  1. I think you would get unanimous agreement on this phrase from everyone who is begging for personnel changes.
  2. Toledo beat him by picking him off FOUR times.. Time to step it up secondary! No kidding. Lets hope for 4 turnovers. But lets also hope the kid doesn't throw for over 400 yards again too.
  3. I think we've become accustomed to a few things, and I don't expect this year to be any different. 1) Akron will be good enough to win most of their conference games. 2) Ken+ will be good enough to win most of their conference games. 3) Someone else will have a nice run, and will contend also. How this all shakes out in the last couple of weeks of the season to decide the East regular season champ is anyone's guess.
  4. I've been thinking this should be the most winnable game in conference play thus far, besided Ken+. So,maybe that's not saying much. But, I don't think there is anything incredible about this WMU team as a whole. But, their passing game could turn it into a shootout, and I don't give us much chance to win that battle if PN is still running our passing game. And I see their QB is a sophomore also, completing 61% of his passes for a 260+ yards per game average. Makes me wanna
  5. Nicely is the least of our problems. He's a better QB than Rodgers. But the guy has no OL, and no WR's. Because he's apt to run, Rodgers may be a better QB for our present situation. I'd like to have seen him get a shot. But I'm under no illusions that changing a QB is anything but, to quote ZipsWin!, "rearranging chairs on the Titanic." I like this quote. ZipsWin, with your permission, can I use this in my personal and professional life? Seriously though, to me this is no longer an issue of which QB might be better. Although, I can't deny that PN has underperformed even my own low expecations for him. But, the much bigger issue is what's in the best interest of Akron football? And the reality is, Matt gets closer and closer to the end of his career as the weeks roll along. And if we leave him sit much longer, we will have boxed ourselves into a corner with only one option. And I don't want to see us put all of our eggs in one basket. Especially when that basket has a lot of holes in the bottom. We've seen Matt play very little in his career (2 full games), and he was productive against good teams in both of those games. I'd like to see if his abilities can help us. If he fails, PN is still an experienced 2nd option. But If we go much longer with PN, we won't have a 2nd option.
  6. Kudos to you GoZips for leading the charge. Come on folks!! Are we going to let the folks from Elon beat us? Elon? Make sure you get in your votes every day
  7. According to ICoach's comments in the ABJ article this morning. I know how I feel about this. I'm stunned. What do you guys think? I already had someone tell me that our coach must be blind.
  8. Sad, isn't it? Our most effective drive in the last 3-1/2 quarters of the Ken+ game was due to them bailing us out on a personal foul on an unconverted 3rd and 20-something play.....And a fake field goal. It appears that even those who had high hopes for this season and some of our players are even past the point of trying to rationalize things. There's simply a lot of very ineffective football players on this team, and they need to be replaced.
  9. Well, it's a good thing we don't have a fan base, otherwise they might get scared away. Sad, but true.
  10. Browns fans sure can cry up a river. We know how to burn it and the bridge over it too. And.....name a beer after it
  11. Looked like a benching to me. Nicely made a couple of decisions that clearly infuriated the coaching staff. One, early in Q1, was to throw the ball away, backwards, as he was being sacked on the 15 yard line. Obvious fumble that Akron luckily recovered, but at a loss of 8 yards. The second was an intentional grounding after leaving the pocket. He was yanked immediately after that call. How about throwing the ball away, but forgetting to throw it past the line of scrimmage? I gave him a chance despite everything I've seen and heard, and now I've really had enough.
  12. Handled himself well? I think one could say that he even did much better than that. I was really impressed with his poise and leadership under pressure, and he completed 70% of his passes!! I'm not a Browns fan, or a Steelers fan, but I liked what I saw. He's another example of a kid who might not physically look like an NFL QB, but he appears like he has the ability to get the job done! If the Browns fans are getting on this kid today, I think it's unjustified.
  13. I'm already comparing this to a similar period of futility. LO won only 8 games in his first 3 years. Not only did we keep him around, but he got a contract extension at some point, and we allowed him to stick around for 9 seasons, and had to live through nearly an entire decade of our football team losing 20 games MORE than we won. Lets not repeat this. If the coach doesn't "have IT", I sure hope we recognize it much sooner this time around.
  14. Yep. I really don't expect the media to be too interested in a Akron soccer game on a Saturday night against a bad opponent. But, I was stunned at the poor showing by UA students last night. However, it was entertaining watching OSWho get their butts kicked. I think they were already going to get a serious wake-up call about their lack of good competition when the BCS standings came out today, but this was enjoyable nonetheless. Now, we have to worry a lot less about them stealing all of the news coverage and fan support from the LOCAL D-1 COLLEGE now that their national title hopes are gone.
  15. After last night's loss, ICoach said something about evaluating every position on the team this coming week. Doesn't that seem like a major shift from all of the "we just need to get better" talk we've been hearing so far? I loved Allman's comments in the post game show about the QB position. I think he's right on the money.
  16. I think one glaring difference between us and the Temple teams of a few years ago is that we are losing with upperclassman starters. And we've already been blown out by a MAC team, and have the potential to see more of those before the misery subsides in late November. If we are that void of talent, I do want to see the younger guys start playing sooner rather than later. The question is, are these guys potentially better than the upperclassmen we have on the field now? If not, the misery could go on for quite a few years before we start to turn in another direction.
  17. Great to hear some of this. As this article points out, and I've been saying all along, this season comes down to one thing.......can we survive the losses on the front line? In order to do this, we need a better Zeke, Nik, and Brett McK. And getting anything at all out of Bardo and Brett McC for 5-10 min. or so per game would be a bonus. If we get that, I think we should be just as competitive in the MAC as we've been the last several years.
  18. This 1994 year came as a surprise to so many of us old timers. This followed a season where we had a surprising 2nd place finish, and a year where a lot of people were picking us to win the MAC. And the MAC was still playing as one division at the time, I believe. Nobody anticipated such a down year, although we had a lot of underclassman starters. That Ball State game is the one I refer to where we had a freshman QB who did not even start, but came in and broke an Akron single-game passing record. Quite a memorable game.
  19. Interesting. Thanks. If someone has the time, I'd really like to see how we stack up overall against other teams that made the I-A jump shortly after us, especially a couple of those Sun Belt teams since they've had to play similar competition since their move upward.
  20. I'd much rather see Cowlumbus State a few spots lower, so they could potentially have to come to Akron for a Quarterfinal match. Can you imagine the hostility towards that jerk who just about knocked Nagbe's head off? What a great night that could be. I'm just so amused that we've established such a superiority over that school down south that spends more money on athletics than any school in the country.
  21. Another week.....another complete lack of respect from the prognosticators. And these are against MAC EAST TEAMS!! I think I am gonna
  22. You're not much for trends I assume. It's true, Winter's career record at Wayne State currently stands at 32-38. But in the last 2 1/2 years, the record is 19-10. This is at a school that has an all-time winning percentage of 42.1%. Several have mentioned that they'd like to see him win something at the D-2 level before he would get serious consideration here. If he does manage to ever win a GLIAC title, it would be quite a feat. In that scenario, I believe we would have competition in hiring him. BTW, I found this to be surprising. Did anyone realize these two facts about Wayne State? 1) It's the 3rd largest university in Michigan. 2) Its endowment is $204 million!!! (UA's is only $133.3 million) Interesting data on Wayne State. I never would have guessed it. Understanding "trends" is exactly the reason why I posed the question. Has there ever been any coach with a losing record at D-II that has ever been promoted all the way to DI-A head coach? By comparison, there's a D-II coach with something like a 70-5 record, and he hasn't gotten that kind of promotion (gosh, I wish we had seriously considered him). And heck, Owens has been somewhat successful at Ashland, and I haven't heard anything about him possibly moving up to even the I-AA level. If most of the people on this board want him to win something before he gets any kind of consideration here, I'd say that's the understatement of the century. Of course he needs to win something! And maybe a lot more than "something". My point is, I think it's a big leap even for the top coaches in that division. But, a coach who still has a losing record after 6 seasons? I'd say they should be fortunate to still be wanted by their present school, let alone get a promotion 2 levels above their current division. From the data you've provided, it seems that he's just about on par with the school's all time winning percentage. And since I see that he was 6-5 last season, and 3-8 a few seasons ago, I wouldn't classify him as being some kind of architect of a steady and sustained rise of this football program. It looks a lot more like a roller coaster to me. Sometimes....people just belong right where they are. And I think this is true in this case also.
  23. Simple question for everyone pondering the possibility of someone else being hired instead of Coach I. Question: Name me any other D-1A program that is seeking the services of a D-II coach with a losing record?
  24. Akron isn't the Yankees. We're the Pirates. It was the football version of Pirates/Indians 2010. And, the Indians discount such games pretty heavily via different packages. K.e.n.t. packed the house for a 1-3 team vs. a 0-5 team. That has to show up on someone's radar. Note: $5 vs. $15 makes a big difference for a family of 4. $20 gets you off the couch. $60 keeps you on it. It absolutely makes a difference!! If it doesn't, then someone please explain to us why some of those old Acme-Zip games could draw 35,000 while the rest of the games in some of those seasons wouldn't even draw 10,000, even if we were winning? This isn't a raving endoresement of discounting tickets. But, it would definitely increase attendance. The question is, would we encounter too many negatives by resorting to such a program?
  25. First, let me say that I understand the argument on both sides of this issue. But...as a fan, I'm losing my enthusiasm to go to a 3/4 empty Info and cheer along with a few other people each play, and hearing our hollow sounds echo in the empty atmosphere. I want excitement. I guess an economist would say that supply and demand should determine your price. I have a hard time disagreeing with that. I want more atmosphere and we should do whatever it takes, unfortunately. This will especially come into play next year. I expect that tons of people will not renew season tickets. Especially after these heavily discounted packages are now being offered for reserved seating multi-game packages. We need to have some way to keep this ex-season ticket holders coming back, even if they don't renew.
