or we can make arrangements...just PM me. I'm on the west side.Thanks...zip81
  17. Thanks MightyZip.We look forward to your membership one day.I would also like to thank FeartheRoo. He has put in just as much time, engergy and $$$.It's a labor of love. We just like our school and know many of you do too!!!
  18. Well there's been some talk, but it's finally here...introducing the AK-OLDIES.It's a UA Alumni spirit group, which has a mission of:1. Having fun2. Supporting the ZipsIf it ever stops being fun...I'm out!For a $12 fee, you get an AK-OLDIES t shirt with your membership...optional hats are $10.We don't have any annual fees at this point...don't know if we ever will. We just want to get this thing going.Since we're so close to football season, we'd like to distribute the shirts and hats at the first Rubber Bowl game to save postage. If you just can't wait, which I totally understand, just e-mail us and we'll make arrangements. There is only a slight mark up to pay for the Web site..postage if needed and to purchase more shirts and hats. Two of us alums have put up our own money to get it off the ground. Nobody is making anything off of this...strictly non-profit.We are coordinating with the Alumni Asso.We want to have tailgate parties off the bat...who know where the future will take us.Anyone who wishes to help is welcome.A Web site has been put together, and it looks rather good if I do say so myself.AK-OLDIES.org website featuresClub description: The AK-OLDIES are a proud group of University of Akron alumni that is dedicated to supporting ZIPS athletics. 19. Rubber Bowl Memories....Youngstown Mooney vs. Warren Western Reserve for the AAA state championship 1972.I was broadcasting a City Series double header Friday night at the Bowl when the fog was so thick you couldn't even see the field from the pressbox. That was an interesting game. One team was Akron North...can't remember the other.Being in the student card section.Playing intramural flag football at the Bowl while a student. They would split the field up into three fields going sideline to sideline...rug burns...ouch!All the St. V - Cuyahoga Falls football games in the early to mid 70's.And last, but not least...Monsters of Rock...around 1986. We'd rob our Mom's purse to see Matallica!!!
  20. Mike....good move.Believe me....good move!If this hurts anyone, it's the ABJ.Another nail in the coffin for an Akron daily destined to follow 23 Newsday.
  21. So what's wrong with being a college town? The city already has hotel chains asking about the land that UA gave them.I'd rather be a college town than a run down former tire making town. The U is brething new life into the city.
  22. Johnny...The Western Illinois game was 1979...the Acme-Zip game I do believe.I was in the press box that night and the card section looked great to me.
  23. Hi Johnny....don't know why you're not seeing the pix.I think others are due to the fact that they're commenting on them.I see them OK.In any event...here's a link to the picture...let me know if you eventually see it.Thanks...http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q68/don160/rock.jpg
  24. Sorry, I have to make one more post to avoid the mark of the devil. Thanks
  25. I don't think there is any way in H-E double hockey sticks that they would move the HOF game out of Canton. With the way the Canton community supports the HOF, there would be wholesale slaughter in the streets if this were to happen. Besides, the people who plan the HOF are all from Canton. No way they'd move the game to Akron.I also think it's cool to have the game played next to the Hall. Fawcett isn't THAT bad.And even if it were a possibility...I wouldn't want to see this happen.
