I'm enjoying this thread every week, unfortunately. 1) We were still in the game in the first half. 2) Defense gave up 30 instead of 50. 3) We finally have an opponent that we played better in 2010 than 2009. 4) Did PN actually complete half of his passes? I think that might be the 2nd time this year. Impressive. 5) One game closer to the showdown with Buffalo.

Were we cursed by getting some major TV time on the Cleveland news yesterday????

Tressel's asst., Luke Fickell wanted UA job
skip-zip replied to ZipRoo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Zach. We agree on a lot of things, and I do see some of your points. But, I can't quite see how someone would view their resumes as "similar" when I believe one of them has about 25 years of coaching experience, and the other has about 10 years. And I am no defender of Rob's by any means. Frankly, I wish just about anyone was here now instead of him. -

You remind me of someone who used to post similar language on ZN.O, but completely disappeared from the forum many months ago. I don't know Dave. I just wondering when the poster can dumb himself down after he realizes he went to such great effort with bold type and underlines to hammer my post when I was commenting about Luke's demand as a HC, and not Rob's. -
Temple's program can give UA some hope
skip-zip replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Football
I hear that. Even in the darkest days of a program that has a coaching change, you often see that the new coach has something special, and that there are a number of things to feel good about for the future. I see none of that at Akron right now. Like I've said before, I feel the same way I felt during LOs first season. I just don't see anything to hang our hat on right now. -
Great footage. Thanks. An old man like me can't stay up that late to watch it myself To answer your questions: 1) You'd have to depend on the Cleveland media to give more exposure to something in Akron. 2) It's soccer.

Tressel's asst., Luke Fickell wanted UA job
skip-zip replied to ZipRoo's topic in Akron Zips Football
That's the question I always ask myself!! And what happened to all of the people who wanted nothing short of an experienced Head Coach? And now some of you want this young guy with no HC experience at all? And his title would indicate that he's a position coach, and some sort of assistant coordinator? Or shares the job? Heck, Rob was an Interim Head Coach, if titles mean anything. And has a lot more experience, if that means anything. I originally got involved in this thread because the original poster seemed to be indicating that somehow Luke was light years ahead of ICoach in his qualifications for this job. I don't see it at all. Are other schools after his services? I see some of the things that Big Zip points out. And it's certainly much easier in hindsight to point out the things we don't like about Rob. But, I am not seeing this no-brainer of a candidate in Luke that some people seem to see. -

you mean the "cupcake teams" that OSU killed and we in turn got killed by? We essentially play OSU's cupcake schedule...difference is it's 9 out of our 12 games each year and not 4 or 5. Actually it's 12 out of our 12 games. Every single team Akron plays would be a cupcake to a top 20 team. Certain irrational fans don't see that. Tell that to Kentucky, who knocked off the #10 team in the country and nearly knocked off Auburn in the last few weeks. Or, Syracuse, NIU and Temple, who are all now in the Top-50 in RPI. Yes, many teams we play would be cupcakes to a Top 20 team, but to put every team we play into that category is just a huge exaggeration. Kentucky is the only one that even makes sense there. And even they got beat up quite a bit. Every team can play a good game or 2, but an entire season tells the story. Syracuse, NIU and Temple would be smashed by most of the top 20. The only chance they would have is if the other team was on a down week. Which does happen. Upsets happen. Guess WVU must have had a down week... Every team does. I'm just confused how all of this supports your "Every single team Akron plays would be a cupcake to a Top-20 team" quote. -

I share some of your frustration, but I don't quite see it as a day-and-night difference. This guy has never been a head coach either, is much younger, and has been a position coach himself, and more recently a "co-defensive coordinator", whatever that means. It says on his coaching record that he was a line coach here about 10 years? I don't remember that. However, I don't make a practice out of following the careers of Cowlumbus State football players. -
Seeing that we are playing TEMPLE......I just PRAY that it's not a repeat of last week. On a brighter note....Buffalo is still on the schedule

He has the potential to be much better than just "All-MAC". He's not the same kid we saw last year at all. I know what you're saying. I saw a different player at the end of the year too. But you brought up the important word..."Potential". Look at the Center who made the list. He got talked about a lot as a freshman. Why? Because he averaged in double-digits in scoring, and almost double-digits in rebounds as a freshman. He came out producing right out of the gate. Zeke didn't do that. But, there's still 3-years to go. I think a lot of people, including a lot of Zips fans, are still waiting to see more from Zeke. When that happens, he'll get his recognition.

MLS Growth is Good for Akron Soccer
skip-zip replied to bobbyake's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Geez. Guys, I've been on this planet a long time, and certainly can't count how many times I've heard one of these phrases.... 1) More kids play soccer than any other sport. 2) Soccer is the biggest sport in the world. 3) Some day, soccer is going to "catch on" in the USA. I've been watching sports since I was a kid in the 60s, and I've been hearing these phrases ever since, and one thing has never changed, AMERICANS don't like soccer!! We watch the World Cup like we watch the Olympics, and root for our country. Does that mean you can say that we have all become Water Polo fans?? Or Equestrian Horse Riding fans?? Give me a break. On the other hand, I'd LOVE to see soccer become HUGE. Yes, it would make Zips Soccer's accomplishments gain some big national interest among sports fans. It's just not gonna happen. -
Using 2004 as the base year, let's look at it on a year-to-year basis by winning percentage with a plus for every year where the winning percentage improved and a minus where it fell: 2004 6-5 .545 2005 7-6 .538 - 2006 5-7 .417 - 2007 4-8 .333 - 2008 5-7 .417 + 2009 3-9 .250 - In only one of five seasons was there an improvement in winning percentage over the previous season, and that one was immediately followed by the lowest winning percentage of the JD era in his final season. Although not perfectly linear, I think that "slow downward spiral" is a reasonably accurate description if you allow for the occasional updraft in a general descent. Maybe slow downward trend would be a more accurate way to describe it. I was always disappointed that JD never followed up the bowl appearance with another good season over the next 4 years. But I think some people forget that in mid-November of 2008 we were in the middle of a multiple-overtime game at the Rubber Bowl against Buffalo with a chance to take control of the MAC East. I'd go crazy with excitement if we could even equal that position these days.

Sure could. But the silver lining on that cloud is..........Buffalo is Beatable

same professional sports market. Unfortunately. As unfortunate is the fact that we share a common tv market, which Cleveland controls, and has been using to piss on Akron for decades now. That's why it is so HUGE that LeBron drew the line in the sand between the two cities. We in Akron desperately need our own self-image. A self-image divorced from the old common assumption that Akron is simply Cleveland's little brother. LeBron's explicit comments that he is from Akron and not from Cleveland is HUGE for Akron's self-identity. Psychologically, this is indeed a very large, healthy and much needed step. +1

Really? If this situation would have produced a no-brainer success story at the D-1A level, as it seems you suggest, then please tell me why 25 years later the man is coaching at NAIA Walsh College?

PN actually completed half of his passes The STO sideline reporter. It didn't rain during the tailgating, which is now the highlight of my home football game experiences.
-
I'll have to try to find a way to hear some of that. I just hope it's not because I left early because the game turns into a blowout.
-
Yes, if it means we'll win more football games
-
Could also mean Louisiana-Monroe from the same conference. Any chance it could be LSU?
-
Please note on the other thread that I factored this exact scenario into my prediction

I blame Bush. Sounds good to me. Everyone else who is failing is blaming Bush.

In following the pattern of the Kentucky and OU games..... If Rodgers does NOT get into the game - WMU-30 Akron-3 If Rodgers gets into the game - WMU-30 Akron-10
