i totally agree on the point about Biggsy...w/o him the '05 team never does what it does...there ARE players on this team who SHOULD be able to step up and lead...plenty of sr's here...maybe Ianello is not encouraging that, maybe the guys who have been here aren't comfortable stepping up...hard for me to believe there are not 1or 2 guys who are capable...AA seems to be a 'rah, rah' type active on the sideline..hope someone steps up because the majority of the team is not behind this staff yet.. Agreed. There are plenty of players who played on a team that won at least three games last year. We have how many returning starters? I don't see them winning another game this season, which is why I'm so confused by Captain Kangaroo's post about the lack of talent. There is talent and there is experience. They should be better.

You summary makes no sense. Mack left because he had a better job offer. CUSA is a better conference every day of the week. It has nothing to do with the players on the football team. I to am sick of the losing. Even more so, I'm sick of the "building" bullshit we have had to listen to for over two decades now. You guys are wasting your time and money going to these games....and it kills me to say that.
-
Buy outs typically involve one year salary and a termination of the contract. We are still paying JD $250K for not coaching.
-
Well, you guys are going to hate this, but here are the facts thus far. A poster posted this on the Miami board. The scientific method tells us you prove a theory true by disproving all other possibilities. I have a theory that the MAC is a I-AA conference and the players are I-AA players. I know what they are registered with the NCAA as, but I'm more worried about reality. Prove to me they are not I-AA.
-
I agree. We are not a I-A team in a I-A conference. We are a I-AA team in a I-AA conference. More on how bad the conference is in a while.
-
How about....no?
-
Adjustments my ass. We were playing a I-AA team. We should have been able to line up in our base defense and win the damn game. It has nothing to do with adjustments and more to do with the players on the field who are scared to death of winning.

This sounds like the type of jibberish I had to listen to when I was working in corporate America around those Six Sigma lunatics. It sounds good, but is in fact lifeless. Does the coach need a plan? Yes. They had one. In fact, their plan gave them a 31-17 lead. If it gave them a 31-17 lead, it could have given them a 45-17 victory if they PLAYERS execute the plan. I don't feel one damn bit sorry for the players. They are adults with full scholarshps so they need to be held accountable. The players blew another game...and I don't mean just this year. We can have a rotating head coach position from now to kingdom come and change our names to The University of Akron Browns, but unless they players decide they have had enough winning it isn't going to change. The players need to be called out.

Attendance was 10,086 of which half were present. Next home game we will get 3,000. These are the lowest of days to be a Zip. Sad. We were better when we had bad facilities and a crap stadium. As the facilities get better the team gets worse. Pathetic. New facilities, same losing attitude. Facilities don't win games, players win games. We don't have a winning attitude and never have. Some teams find ways to win, we find ways to lose.
-
Here is a question I have about the Zips since I don't get to see them play. Do they look nervous under Coach I? Nervous in a way that makes you think they are scared to make a mistake? One might call it being loose. The reason I ask this is Coach I coached under that fat slob Charlie Weis who brow-beats players into submission and poor performance. Maybe he is Charlie Weis Jr. There has to be some fun in playing football...not all fun and games, but some fun.

It really is and the schools of the mac need to decide what the Hell they are going to be. It sure as Hell isn't a D-1A conference. I went to the Wake vs. Duke game today. The game as exciting, but the quality of players is not even close to what other BCS schools put on the field. Both Duke and Wake would easily win the mac.
-
Bingo. Or more importantly...they don't know how to win because they don't win. If you start to win, you realize how hard it is to win. At that point, you get used to the hard work it takes and the feeling of success. The players should feel like crap. They made fools of themselves today.
-
33% completion percentage in game one.

I feel your pain. I've been telling everyone for a couple years now that the mac is a I-AA conference. This is a reminder to everyone from the Great GP1.....the MAC is a I-AA conference. I would like to apologize for one thing I said about it. I said we would be the best I-AA conference, I was wrong. My apologies.

After enjoying a game where the final score was 54-48 (in regulation), I had to find out from my wife that we lost to one of our fellow I-AA teams. Seriously, I didn't see this coming. There is no way to polish this pile of crap. I'm sorry some of you had to waste your time and money. Really, I'm sorry. I believe a lot of our blame is being placed on the wrong people (see last paragraph for blame....a little bit too much Labatt Blue at this point). I agree Coach I wasn't the best choice. I agree TW's best professional skill is keeping a seat warm in an office setting. TW is more expendable at this point. Pull the ejection cord on the guy already. Nothing good has happened since he sat in the big chair. It's been one year. Enough is enough. I'm not one to fire coaches as a knee-jerk reaction so I don't want to do that. I'd rather get an AD in here who can support a young coach who may need some guidance and assistance. Dr. Proenza created this disaster, he needs to fix it and fix it fast. I'm trying to grasp for something positive here as I look past IN and KY to the rest of this year and next. The start of this season reminds me of JD's first season. We got destroyed by PSU and our "stud" QB left a load in his pants in State College just like PN did last week at the Big Dialer. JD's first season we lost to MTSU who was I-AA the year before but not that year. I think the record was 1-4 after that point. Everyone wanted JD fired. A little back up running back named Brett Biggs took over the team after the MTSU game and the season turned around. He was the reason for the turn around. We won the mac the next season after JD was able to put people in the right places and we got a winning QB in place. Where and who is our next Brett Biggs? We need somebody to step in who is sick and tired of the losing. It's easy to lose. It's hard to win. We need to start winning. We had a kicker miss a field goal that any D-1 kicker should make. We had an extra point blocked. Unless the kicker kicked the ball up the ass of the center, this shouldn't happen. What I'm trying to say is, the PLAYERS need to fucking start playing already. Stop blaming the coach and put the blame squarely where it belongs...on the shoulders of the players. 31 points given up to a I-AA team is terrible. It was 31-17 at one point. The final score should have been 45-17. On the other side of the ball, we should be scoring 40 point minimum agains I-AA teams. The players need to get their losing heads out of their asses and perform. They all have full scholarships and they need to earn them. Where are you when we need you Brett Biggs? Is there a Brett Biggs on this team on either side of the ball? Seriously? Now let's go get a damn snack....

They went to a BCS game last year. They should be sold out this year. The stadium isn't that big. Their success has less to do with marketing and more to do with winning. How does having season tickets at one school disqualify one from having a marketing opinion? This board is an open forum....I'll give an opinion whenever I want. Actually, this board couldn't survive without my opinions. There would be nothing interesting going on. Bringing Waddel back is an interesting idea? The point is this. I know a lot of people on this board have a man-crush on Waddel and though he was some sort of marketing genius. I think he was a nice guy who kind of took a Duck like crap around the place before he left. Mike is basically a paper pusher like almost all athletics administrators. None of them are very creative. Bringing Mike back to do marketing would be like putting Lane in charge of creative at Sterling Draper Cooper Price.
-
You had me right up until this point. Waddel gave away tickets and got big crowds. I could do that. I want someone who can do what I can't. Let's see how Cincy does this year filling their stadium. The just completed a BCS season. Can we see a marketing genius sell tickets.

Or.... 1. Temple doesn't want the BE back. They ACC could be a good fit for Temple. The ACC goes as far north as Boston so Philadelphia is not out of the question. Maryland is very close. Temple can hold their ground in the mac for a few more years to see how things pan out. 2. You take what you can get. It goes back to one of my favorite college sayings. Go ugly early and avoid the rush. 3. The BE is not an attractive conference at this point. VA Tech, Miami and BC really hurt the BE and themselves by leaving the conference. All were better off in the BE. S. Florida had a good year or two, but that was a flush in the pan. The BE is a dead conference that is more like a zombie than a living conference....sort of a zombie conference.

A lot of changes are going to happen between now and 2014.
-
I see what you are saying. However, they need to make a lot more rule and structural changes than just this one. I don't think this levels the playing field with BCS schools in a meaningful way. It would help gather some transfers, but they would just be the guys who couldn't play at the bcs level so there would still be a difference in talent. It would generate some separation between I-AA and non-bcs schools, but not in a meaningful way. I would like to see more structural changes in the NCAA.

Will the Soccer Team Outscore the Football Team?
GP1 replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Did you go get a snack after typing this? -
Either we are D-IA or we are not. We can't be it some of the time. If we are D-IA, then players have to sit out. If not, then they can play right away.

Soccer vs Wake Forest game thread

Yes, it's sad but true, this place is the home of the late Senator Jesse Helms and the irreverent GP-1. Definitely attracts Tea Party sympathizers and assorted Nascar Grizzly Mamas and Papas. I take personal offense to this. I live in South Carolina........ not with those low end folks in North Carolina. -
Harrah's will be involved in the Cleveland casino. Thanks for the link! Since I don't live around, I had no idea they were seriously looking at. A word of warning though. Some of those riverboat dumps are owned by Harrah's as well. You can see from this link that all of their brands are not top of the line. If they do it right, it could be great. If they do it poorly, it could be just another failed white elephant in Cleveland. Here's to doing it right. Cherokee has been under construction for a long time. They built the hotel and lower gaming area first and then have expanded around that in a smart way. Cleveland should take their time as well and do it right. Expand it little by little and you are always offering people something new to visit. The entertainment room at Cherokee is the newest reason to go visit. Paula Dean is opening a restaurant soon so there will be another reason to go down the road. They really seem to be doing this right.

I've never said Frye sucks. He just isn't a winner. Facts are facts. And like I said before, you can't really blame a QB who's throwing for 300 yards a game and losing. We had some of the worst defenses in the history of college football. Facts are facts. And Frye still managed to win more games in his 4 years than any other 4 year span in our D1 history. The bottom line is, Nicely has more talent on this team than Frye ever thought about. If he's half as good as Cap claims he is, he should double Frye's victory total. I know if we'd had the defense in those days that the team does now, we'd have won a lot more games. 3 more in my senior year alone. But you didn't. Excuses....always excuses. Was there poor defenese? Yes. However, how many times after driving down the field fail to convert short fourth down plays? It happened time and again. Choke artists. Lots of teams move the ball well between the 20s...look at what Navy did today and they lost because they couldn't execute when it mattered. It isn't really a slap in the face of the player of that era so it is unfair for me to generalize for that era only. It has been going on for 20+ years now. Only once in the past 20+ years have we got the job done when it mattered and Frye wasn't on the field.
