For me, that should have sent PN to the bench a long time ago. So, I will hold Moore to the same standard.Remember...he hasn't had the luxury of throwing against EMU, Buffalo, Can't or a 1-AA team yet either, which better be enough to bring those numbers up significantly. I'll say this again, even though I do NOT want to be put in the same category of those making excuses for our QB for the last two years. But....most people think that our protection and dropped ball problems were worse than ever Saturday night. Losing all of our skill guys, and a few OLs HAD to be a big concern to all of us going into the season. Our backs are having problems even holding onto dump passes. And Carter and LaFrance suddenly must be looking like All-Americans to us, compared to what we saw last weekend. But again, in my opinion, I could see a QB using this as an excuse as to why his numbers should be better. But, regardless of the circumstances, I still believe that somewhere in the 50-60 range should be an ABSOLUTE MINIMUM for a college QB.

That's awesome!! Nice job Rowdies!!My group spent our rain delay drinking again, and betting on how many people would be left when the game resumed.I must say, a decent amount of people stuck around. Some folks were guessing only 500 would be left. That wasn't the case at all.

Being "poorly coached" shouldn't cause you to be pushed around like a high school team for 60 minutes. I'm sure we don't have the talent to compete with a team like Temple right now, but overall, the problem seems to be some kind of combination of both.

Big Zips.....You mean, your neighbor is talking about the guy who, after only two games, has already been called out by an opposing coach, and almost caused OSWho to lose their first game in decades to a MAC school?Unless I'm wrong, he has 2 games of experience in his career as a head coach, which leaves the fact that he was the faithful follower of one of the most notable liars and cheaters of our era as the bulk of his resume?I'm really COMPLETELY confused as to why anyone holds the assumption that "he was an assistant at Ohio State....so that must make him a good coach". We had one of those guys here already for 9 years, and to say the least, it didn't work out so well. I've talked to some of these brainwashed OSWho robots in bars who keep saying, "You better start watching Ken+ State....they have a great coach now". And I just want to laugh hysterically, and shout "STOP THE NONSENSE"!! Please, someone make some sense and tell me why these guys are judged to be great future coaches because they were at OSWho? Does that mean we should automatically go ahead and tap the assistants at places like Auburn, Alabama, Florida and LSU because they will be even better? This isn't intended to support our current coach, but rather to refute the coaching criteria that the general public is using to determine what will make Akron successful as a football program. If there was a known formula that determines whether an assitant will be a successful head coach, everyone would use it, and everyone would be successful.

1,000-1,500 season tickets (more than generous)2,000 single game tickets1,000 Students (Generous)=4,000-4,500plus 2,000 tickets possibly given to sponsors and your have max 6,500. I just don't see how over 15,000 ticekts were sold to this game. Hell if they can sell that many to this team more power to them. They are making numbers up at this point because they will have a hard time doing it at the end of the season when 500 people are in the stands. Expect a number right around 14,500 for the VMI game.Max, as far as I know, there's some very strict rules as to what you can count as "paid attendance", which would not include tickets that are given away. If the only thing schools had to do was inflate their numbers, without any standards, restrictions or penalties, then nobody would ever have a problem reaching the minimum attendance mark required, right? And since EMU reports attendance around 5,000, I would guess that inflating your numbers isn't an advisable thing to try to do.Remember, many large companies in the area purchase large blocks of tickets to Akron sporting events. Heck, I even know owners of small businesses who buy groups of tickets to several sports, and often do not use them, or are unable to give them away to people who might use them. And those still count, even if they don't show up. When a family of 4 buys tickets, but little Johnny gets sick and they don't show up, those count as well. It's no secret. Football did this on a very large scale back in 1985 to get our attendance to the level needed to jump to D-1A.Still no way were 15,000+ tockets sold. For the most part, I am just sharing what I know, and trying to get additional information from someone in the know.If attendance numbers can easily be inflated or "made up", why do we have the ever-ending drama to see which schools are meeting the required attendance mark?

I think I see some confusion again about how attendance is counted, including something about being able to count some "alottment" of students.Unless something has changed in the last 30 years, here is what I believe is always counted as "paid attendance", which is the figure you see reported.1) Tickets Sold2) Students who walk through the gate with their student ID (they count as "paid" because free admission to sporting events is included in student fees).

That's my guess. Because it's the MAC, there will be some close games that are winnable. But, even if we win more than one, I can't say if I would automatically think that we are an improved team over last year.

Boy, has the bar been lowered. For a 3rd-year soph, a sub-200 yard. zero TD performance doesn't wow me.The bar is justifiably lowered when you've been watching one of the worst rated QBs in D-1A for the past two years. Please note how my post was not cluttered with "bad OL...bad WR" excuses, even though many feel as if that problem was worse than ever last night. And maybe the biggest point to note is that the drops were on very well-thrown balls. Regardless of who won the starting job this year, I will stick to my consistent point that a QB should be at a minimum of 50%-60% in completions. And I have already indicated that we need to see more production from Moore, and that the numbers don't meet my expectations for a Zips QB. But, I'll take a 200 yard passing game (which easily could have been 250+), improved poise and decision making, and some scrambling and running ablility against a good opponent in his 2nd start as a somewhat positive sign in an otherwise ugly start to the season. How many games over the last two years have we struggled to just reach 100 passing yards? Moore's performance also carried a QB rating over 100, when we spent last season with a 95 average efficiency rating against ALL opponents, good or bad. So, yes, the bar certainly has been lowered. I also want to comment on what a few others have said about changing the offensive sets for a not-so-tall QB. I'm watching Gradkowski and McCoy on TV today. Both guys are 6'-1" tall. I seem to see a lot of rollouts, and quick drops. When both have those huge NFL DLs in their face, it's difficult. So, although I have never coached football, I sure hope someone on our staff is paying attention to this game.

Pretty close to what a lot of my group was thinking. Except for the word "slightly". Most of us felt that the only really bad, off-target pass he threw all night was the one time he stepped up in the pocket in the 3rd quarter and inexplicably threw a pass way behind and over the head of a receiver running a crossing route right in front of him. I don't expect a new QB to solve all of our problems, but the only thing we've all been clamoring for is someone who can at least put the ball in position to be caught with a relatively good amount of consistency. That isn't asking much, and I think we might have someone who can do that now. Hopefully, at the very least, the days of so many short passes landing at the feet of receivers, or 10 feet over their head, is over.Something else that hasn't been mentioned a lot yet is his poise. I see pretty good composure in this guy, which surprises me a bit for a guy in his 2nd career start....and also surprising considering the pressure he was under all night. I hated seeing him taking those sacks, but it appeared that they were good decisions in most of those cases, considering the alternatives. I could be wrong, but I don't see him being a guy who would likely throw a pass right to a DL while being sacked in the end zone (WMU game last year) or try to shovel the ball out of the end zone while being sacked (Ken+ game last year). So, I think we appear better off in this respect as well. The OL and WRs are what they are. But as all of you know, I don't think that's an excuse for at least hitting the 50%-60% threshold every game, no matter what the circumstances. So, I need to see his productivity increase. But, the increased accuracy and decision making ability is certainly a refreshing change. So is a near-200 yard passing game against one of the best teams that we'll play all year, in his 2nd start. I hope he can grow from here. By the way, that fumble should have been an incomplete pass, from what we were seeing on replay in our secction. What did everyone else think they saw? That ended up being a HUGE call that broke the game open for Temple.

You must not remember the end of the Faust years. You think that was bad? His successor losing 21 more games than he won over the next 9 years just about drove me away forever. However, I thought Gardner Webb was really the all time low. And it could only get better from there. But, the disappointing thing right now that I'm seeing only minor indications here and there that we are moving in a better direction. It seems like an endless cycle of 2 good plays followed by 3 bad plays. I see some effort out here, and some fight in these guys. But, not enough people are doing enough right to make it all come together with the level of consistency needed to have some success.

Two excellent points.

I don't think so. But I think it does tell us that when you are one of the worst teams in the MAC, a good team in the Sun Belt is likely going to be a very tough matchup for you. I'm sure I am not the only Zips fan who may have looked at this game as one of the more winnable games on our schedule this year. Ouch.

I see it....and I have the same feeling.

So he should have tweeted formally, "..."The University of Akron has a great one"? Idon'thinkso Good point. As much as I try to avoid the old name, and encourage others to do the same, it is a lot easier to say.Maybe we'll someday reach the point where people just say AKRON. Places like ALABAMA can do it. They don't have to worry about whether people are saying Alabama U. or The Univ. of Alabama. That would be nice.

Lets hope he sticks around awhile, and keeps tweeting about us. He has to be the biggest "celebrity" out there with connections to our beloved University.Ok....I have to say it.......Mr. James, pleeeeez call it The Univ. of Akron.

I loved Bum because "he couldn't kick the door in!".... here's another one...."How do you win? By getting average players to play good and good players to play great. That's how you win."Your quotes in the video Keener, same, but different. That is that is how I remembered it. Bum said of Don Shula "he can beat yorn with hisin and turn around and beat hisin with yorn". I have always been a Dolpin fan..from 1st win long long aga. Bum was graet even though he had te Dolphins # in the big games. Then again...he had the best player too.Did I just detect someone while posting on Zips Nation? Come on Doug. Saturday is still a long way off. But, if you were able to start early, kudos to you -
I don't care what the point spread is, or what Temple did to us last year. This is the MAC. Every MAC game should be winnable, and no MAC team ever looks like a powerhouse every single week. Unfortunately, we got blown right off the field a few times last year by several of the better MAC teams, and that leaves me completely confused about what to expect on Saturday. Lets hope the days of being "way down" were short lived, and we can at least return to some respectable play against some of the better teams in our own crappy league.

The coaches who preceded Saban and Meyer must have done a wonderful job of stocking their rosters with great players so that Nick and Urban could be so successful right out of the gate.I think this is a good point, Zipmeister. Yes, some coaches are special. I think we're fortunate to have one of those type of people running our basketball program. But, you can't win with bad players. Something had to be there before they arrived. They certainly didn't magically turn a bunch of bad football players into winners. -
"High Major?" Does that mean that the MAC is a one bid conference again?Could it be that they may be giving this "honorable distinction" to the conferences that do not have to compete in a play-in game? Geez thanks. It changes nothing for me, unless it means that the top team that does not win the MAC tournament will have a better chance of being considered for an at-large bid.
-
Ianello could lose every game this year and he will still be the coach. Unless some rich booster comes up with the money to pay the remainder of his contract, we are stuck with him. UA does not have the money to get rid of him. Its a classic Catch-22 situation. That's how I feel. That's why I don't waste too much time thinking about it.
-
I couldn't care less where he is listed on their pre-season depth chart. He is a big-time, prized recruit, and was their #1 running back on Saturday, and had 19 carries. And was reinserted into the game on the final series to carry the football, when Akron was in bench-clearing mode. You won't find me saying that they needed to "take a knee".
-
I agree with you about the blitzing, but I am just as fired up about feeding your starting running back the ball on consecutive carries at the end of a blowout with a bunch of bench players in the game. Maybe they weren't going to throw the ball, but possibly they were going to find a more low-profile way to get to the end zone, and "accidentally" put a 48 on that scoreboard? What's surprising to me in the last few days is that OSWho fans I know are actually questioning their new coach's decision. And that kind of reaction is a complete shock to me, coming from people who I've known to defend anything that happens with the red and silver. It sure smells a little rotten, at the very least. And nobody says that the common courtesy that usually exists between coaches at the end of a game has to be followed. But, It'll be interesting to see what he does in the next couple of weeks, because it appears as if he is really trying to make a statement as a coach to try to gain a job after this year. So, with his lack of experience as a head coach, and his motivation to prove himself, I think he may show that he is going to keep the pedal very close to the floor for 4 quarters with future opponents as well.

Suggestion for the Ak-Rowdies
skip-zip replied to zips4ever2008's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
My question would be....would you really want to add to the negative stigma of soccer in American as an insignificant Euro-sport? As I've run around bragging about Akron being national champs in soccer since December, this is normally the response I get from people outside of the Akron soccer community. Wouldn't european flags just add fuel to that fire, and place a major obstacle in front of our efforts to make the sport, especially at the college level, more appealing to American sports fans? -
Everybody should be able to make a ton of money than. We are only 14 point underdogs. I'm not too upset about that. I was afraid I'd be sickened to see that we were a 20+ point underdog, at home, to a team in our own conference.
