No Doubt. The reputation of a University among prospective students and donors means everything, And the press certainly has an impact on shaping that. We're going to have to suffer the consequences until we can rebuild that image. It may be wishful thinking to speculate that a change in leadership will change all of that. I hope it does. But, I wouldn't count on any kind of instant "they're fine now...they just had a bad president" type of impact. I really think it's going to take some time.

Zips MAC Tourney Runs vs. LeBron's NBA Finals Runs
skip-zip replied to skip-zip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
You might be missing the point here. I was curious how his situation resonates in comparison, simply in terms of whether the weight of achievement should be places on getting to that point year after year? Or, whether that accomplishment is somewhat negated by the failures in the final few games? Sure, we're talking NBA vs. MAC, but the discussions I'm seeing among the "talking heads" is so eerily similar to the discussion we have here regarding championship appearances vs. titles. -
Zips MAC Tourney Runs vs. LeBron's NBA Finals Runs
skip-zip replied to skip-zip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I think someone would need to go back to at least 2 or 3 of those Miami teams, which I am sure were favorites, but I could be wrong. But surely, all 3 of the Cavs teams he took to the Finals were not the favorite. -
I'm interested to see how you guys see this. With LeBron's 6 straight Title appearances, and the strong possibility that he will be 2-5 in those Finals appearances in about a week, it's prompting a lot of talk about whether this is a tremendous mark of consistent success, or a record of "collapsing" on the biggest stage, or anything in between. It's reminding me of our discussions about Akron's 10 year run of MAC Final 4's and MAC Title Game runs, despite our 3-5 record in those title games. So, how does everyone see this? Do you see the LeBron situation as any different than the Zips? I think LeBron had some of these failures with Cavs teams that were underdogs, and with his just-arrived year with the Heat. But still, if plenty of people are focusing on LeBron's appearances as a great accomplishment, shouldn't we be focusing on the Zips consistent run of "title appearances" the same? And not focusing so much on the results of those title games as any kind of "failure"?

It'll definitely be interesting to see if it goes down that way.

Amen. You've got it. Sometimes the most obvious solution is the one that gets the most minimum focus. That needs to change.

Unfortunately, I think that's the major byproduct of all of this, moving forward. It's going to take some time before confidence in the direction of the University is restored, which will likely continue to hurt "giving" for quite some time. It will easily wipe out any savings that were sought by budget cuts. Again, moves that seemed to be "necessary" will produce negative consequences.

Exactly.

I haven't touched on the Proenza legacy myself, but since it's being discussed again, I have to say that I don't have any major problem with what was happening. As far as I am concerned, Akron was indeed in need of a physical makeover. We didn't build the Taj Mahal on campus. And frankly, there was more that COULD have been done, and wasn't. He made a business decision to make the product more attractive to prospective buyers. And enrollment was increasing pretty substantially, wasn't it?

"Ohio's Polytechnic University" Memoriam
skip-zip replied to skip-zip's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
What can I say Scott? I had a premonition maybe? -
Very good assessment of Tressel. I sure hope everyone here holds Akron to a much higher standard than Youngstown. I can't wait to see Scarborough go, and will only give him a break, to some extent, in that he instituted some bold moves to try to move the University forward. They were just not the right moves, and seemed to be done without enough analysis, or regard for the consequences.

I thought of a lot of candidates, but one clearly stands out. John Clark

Financing Cost? In CSU's case, decades later, I'm sure those costs are all likely in the past. The cost to maintain and operate that indoor arena on a day-to-day basis has to be the issue.

I'd guess that an outdoor football field with stands and artificial grass doesn't even compare to the operating costs of an indoor arena.

Now that the tagline has been officially nixed, according to the ABJ article, I was wondering if anyone has any postmortem memories to share of this very expensive and ill-fated campaign. It's sad, in a way. A very exciting era in the history of the U of A is gone, before we even got to know it. Actually, the money spent on this is infuriating. You wonder how some people still have their jobs.
-
I'm with you on that. I think it could amount to something better than normal. Certainly better than it looked just a short time ago. But at this point, we're seeing a big-time program, another somewhat recognizable program to some people, and maybe what's looking to me like a pretty crappy tournament. So right now, I'm still on "wait and see" mode until I see more, as far as comparing it to other seasons.

Last year should have been a good indication of his chances. Strahan was just inducted, and he's one spot ahead of Jason on the All-Time Sack list. Jason is #6 all time, and there's even plenty of guys behind him who have already been inducted. Just one stat, but I think it's important enough that he's sure to get in at some point.

Check the notes at the bottom of this article from last month, where a question was asked to the County Exec. about the new arena. http://www.akron.com/akron-ohio-community-news.asp?aID=30301 I guess this adds to the reason why JAR renovations are the inevitable short-term solution.

Jatavis Brown's NFL Draft Position
skip-zip replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
No kidding. Just a little inside story about his childhood, from a San Diego writer who's only known who Jatavis is for a couple of weeks. Maybe paying attention to a few more Akron games and a few less OSWho games would be advised. -
Zips Football History Thread - Players and Games

It's a problem that's old, but still continues to grow. More and more resources are needed all the time to stay relevant and competitive in college athletics. It's a shame. College athletics should have never been allowed to evolve into what it is today. -
Meanwhile, this paints a pretty encouraging picture as well. http://www.ohio.com/news/local/moody-s-downgrades-outlook-for-university-of-akron-to-negative-1.682056

This is all reminding me that I am so old that I can remember having the following in my car, in this order: Radio Only Radio and 8-Track Radio and Cassette Radio and CD and currently Radio, CD, and can play iPhone tunes. In spite of all of the changes, the Radio has always been the constant. And now I wonder if it's possible that it can actually disappear?
-
Wow, this discussion has gotten interesting. I suppose that MUSIC LISTENING on the radio has dwindled tremendously during the electronic age. But, I'd guess that there might still be a good market for Talk and Sports, but surely the use of the actual physical RADIO has to be declining rapidly.

One of the Radio stations used to broadcast live from out in the tailgate lot at the Rubber Bowl. I don't remember which one. Actually, that's one thing that would be more difficult today, since everyone is scattered all over. But, why couldn't they come to the Zips Fest area?
