Great win for the Zips. They looked very balanced out there. Good 3 point shooting, lots of assists, good rebounding, and a lot of layups on the and dunks on the give and go. I think we went 10 deep tonight and everyone contributed. I like that we are not just relying on the 3 ball. Trimble is just a streak shooter. We have our second scorer. LCJ was very happy to dish the ball tonight. Really enjoyed the game and started to figure out the skill set of the payers on the team.

I really like how Central Michigan can slash to the basket. Very athletic team and some great moves. They just don't have any outside shooters. And just when I give Freeman credit for great hands he fumbles one. However, the player climber his back and it should have been a foul.
-
I love Freeman's hands on the pick and roll. Okay Akron fans, how many of our centers could not hold onto the ball on the pick and roll. Too many to name. Great to see the teamwork and dunks.

The Zips have their highest ceiling when Dailey is on the floor. He’s just got to start playing to his potential.
If he were playing near his potential I would not even ask the question. He was getting beat on defense, on the boards and did not contribute on offense. I do not believe he was on the floor the last 8 minutes when the team looked the best. Another game like that and I would not start him.
-
What do you think about starting Reese over Dailey? They played about the same minutes on Tuesday and Reese clearly outplayed Dailey. Reese has the best post moves on the team and gives us some inside scoring. He also is a stronger rebounder. My only hesitation would be that it would send Freeman to the wing instead of the center position. Not sure if those two have been on the floor together. I think Reese usually comes in for Freeman. Hopefully, Dailey can play better than he did on Tuesday where he had no points and 2 turnovers. His man also beat him on the boards.

It may well have been an exposure thing. Heck, I've never heard of the Lake Effect Conference or many of its members (Willoughby Andrews Osborne Academy, Elyria First Baptist Christian, Austinburg Grand River, Chagrin Falls Geauga, North Olmsted HEARTS for Jesus Christ, Cleveland Horizon Science, North Ridgeville Lake Ridge Academy, Sagamore Hills Lawrence and Cleveland St. Martin De Porres).
As a contrast, K-lac as a 7 footer wasn't All-Conference first or second team as I recall and he was recruited. He's now playing 10 minutes and scoring 2 points a game at Walsh.
When I read the ABJ article about Freeman I do not think it was about recruiting but it seemed like after high school Freeman wanted to be done with competitive basketball. I know many gifted high school athletes that have been playing their sport since kindergarten and are tired of the grind and just want to be done. He had an academic scholarship and it seems like he did not seek to play competitive basketball. It was only after arriving on campus did he decide that he wanted to "try out" for the team. K-lac did not receive a scholarship out of high school and went to a Florida sports academy to work on his game. Groce gave him a scholarship when he was first hired and gave his a chance to play division one. I never thought K-lac would be a contributor because he was slow and did not have basketball instincts for the game and just never learned from his mistakes. The guy got called for a moving screen a dozen times and constantly was in foul trouble. Todays game is about quickness and athleticism and you can see it in Groce's recruits and in Freeman. Look at the matchup between Swingle and Freeman last night. Freeman dominated even though he gave up 4 inches and 100 pounds.

Last year, Akronzips71 hoped Freeman could become a contributor. I thought he'd be company for Scott Walter. Looks like I was dead wrong and that AkronZips71's hope is coming true. 20 points and 18 boards so far.
Cam Reece needs to come around. I sure hope the big man on the way in can play as they need the help down low.

That is good enough for me. If I am Groce I would hire you as a scout because you have an eye for hidden talent. It is difficult enough to predict which high school superstar will excel in college but predicting a walk on to contribute is exceptional.

Last month one of our members actually brought it up. I will see what I can find.
Thanks! I remember his playing last year and he did not get any meaningful minutes and when he did play he did not stand out. I do not see how anybody would predict this guy would get any playing time this year no less a starter. That is what makes his story so amazing. (and he can shoot foul shots)

Just remember that AkronZips'71 called this one last year.
Please do not take offense but I do not remember you or anyone indicating that Freeman was going to be this good. Can you show me the post?

10 points 14 boards. And a block. The only double double of the game.
Somewhere there is a coach in NE Ohio wondering how this one got past him...
Nobody could see how good Freeman would be. I watched him last year and the only thing that stood out was that he had skinny legs. I fully expected him to be a player that only got into the game during blowouts. He decided to take basketball seriously and has amazing talent as a rebounder and shot blocker. One of my favorite Zips this year.

Those two 3s by Wynn were big in the first half when others couldn't find their touch. A couple contributions like that per game would be HUGE!
A bank shot from the corner, you do not see that every day.

I was surprised to see Tribble in the game at the end but he is very athletic and played great defense. I also want to compliment Ali. He had a great game. He played great defense and made a nice three and just always seems to be in the right position. He even got to play a little guard tonight bringing the ball up at the end of the game. He has really improved from last year. I know the game was sloppy but I thought we played great the last 8 minutes when we put the game away. I also thought Reese had his best game of the year. I would like to see him get more minutes because he has the best post up moves of any of the Zips. We need inside scoring. Lastly, I am glad we did not get Swingle. He did not score and Freeman just ate him up on the boards. (That's a lot of eating)

It is a very stagnant offense. We spread the floor and let LCJ beat his man and then dish the ball to the corner. I do not like how much we are standing around but it is working because LCJ is too quick. Also, Trimble is starting to remind me of Cheese, a strong 2nd scorer to compliment LCJ. I also agree, Freeman is great on the boards.

We have missed our share of layups tonight. Unusual to see Freeman not finish at the hoop. Dailey missed another open 3. BG made some nice finishes at the hoop.
-
We scored 16 points in the first 5 minutes and then 12 points in the last 15 minutes. I think we were stuck on 16 for at least 10 minutes. Maybe that would be something the announcers would talk about? I did like how Reese score from the inside in the first 5 minutes. Last year he was getting great feeds from LCJ and have not seen it that much this year. Wow, Freeman is very active under the boards. Their center, Swingle is just too slow. He looks about the size of Big Dog but has not been a factor this game because Freeman has just held his ground.

Come on Dailey...thought he would have some more confidence after last game.
Dailey is having a rough game. Air balled an open 3 and has been very hesitant when you are four feet from the basket leading to a turnover. If your that close, take it up strong!!

And if this season has not been confusing enough, I just read the following in the Gozips.com preview of Tuesday's game:
WHAT'S AHEAD
The University of Akron men's basketball team returns to James A. Rhodes Arena for a Mid-American Conference bout against the top-ranked Toledo Rockets on Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. on ESPN+. Akron is looking to increase it's home winning streak to 10 games, while snapping a streak of two consecutive losses and ending the Rockets' eight-game winning streak that dates back to Dec. 12, 2020.I know it is just a typo, but do you think that somebody could correct it before the game tomorrow or am I the only one who reads the preview?

What a great win!!!! They played great defense at the end and made some clutch 3 points shots. Trimble is a heck of a streak shooter. Amazing how many players came up with clutch shots. Good coaching move taking Freeman out. Before he missed those foul shots he looked tired. Was not surprised that he missed.

Zips look good. But I do not like to see LCJ dribbling and everyone else standing still. Need to have movement. Like the way we are attacking the rim. We are also boxing out. Very few offensive rebounds. Most of the defense is sound but a few times guys lost their man. Toledo can shoot the 3 ball.
I guess they decided to stop boxing out in the second half. They are getting beat on the boards like a drum. Terrible!!!!

The last couple of games I have seen little penetration and a lot of 3 point shooting. Unfortunately, a lot of bad 3 point shooting. We are shooting 31.9 % from 3. I check the stats and here are the number of 3 ball shots the players are taking:
Trimble: 51 of his 62 shots
Dailey 30 of 52
LCJ 59 of 106
Ali 22 of 42
Dawson 21 of 27
Does anyone remember Ali being a prolific 3 point shooter last year. We only got to the foul line 13 times in the last 2 games. We are an outside shooting team. If we are hitting the 3 ball we will win and if we struggle, we will lose. Lets hope the Zips find the 3 point range today or things could get ugly.
-
Really difficult to watch this team. First, I do not recognize half the players because we have so many new faces. When you cannot penetrate, shoot a three. If you miss, just shoot another 3. When LCJ is off this team is going to struggle. I thought the team played better in the last 5 minutes. Not sure why LCJ was not playing that way the whole game. He played very passive most of the game and nobody on this team stepped up.
On the last shot, give the Northern Illinois player credit. Ali played great defense and the guy made a tough shot. I think N. Illinois only had 8 players. Does anyone remember when we loss to N. Dakota when they only had 7 players? I thought that was our worst loss, until today.
-
Playing a Mac game on the road- tough
Playing against a zone- tough
Playing against a zone with all new players- tougher
Akron playing when LCJ take 45 foot shots and cannot penetrate- a blowout.
Lets hope we do not see a zone in the future.

Big Dog was 6-16 on FT's. I think he missed his last 6 or 8? It was criminal that we lost that game. Should have beat OSU by 15.
That is a game that we should have won. Ohio State was missing some players and I think we blew a big lead. I also think that if we would have won that game we would have hosted a big program because their gym was being renovated.
