According to the Indianapolis Star, the Zips have made an offer to a kid from Carmel, IN for basketball. At the same time, he says Purdue has made him a football offer.Gee, what to do?Carmel is a major Indiana high school football power.http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti...8/1057/SPORTS02

Tom:My Kraut, Mick friend...I understand your request...and I've never been one to refuse an accomodation. However, before we embark on this endeavor I need to know one thing -- are you with us on these things we have to do -- are you in?If not, you can take your mistress and get the hell out of here!I understand that your client likes to hear bad news as soon as possible. And I'll only tell you this once...never let anyone outside the family know what you are thinking! The Don

Zip Alum - if you are going to try and make a point about spelling, GRAMMAR, and punctuation, you may want to run your post through spell-check first. Your post has 5 typos in it and is difficult to read. I will help you a bit and I don't have a minor in English...... grammer = grammarAyone = anyonebeleive = believegramatically = grammatically One more...not to pile on or anything.Internet is always capitalized, according to the Associated Press style book. While we're on the topic, Web site is two words with Web capitalized.

Where is Pints?Back in the dark ages, pre Zip Strip, all we had were the Sun, Towne House, The Zip Varsity Inn, Mitch's, Armadillo and Wannemakers over on Perkins St.The Bucket Shop, The Other Bar and Annebelle's in Highland Sq were always hopping too.To be honest, we probably hit the Can't bars more often. Loft, JB's, Filthy McNasty's, Rays, Mothers, The Deck.

sgm, this is all I personally need to know.Well done.

I think this thread is very appropriate...for the smack & Jokes board, which is where it exists.Personally, I will never forget all the sh!t I heard at Columbus Community College when we played down there in '01.Whats a Zip?Are they Division I?Is Akron in Ohio? They could care less we are an Ohio school. I could care less that THEY are an Ohio school. If they win or lose, it's no skin off my Ashtabula! The only thing about OSU I like is the fact that their coach is a UA graduate and a class act. Other than that, they can fall in to the Olentangy for all I care.

Newspaper had an article today that Huggy is getting a five year-$5 million contract.See my earlier post about $$$.

Listen, I've had to hear it from many Akron fans for way too long that the Rubber Bowl is this amazing piece of concrete over there; and that it's nicer than YSU's """I-AA""" Stadium. Well they are wrong, i work with about 10 Zip Alums who pester me about sports every day of the week. I know I shouldn't take my anger out on you guys, but I have to say I am!LOL... And I know the Rubber Bowl was aa nice stadium back in the day, and it's too bad its in the condition it is in today. To say the least, your comments are redundant. So just save your venom for the work crowd. It's very tiresome here. You come off like you have a giant chip on your shoulder, plus, an inferiority complex that can't be healed. If you must vent, do it on your own board with people who will be sympathetic. Here, you just come off as a jerk.
-
Is YSU going to do that to their stadium? If so, it is an improvement, but not something I would want for Akron. And why do you keep trying to provoke by putting down the Rubber Bowl?It opened in 1940 for crying out loud.At one time, the Rubber Bowl was a great facility...when YSU was playing in Austintown Fitch High School. So, why don't you just back off?You are not doing yourself or your school a favor.

I have found that, in sports, $$$ ruins everything...which is why I'm not the fan I used to be.

According to Wiki...born in Morgantown...raised in Gnadenhutten.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Huggins

I'm shocked.Wow!Through all his troubles, I've still liked him and given him the benefit of the doubt. It's going to be difficult reconciling this one.Did he have an out in his K State contract that would allow him to leave this early...or did they just let him out of it?

I forget why everyone said it couldn't be done ... but it sure would be nice. During my student days (shortly after radio was invented) WZIP broadcast all the Zip's games. Back in the real dark ages, when WZIP was WAUP, we did do all the games...Football and Basketball...home and road.We went to:Boise St.Temple (The Vet)E. IllinoisN. IowaMorehead St (Kentucky)Big travel year that year...and we did them all on the Great 88!I'm sure the reason WZIP doesn't do the games is $$$$$.UA wants a station that can play commercials to air the games so they can charge rights. And any commercial station that pays rights wants an exclusive deal.
-
WZIP has a non-commercial license. They can't even play UA spots. The only thing they can air are underwriting announcements like PBS TV stations and PSAs (public service announcements). When I did the games in '79, we got Tremonte Distributing to contribute $1,000 to offset the costs of the broadcasts, so the only recognition we could give them were underwriting announcements at the beginning and end of the broadcast because of our non-commercial license.
-
Well, number one, WZIP is a non commercial station. Since it is owned by the U, there would be no broadcast rights, no commercials. If WZIP did air the games, I don't think I would welcome it if I was a commercial station paying rights and selling commercials. I would want exclusivity. Why WAUP did the games at the same time as WAKR I couldn't tell you other than it was a different era.

both 640 and 1350 have directional signals, but you would think you would get them in "Summit County.Perhaps the answer is putting the Zips on 1590 WAKR, like they used to be. WZIP would be another good alternative. They come in pretty good since they got a side mount way up on a TV tower in Copley. When I was going to the U, the Zips used to be on both stations...WAKR and WAUP.
-
Actually....how high an antenna is has nothing to do with the power of an AM station.Having said that, it has everything to do with the power of an FM or TV station.1350 is a directional pattern with a nighttime mode that makes it difficult to hear. In addition, 1350 is not a very powerful frequency.Having said that, 640 is a great frequency. The only other 640 is KFI in Los Angeles. It has a nighttime mode, but still much better than 1350...and it is being wasted on Can't State. How sad is that?

More on the format change on Ohio Media Watch:http://www.ohiomedia.blogspot.com/Don't look for any more local talk from these jokers...only more flesh on their Web site home page.

Was Joe's show on WHLO or 1350?I get them mixed up.

Did you hear that Taco Bell bought the naming rights to the Liberty Bell, which will now be known as Taco Liberty Bell?
-
I wouldn't look for any great infusion of local sports talk. They're going Sporting News Radio...all satellite all the time.Local sports talk costs money and these stations live on a shoestring budget....sad to say.I would think the most we could expect would be more local programming wrapped around the Akron games...but that would be about it.

No need to go off the deep end here. Not trying to speak for blueandgold, but my impression of the post was that it's a shame we can't see the band high-stepping again.I did not infer an implication that the band director should actually be replaced.Although, I too, would like to see the high stepping return.I've never been in a band and don't claim to be an expert. I'm just speaking from the viewpoint of a fan. Most of the years since I've been watching UA football, we've had a great band.Is the band playing to please the audience or themselves? I would think it would be a little of both. One thing that I believe should be dropped is calling the band "Ohio's Pride."I don't think ANYONE has EVER belived that one. I think Akron's Pride would be a bit more believeable.
